On a side note...

Charity events these days are marketed like lucky draw or lottery. Just look at all the advertisements for the events that tell you to call up and win prizes... really appalled that they only mention the cost of the call in small prints, and it's also very hard to know which org u're calling up or donating to just looking at the ads... their emphasis is always on prizes like condos, cars, laptops...

maybe all these charity org should be regulated and put under singapore pools, who can make themselves transparent by announcing how much of earnings from bets goes into charities, prizes, overheads... adds a morally right side to gambling though... haha

however right now if we pull out our donations, ultimately the beneficiaries suffer, although by how much will depend on the proportion of overheads... then maybe they start thinking up more lottery-like events to get more funds bcos it's dropping, and we feel they abusing their funds more... do i sense a vicious circle here?

so point here is... profit seeking model is not suitable for charity orgs. the ethic and moral standpoint is just too controversial, cos all donors are the stakeholders

Luckily you did not donate through your debit/credit card. One of my friend did donate using this way. Guest what! After his card has expired, it stops of course. When his new card arrived, it starts all over again?! How the hell they know his new debit/credit card number?  :nono:

If I were your friend, I'd insist on an immediate termination of this deduction.

My first question would be why? For administrations?
My second question would be, why do we need so many different organisation with different administrations then? Create jobs?

I believe that a charity in Singapore must use 70% of funds raised for the needy. Not sure if it's a guideline.

IMHO.. if ever anyone read..

We are looking at a Charity and not Commerical Organisation. Money are donated and not earned.

If we think the the CEO has done a good job running NKF like a commercial entity, and deserve the big paycheck/bonus, 1st class flight, gold toilet bowl, then..

Stop encouraging people to scarifies their time and effort to do voluntary work.. they should be PAID!

Stop asking the patients and family to show face on TV and share their sad stories, they are the CUSTOMERS of the organisation. They need the PRIVACY too, not only the CEO.

Stop asking for blood donation, Blood cost money to make too! PAY for it!

Stop asking me to be kind hearted.. its the CEO's job to generate income for the needy, not ME!

Isn't this how business world work?

Right on !! Even if he did such a wonderful work in NKF , and he deserve a bonus fine !! but 12 months ??!! I think the next pillar of economy will be the so called 'charity organisation' where every donkeys and monkeys will be flooding their staff recruitment office. Oh did i mentioned the word c-h-a-r-i-t-y ... nvm guess the word in today context had revolve into a biz modal ....

Of course he needs his 12 months bonus, how else is he going to pay for the first class seat while traveling on official business?

Based on what was said in The New Paper and Today... it seems that contractually, he is entitled to fly SIA business class (or its equivalents in terms of fare). As such, you can argue that if he flew by MAS 1st class but cost less than SIA business class, he is in fact saving for the organisation.

However, if the contracts states that he can only fly by business class, then which airlines he chooses will be subject to scrutiny again.

All these are problems to be resolved by the BOD of NKF. They shd have thought of it before they Oked his contract.

i beg to differ, if he truely wants to save for the organisation, should not he consider flying business class with the airlines that offer the lower price range?

by quoting the cost of flying business class on an expensive airline, is not one trying to spend as much as possible?

Not many CEO gets 12 mths bonus but if you notice carefully, their overall package is usually more than double their basic salary. This is due to things like share options, bonuses etc. In this case, no share option etc available.

Gimme example, the CEO who have those options this few years. The CEO whose bonus exceeds the basic of the WHOLE YEAR.

If I am your friend, I will ask the bank to return all my proceedings as there was never an agreement with the new card number.

Davinder Singh: Can we have a straight answer to this question and listen very carefully to it: Using NKF's funds, have you travelled first class? A straight answer, you are on oath.

T. T. Durai: Yes, NKF has not paid for...

Davinder Singh: No, no. My question is very simple. Using NKF's fund have you ever travelled first class?

T. T. Durai: No.

Davinder Singh: Is that the honest truth?

T. T. Durai: I have travelled on NKF's business-class entitlement. I have used it to travel first class.

Davinder Singh: I ask you one more time. Forget entitlement. Money. NKF money used. You travel first class?

T. T. Durai: Yes.

Davinder Singh: You have?

T. T. Durai: Yes, on business-class entitlement.

To further questions, Mr Durai said he knew that an SIA business-class fare was higher than first-class fare on other airlines.

Davinder Singh: So effectively, what you have done is you have used money from the NKF ostensibly for business-class travel but really for first-class travel.

T. T. Durai: I have used...

Justice Tan Lee Meng: Yes or no?

T. T. Durai: Yes. Can I explain why?

Judge: You can but I would appreciate if you answer the questions.

Davinder Singh: You see, Mr Durai, this is public money. Isn't it your duty as a trustee of people's money to make sure that you get best value on a business-class seat instead of deploying this clever tactic of using one of the highest published rates to get first class on another plane?

T. T. Durai: This is a decision made by the board. I used the entitlement.

Judge: The question is not who made the decision.

T. T. Durai: The board gave me...

Judge: Please answer the question.

Davinder Singh: Isn't it true that as a trustee of people's money, you have a duty to ensure that you get value for that money?

T. T. Durai: True.

Davinder Singh: Isn't it true that you need to fly in business class for business-class comfort?

T. T. Durai: This is an entitlement given by the board to me...

Judge: That was not his question. His question was, the directors feel that you deserve business-class comfort.

T. T. Durai: Yes.

Davinder Singh: And because you deserve business-class comfort, you are given a perk of business-class travel.

T. T. Durai: Yes.

Davinder Singh: Using the money donated by the man in the two-room HDB flat.

T. T. Durai: Yes.

Davinder Singh: Who has never in his life seen a business-class cabin?

T. T. Durai: I would not know that.

Davinder Singh: So you set your perk at SIA business-class rate, use that money to go first class and sue people who say that they have seen you in first class?

T. T. Durai: At that point (of the 1998 lawsuits) I didn't travel on first class. But in the past two years, the board has given me entitlement to travel business class on an SIA ticket. So I have taken the liberty to travel first class... That is what the board has decided. They know about this.

but have you guys ever thought about it rationally, pay peanuts you get monkeys.

NKF has been very successful recently. The BEST tactic I think was having "free" health screening and then asking you to sign up for a monthly donation. This I think amounts to quite a lot of money. It actually made the whole charity pie bigger as many people like me who would not have donated, now donates every month.

The CEO of NKF should be paid well but how well? Same for the minister's pay. very sensitive one....

Ministers are running the country. Cannot compare apples to oranges.

I never support those so-called charity shows but my wife does ... and she's really pissed off when she saw the papers this morning.

eh... i think u shouldn't put words in his mouth...

anyway i also believe that, when you pay peanuts you get monkeys.. in the business world.. cos everyone is out for the money.. this model however does not work on the those highly motivated for the good of others like charitable organisations and spiritual followers. but i've seen that nowadays money really makes wonders that even those who should not have such greed have fallen...

That's my pt la, for minister running the country , are they getting a 12 month bonus ? If not , how to justified MR DURAI 12 month bonus for running a 'charitable organisation' ?? haiz ....

The transcript on the HW zone thread makes for a really good read. I almost cried when I got to the part about how a man on the street would view the purchase of a $900 tap. I hope this case exposes the NKF once and for all.
