by the way guys, sorry to ask your these.

1. cus canon got this promotion, a purchase with purchase EF 55-250mm IS lens for only $299 for 550D. is there other brand lens with the same spec (EF 55-250mm IS) that cost less than $299? thanks.

2. then would your guys get a 75-300mm III USM lens instead of EF 55-250mm IS lens? thanks.

i apologise if the above questions sound noob. sorry.

I heard the 75-300mm is a pretty lousy lens.

There are a lot of portrait lens goes from 35mm to 200mm. Dun miss them out!
*edit* oops, u did list it after all. Hard to see it clear on multiple lines on my iPad

1) 2nd hand 55-250 will cost ~$250-$300
2) I would suggest 55-250 over 75-300. Also, in general, when using a tele lens of such focal length 200mm>, IS will come in handy if handheld. (but to some "IS" is redundant)

I think I heard that too..

Actually, the lenses can be used for many more purposes...Essentially, any lens can be used for virtually any purpose, it's a matter of how you use it

Focal Lengths (35mm equivalent)* Lens Type Photography Type (non-exhaustive)
Less than 20mm Extreme Wide Angle Architecture, exaggerated portraits, environmental portraits, documentary, landscape
21mm - 35mm Wide Angle Landscape, Architecture, exaggerated portraits, environmental portraits, documentary
35mm-70mm Normal Street and Documentary, portraits, documentary
80mm-135mm Medium Telephoto Portraiture, detailed landscapes/architecture
135mm-300mm Telephoto Sports and Wildlife, detailed landscapes/architecture, portraits
Greater than 300mm Super Telephoto Wildlife

cus i was wondering if i purchase an EF 55-250mm IS lens, and later on purchase a 75-300mm III USM, then it's like a waste of money if they somehow have the same effect.

It's a waste of money to buy the latter lens. The former one received good review comments. Do read the reviews, the 75-300 is a lens one can easily skip in terms of image quality. The 55-250 comes with IS and the 50mm at the long end are not really a loss given the amount of megapixel the 55D and 600D have. Enough space to crop.

Aiyo TS, what is your budget? What is your style of photography? Do you zoom a lot?

Then go with the 550D + 18-200...more than enough for anything general...from wide - normal - tele, which can take from landscape > portrait > closeup etc.

+1

The 18-200mm is an all rounded lens. No need bother about getting other lens for a while at least :)

hmm.. thanks for the advice. well, i need to do some finance calculating, see whether if i getting kit I plus the purchase with purchase 55-250mm lens worth it or a body with just 18-200mm lens. lolx.

Canon used to package 18-200 with some of the body, not sure why I don't see it now...hmmm...btw, all Canon entry level level Kit 1 is the 18-55.

You may want to consider the option of buying Body and Lens (18-200) separately.. The other alternative is Buy the body with kit 1, and get a 2nd hand 55-250..I believe this option is cheaper. I did not do the maths yet, so not sure how the cost will be like.

But the 2 lens setup will be quite abit more troublesome when you need the longer focal length.

Hmm.... Saw that only the 60D has got kit iii which features the 18-200 lens. Maybe sales for this kit is poor thus they don't have it anymore? Try calling Canon up to see if they offer it for 550D?

hmm.. i also find it by buying a kit I and purchase with purchase a 55-250 lens a good idea. but then to do so, i have to purchase during IT show or at cathay photo. lolx.
by the way friend, can enlighten me on your this sentence... "But the 2 lens setup will be quite abit more troublesome when you need the longer focal length."? thanks.

alright, i would give a call but i don't think canon would have this offer, cus judging from the web page, they only have kit I and II available. (:
