I think he's got a point....Mac users are quite individualistic, and mostly from the creative sector, that's the industry the Mac was targetted at since day 1. The Mac were marketed as "For the Rest of Us" and then were told to "Think Different", remember?

If you can still remember the 1984 ad, the Mac was portrayed as the one individual that sledgehammered the screen which Big Brother was speaking from, to a homogenous looking crowd wearing drab prisoner clothing. ;p

Unfortunately, Microsoft has already a stranglehold on PCs and have 'brainwashed' most computer users, thinking that other systems can't do this and can't do that. This belief, will be hard to break.

i dun deny that...i'm one of those rebels. just that the way he put it reminded me of 1984 :bsmilie:

I'm no techie, but if you ask someone who is IT savvy, I'm quite sure that admin controlling thingy is possible on the Mac, and possibly even more secure, as the OS is being built on the Unix platform, which many defence agencies' system are being built on as well.

Since the Windows platform has been so deeply entrenched in corporate world, I think many will be reluctant to switch, as this may need both software and hardware overhaul, which can prove costly.

Back to Creative, yeah, they definitely made a big mistake in being a follower into the MP3 market.

Haha, how to be leader of the industry when you are always trying to copy other's "Best Practice" and not come up with something completely new of your own? This applies not only to Creative, but throughout the companies here in Singapore.

ya back to creative. it seems that everytime someone talk about creative, apple sure to be dragged in. i think its time to stop blaming creative's poor performance on apple. bottom line is creative management that made poor decisions. its also so easy to blame locals for not supporting creative. get real.....come up with GOOD products and people will buy. just because someone buys an ipod doesnt they do not support local manufacturers. they may buy other local products.

like i ask earlier...to those who grumble about locals not supporting local products...what brand of TV do you have? what kind of PC did you buy when creative was selling their blaster PC? if you bought every local product then i take my hat off to you. otherwise you are no better than ipod buyers. :sticktong

Remember who was bashing Microsoft against Apple's woes earlier years? :bsmilie:

...

Just because I refuse to buy it doesn't mean I haven't used it before. Null point.

And er, I don't know anyone who has an iPhone, most of the online reviews I've seen mentioning it spit on it though. But well, stating that "So I hear" doesn't seem to drill its way into anybody's head who happens to be an Apple fanboy.

Just like if you say Nikon... blah blah blah blah blah and the weather sucks. I bet Nikon fanboys will just see NIKON SUCKS and go into beserker mode. Can't stop you all! =)

yep...you don't blame creative's problems on apple...you blame creative for not keeping up or being innovative enough, or, for not being creative enough.

creative is just not seen as a good product in the states...end of story.

thats right!

I notice that this is one thread that contains many LONG essays  that's seldom happen here .... good writeup, links, researched arguments.
As for PC vs Mac, maybe one should reflect on the achievements of Apple. For Mac, there is almost only 1 company vs the hundreds of companies (giants included, HP, DELL, etc..) for PC.
So whatever the statistic, Apple is still a great co.
As for Creative, let be fair, the company has actually done a very good job, exxcept that it has made a few wrong moves, esp in the marketing and design depts. My view is that Creative should derive its income from: 57% to 35% from media players, 15% to 20% from audio products, 18% to 30% from speakers and 15% from others.

Do indulge me again, why do you simply refuse to use the Mac or the iPod? Nothing wrong with your statement la, I'm just curious.:)

And yeah, you're right about the iPhone....the problem with it is that it tied itself to a carrier, and that the carrier doesn't have a good reputation. To us who is used to the 3G technology, it is indeed nothing to shout about.

But then again, you can't deny that it was another marketing success that Apple pulled, with more than 700,000 sold in the first week. The problem was with the carrier AT&T, which some complained it took many days before their lines get activated. But who can blame them when the sales of the handsets is so overwhelming?

You're right too, about the fanboy mentality, that again demonstrates its marketing success. When you have a fanbase who continually buy your products regardless of its quality, then you are assured of your company's survival and subsistence. All you need is to concentrate in growing that fanbase.

Wait a minute...I think it is not call marketing in Apple, it was coined Business Evangelism by its former marketing director Guy Kawasaki.:)

I think the only reason why most apple folk detest creative is because of SWH's claim of trying to run apple out of the mp3 player business, and eventually losing the battle. A part of the creative's problem is that while they thought the business was all about the players, it actually is all about the content and distribution. You can see this in their really crazy product mix --- simply too many versions of the same mp3 players. So while they were busy trying to tune their product to the market, apple simply had a few versions, and concentrated on trying to get their content distribution model up. In a way, this is classic singaporean mentality, no one wants to fix something that doesn't seem broken, or put another idea out that is out of the norm. In a way, creative is always trying to get past their roots, searching for new ideas -- remember their cdrom players -- and they should. That market is already drying up. Audio chipsets now exist on motherboards and games do not require special hardware anymore to play their games, remember doom III and john carmack getting bullied by creative to include eax? But at the same time, let's appreciate that creative hasn't pulled apart emu, and instead have continued with those mid-high end audio products, though that market is also getting a little saturated.

Nah, I never take anything said here personally, don't worry.

1) Mac - Too used to Windows concept, from day 1 from Windows 3.1 to Windows 95 to ME to XP to Vista, just stuck with it. Fact that very ley chey to run programs which are PC-based also very turn-off, especially when I have so many programs which are for PC. Now if only they could just combine forces, the Macbook's screen is really beautiful.

2) iPod - tried it before from friends, mini, nano, original, gen 1 gen 2 gen 3, seems too populist to me more than anything else, I can't really see any reasoning to pay the premium price for something which isn't that much superior to anything else in the market, Chinabrand MP3 players with lousy quality excluded. Same reason I don't use Nike, adidas, for running shoes, and Canon, Nikon for cameras. I think for companies, while advertising is fine and dandy in this world, and they might be good and all that, it's not ethical to pass on your promotion costs onto consumers.

I have both Zen and iPod. I find that iPod is much easier to use. But I must admit I can't differentiate the sound quality. Both seem good enough for me, a non-audiophile.

The lowpoint in Creative is when you have limited U2 edition iPods, while creative has SWH's signatured limited edition Zen player..... I mean, what gives and who cares....

Also, there was a local contest where you win SWH's car.... in other words, a second hand car.... even Best Denki gives out brand new cars....:bsmilie:

Yeah, I think there is something seriously wrong with Creative's mgt team. The man should fire 'em all and start rethinking.

It is time for Sim to relinquish his posts as CEO and Chairman of Creative. He had done a tremendously wonderful job for Creative and for putting Singapore on the global IT map during the pre-Internet era; but I am afraid that fresh ideas and new thinking are desparately needed now by Creative for its survival. The time has come for Creative to look for people like Louis Gerstner (who turned IBM around when it was about to collapse in the early 90s) to be their CEO.

if you ask me, swh has brought creative as far as he can. its time for him to step aside and let younger and more creative minds run the show, instead of staying put and stifling their creativity.

parallels desktop should allow most of the pc apps and some games to run on mac os x.

In years to come when the man has passed on, who will the younger generation of Singaporeans hold dearer to their hearts - the man who brought Singapore to the forefront of IT technology or some Western Bands. Hold on to your SWH signed copies of iPods, keep it shrink-packed, and it will give you many times the investment.

Did you just say SWH signed copies of iPod? Boy, I'll be damned if I throw that away!!!:bsmilie:

See, iPod has just become synonymous with an MP3 player, and the task of any company, let alone Creative, to overthrow Apple in this market, is gonna be bigger than mammoth.

they should give out their MP3 players FREE to gain more market share. ;p
