Folding bikes, you get what you pay for.
Cheap ones usually don't fold well; poor folding system; cannot push after its folded; hard to change parts; to list a few more common problems.
Even expensive ones, need to check for theses things properly before buying.

Dahon has a cheaper $500+ one, but I'm not interested in foldables, so never try it out.

agree with you, will consider a used Dahon bike within my budget.

Yup, quite a lot of drivers are inexperience on the road but think they have been driving for a long time. Also, it is always the other party's fault mentality. I also fear for my life. One saloon car just drove past me last weekend with the side mirror almost hitting me.

Btw, for road bikers, when turning right at the junction. Do you filter to the right lane and turn with the cars or stay to left lane and cross with pedestrians?

you cannot ride on pavement, TP will fined you $20. you also cannot ride on pedestrian crossing, you need to push. hence, if you lazy to push or dont want to get fined, you have to filter to the right. yeah, we dont have cycling track in singapore, just becareful when u ride, always watch what behind you.

I never see any one got caught plus this morning, I saw two electric bicycle on pavement n travelling at high speed. What if they hit an old folk? Really out of control liao la. Furthermore $20, either they can afforded to be fine or TP don't bother to earn it.

I just got a Raleigh MV8 to replace my old commute.
Pretty good deal for the price, but I've been out of touch with bike and parts for some 4yrs now.

For $310
Alum frame (mini velo)
Shimano deraileur that looks like road groupo (eg. Sora)
Trigger shifter (used to be cheaper twist shifters in this price)
8sp Cassette (not freehub which was common for this price)
Quick release wheels
130bcd crank (used to be cheaper fixed type for this sort of price)


Bike is agile and picks up speed well.
Reminds me of a MTB with fixed fork on slicks, but more 'niffy'

Also what is the difference between road and cross bikes?

Is cleats a good idea? I have been told that they can break legs if not careful. I have been told to get FiveTen's Diddie Schneider instead. Anyone tried this shoe or any other recommendations.

Riding on the road is pretty safe. I can say 99% of the drivers are fine! it is only that 1% who will screw up your day. But at the end of the day, knowing how to ride defensively and able to have situational awareness will keep you alive on the roads of Singapore.

Regarding ManWearPants's questions, going clip-less improves pedaling efficiency when riding (better power transfer) Riding clip-less is more popular among road cyclists due to the need for speed and efficiency. They are also designed to disconnect in a crash!

My speed's average about 30-40km/h, look back, signal right then slowly filter. If there's too many cars, i'd hit the pavement slow and use the pedestrian crossing to continue along with road traffic heading right.

Even allow, they cycle on pavement with pcn next to it, they don't bother to switch. Pcn is a waste of $ to build anyway.

fully agree that PCN has been waste of money. Should have done a proper cycling lane. Now neither here nor there.

Btw, anyone has tried shaft driven bicycle? Where in Sg can find Dynamics or Sonoma branded bicycles?

Yesterday I got a flat tire while riding with my 3 year old son at the intersection of Serangoon road and Kallang PCN (near Serangoon x PIE). It's in the middle of nowhere with no sight of any bike shop.
I tried to wave so many taxis but all refused as soon as they see my bike.
But luckily there was this nice driver stop by. To my surprise, he asked me to put the bike in the back row as the trunk cannot fit the bike with child seat on.
We struggled to fit it in with one wheel removed and some padding on the seat. Mr Teo Sheng Huat (SHB 2286Z) was a rescuer for my son and I. I paid him double the fare to show my appreciation and not sure if it's enough.

How do you guys prevent such thing from happening? Not sure if I'll be that lucky next time

It happened once to me in Lim Chu Kang. I managed to flag down a lorry driven by 2 banglah workers. I hauled my bike into the back and squeeze into the front with them. Before they drop me off at the bicycle shop, I paid them $10 as I really appreciate their help.

There are 2 options:

1) If your bike is not too dear, lock it against a railing. Come back to retrieve it later,

2) Bring a spare tube, all-in-one bicycle tool, and a portable air pump and keep them in a pouch under your seat.

Thanks guys. My bike is only $200 + the child seat. Maybe I'll just bring the chain next time.
