could it be CCD problem?

Hi Drewdam, I tried 2 shots(iso100) at 3sec n 4sec(NR on) with lens cover on. Mine didnt show any hot spots, both totally black. Not sure if its helpful to u?

hmmm...

received this reply from jp service ctr....NR effective from 2s instead of earlier reply to me aof 4s..

Dear Mr. XXX,

First of all, we have to correct our previous information on the Noise Reduction. On checking further with our technical department, it was confirmed that the NR works from 2 seconds rather than 4 seconds.
This feature is the same as E-1 camera. Our specialist indicates as follows:

The Noise Reduction works automatically when the shutter speed becomes slower than 2 seconds. This is the function to reduce the electric noise that appears when the shutter speed becomes slower than 2 seconds. Two seconds is the speed at which NR is effective. It is impossible to change the shutter speed. Under the condition where there is no light, however, the electric noise varies due to the heat generated by the CCD's specific character .

Just in case you get the wrong idea...

NR DOES NOT activate automatically as stated by Oly JP.

You need to turn it on in the menu.

I got the message as..

E500 has the same NR workable from 2s onward like the E1 from JP oly reply. and all these are refer to NR actviate thru menu. but in actual..it only kick in at >4s..

why i bring this up is because they infromed me that NR only work at >4s but now the same service ctr email n tell me NR will work from >2s. if u read the link provided by DiCam, that readout also mention NR will work from >4s..so which is which now? or m i confuse them?

Olympians, I believe there are many from all over the world.

Can you guys send the same question by email to your rep office in your city and see what is their answer to this? Then we can compare who is BS-ing or telling the truth...

A project for Olympians...

am not try to blow the issue out...i just send a few pic that taken at 3.2s at with n w/o NR send pass to service ctr today and am request them to test it on others E500 with the same setting to compare with mine..see if this is only happen to my set or to all the E500..since oly JP claim NR will kick in at 2s and longer...

i think i must be a damn fussy customer ..:embrass:

 still no call from oly service ctr till today...think they forgotten me lio..:(

Just happen to see this thread....I think have the same problem...when I took night shots with shutter more than 4s....wahh....so many hot spots...at first i thot its those stars from the sky but realised is not coz when compare with other picture taken from the same spot.....the hot spots are there....

told by Olympus Staff to set to 'On' for NR and Pixel Mapping...have not tried that though...
Sigh.....I asked my Canon friend, he said a good camera with a good sensor shd not have this problem.... :dunno:

I'm using the E500 and sad to say this is typical from CCD sensors. Your Canon friend is probably using a camera with a CMOS sensor, which displays less noise/hot pixel characteristics.

Thanks for the respond. yes, he's using Canon 1DS...
So, anyway to tackle this issue when taking nite shots? :dunno:

no lah, I bet you his camera also has hot pixel at long exposure. I used dunno like how many brands of DSLR and all of them has hot pixels. Ok olympus may be worse, due to small sensor but just turn on the noise reduction and it should go away.

Your Canon friend is probably using a camera with a CMOS sensor, which displays less noise/hot pixel characteristics.

The reason is CMOS based cameras HAVE to have automatic aggressive noise reduction even at 100ISO because CMOS sensors are in fact inherently noisier than their CCD counterparts...and it's not because their camera has a "good sensor". This noise reduction is separate from the manual noise reduction the Canon user can turn on and off.

Anyway "SleepingIdol", you've already been told how to correct the issue but you haven't done it! Check out these articles if you don't believe what's being said here:

And if you're curious, here's a shot I took where I used hot pixels as a BENEFIT to the image (as stars), taken with the C-700 (one of these days I have to try and duplicate it with my E-300):

u will not see any hot pixel if set at >4s with NR on..but at 1.6 - 3.2s, u will still see hot pixel even u on the NR...it just the NR kick in after set at >4s....that for E500..oop my E500.

Thanks to those who have responded. Feel relieved now...

Cheers!
