Criticisms and comments nowadays...

Well said.

In other word, DP, you can be direct without being rude. Directness and politeness are not mutually exclusive.

Are you able to understand this?

rudeness is also subjective leh.

You could say:

"This photo doesn't work for me as I feel that there are just too many areas to improve. Others may not agree with me but I feel strongly that you would be doing yourself a big favour if you re-shot the photo and deleted the original."

as opposed to:

"This photo sucks royally and stinks to high heaven. Even the devils in hell wouldn't spit on it so you should just delete it, empty your Recycle Bin and format your memory card."

just to set the record straight, I doubt I ever used anything as whimpy or as colorful as quoted (highlighted) in deadpixel's post.

You see, I really do not care if other agrees with my comment. If I don't feel strongly about something, I won't comment on it.

Then the second quote, that is ... imaginative.

I share your sentiments on the syndrome on the "Emperor's New Clothes".

even garbage has it's own value. no matter how smelly or useless it may seem to others, there's always a place that places a value for it.

I cannot appreciate some out of focus or motion blurred pics done by some masters and yet, because of his name, many will sing praises to it. On first look to me, it seems like thrash.

I'm quite sure you are deliberately missing the point. Nobody's talking about whether or not others agree with your comments. In fact, you have quite a few grudging fans (no, I'm not one of them) who agree with the good critiques you give. It's just how you put your points across that (excuse the expression) sucks. Is it that hard to understand this concept?

I respectfully submit that you do indeed care what others think about the comments you make. That's why you make them, and in fact, I believe that's why you deliberately make them inflammatory, in order to generate controversy and discussion. Now, while I agree that it's good to generate controversy and discussion, as that usually leads to greater understanding and enlightenment all around, I don't think the way to do it is by posting rude and inflammatory comments.

when we say that photo is a piece of sh*t, we must give reasons and explain.

when we say a photo is good, we no need to give explanations.

actually..
it'd be good if you do
if someone is doing something right, let them know what it is

interesting thread for a rainy friday. :)
anybody cares to post a pic of a pile of dung, just so that we can all agree on at least one sh*tty picture. hah. :) tgif tgif.

Wah, Have to go and search. Hope that by that time this thread has not been locked.

not a pile but a piece, i hope it is good enough

There are two ways of handling a discussion:
  1. The first where everyone can discuss their views in a civil way and appreciate each other's views. This thread is a very good example.
  2. The second where one dishes out harsh comments. Some people can take such comments while others can't. You can't control another person's tolerance level, much as you can't control a person's tolerance for chilli or durian. Invariably the discussion degenerates to name calling and any useful comment is lost in the noise.
It is obvious which method is better.

But ...

the person who cares more about the community will choose the former.

the person who cares more about freely airing his own views in his own manner i.e. himself will choose the latter.

How did it smell when you took this pic?

BTW this is one hell of a sh*t pic! If u delete this pic and empty your trash no devils in hell will accept it!

and i must say it is a beautiful fly ... maybe cos it eats sh*t?

--> fly pict

O.o

waaahahahahahahahahaha

Creepy&

To a fly it's Satay.

The same we could say about a critique.

To some it's bad meat while to others it's Bah Kwa.

Fortunately and unfortunately (depending on how you look at it), clubsnap is a forum open to people of different experience, age, country. These factors all affect what is considered "beautiful" and what is "crap" for any particular person.

It's too easy to judge and sometimes more than difficult to be on the receiving end of the judgment. In fact I can easily find 10 new photographers who seldom post in CS as they rather not be harshly critiqued.

Don't belittle a simple comment like "Nice!", "I like it!". Although, they might not in actual fact offer any critique, they more than make up for it by encouraging the poster to take more shots and in the process improve themselves.

I just hope that people who comment in the future can bring out the comments in such a way, where more graceful choice of words are used. Criticise the picture, not the photographer.

Yea and TGIF! :)

Everybody sees things differently...

To the critique giver, it may be a snapshot.
To the photographer, it's a masterpiece.
To the person looking for soft porn, the more the merrier.

This picture is interesting.

They both tell the photographer that his photo doesn't work for you but whilst the first has some encouragement in it for the photographer to do better, the second outrightly condemns and humiliates.

This isn't about sugar coating your words, this is about etiquette; meanings can be conveyed in many ways and we can choose to be direct yet polite or direct but rude. When photographers ask for C&C, they are asking for Comments and Critique that will help them improve, not Condemnation and Censure that will discourage; and whilst many of your curt remarks are followed by useful pointers, I believe that no one in CS is going to fault you if you continued with your pointers but changed your brusque delivery of it.

To set the record Straighter, you did it many times to others but it does not apply when you commented on Jeanie's Photo.

Below is the example. You actually know how to sugar coat your comments. If you treat others the way you have treated Jeanie, you will hve less problem with the rest of the people here.

Imaginative use of back lighting ...

The lighting of the subject is too flat for my liking ...

The green flare is way too distracting and need to be corrected...

minor adjustment on the styling ...

some adjustment to how the back light is positioned ....

you got a winner here

At first I tot you are going to send this pic to the thrash bin, but to my surprise.......
It's A Winner.

By the way this picture is far worst than those pictures that you have poured acid on.

Are you implying that DP chooses his victims carefully?

You hacked into my mind? So you know for certain I was sugar coating my comments. GOOD FOR YOU. But you were wrong.

First of all, DO NOT EVEN TRY TO QUOTE ME OUT OF CONTEXT BECAUSE IT DRIVES ME MAD. A mad deadpoet is a bad thing.

Anyway, why don't you read what you quoted before acusing me of sugar coating my comments.

And please do not assume anything. What and which picture I like, is my business. You have no idea what I like or dislike.
