WHITE BALANCE Question.

For Sunrise/Sunset and Night shots, I leave it at AWB. Any other settings 1000Ders tried?

cakka

I usually leave white balance to the default AWB mode. But this is what i understand from my experimentations and it may be wrong. But here it goes.

White balance is measured in K units. The bigger the K value, example 5000K-7000K, the white parts will appear reddish or WARM. The lower K value, example, 1000K or 2000K, the white parts will appear bluish or COOL. The main idea behind adjusting the WB is to make the white appear as white as possible.

Depending on your needs you can set it using the WB button in the 1000D. The 1000D categorizes white balance into Daylight (5200K), Shade (7000K), Cloudy(6000K), Tungsten Bulb(3200K), Fluorescent bulb(4000K), Flash and Custom modes.

If you still not happy, you can set your own WB Shift. To do this...

1. Press "Menu"
2. Goto to the 2nd tab (from left, the second camera icon)
3. Goto WB Shift/Bkt and adjust accordingly.

Go up the white becomes more greenish
Go down it goes magentaish
Go left it becomes more blue
Go right it becomes more red.

Dont forget to save... Enjoy adjusting until you get tired;p.

Remember, the main idea is to make white appears white. But of course you can also have your own creative adjustments.:)

For sunrise/sunset, I would rather make the WB warmer... Hopefully it'll make the glow more yellowish and reddish...:)
For Night shots I just leave it to AWB. At night its suppose to be dark anyway. An usually the AWB is sufficient enough to get the image WB appears natural. :)

I use FastStone Photo Resizer when I'm lazy else it's definitely Photoshop

Photo Resize freeware

http://www.diworkflow.com.sg/free-downloads/photo-gadget-picture-resize.html

I find this easy to use. Do share if you have others.

above only works on Windows, can anyone advise/recommend what I can use for Mac, tried playing with iphoto but cant find any resize option (only crop).

try the hassle-free freeware irfanview! haha not sure mac can onot.

cheers!

Hi guys...

After showing my unhappiness a little bit, the guys at Canon decided to get my 1000D repaired last Thursday. The 1000D is now in my hands;). I'm now getting used to exchange lenses using the the Canon Vest.

This is my advice to anyone here who is considering to buy the superzoom lens. Example of current superzoom lenses includes:

a. Canon EF-S 18-200mm
b. Sigma 18-200mm
c. Tamron 18-200mm, 18-250mm and the ultimate 18-270.

After reading so much and getting a lot of input from people, I realize that it is better to keep your focal lengths divided into a few lenses rather than only one.

The main reason is that there are compromises in huge zoom lenses. The compromises includes:

a. unwanted distortion (both barrel and pincushion)
b. uninvited chromatic aberrations
c. softness in specific focal lengths
d. auto-focus misses (related to the AI of the lens)
e. slow auto-focusing (inaccurate sometimes)
f. they are slow (their F-stop is pretty huge at the maximum zoom)

Even the trusted Canon had criticism for its EF-S 18-200mm. When this lens is coupled to a 50D, many reviewers have the opinion that it does not have enough resolution to give advantage to the 50D 15MP sensor.

I noticed that the pros only use L zoom lenses as their carry-around walkabout lens. The Canon EF 28-300 mm F/3.5-5.6 IS L lens is still regarded as the best of the walk around single-lens. But its performance can never match with L lenses having shorter focal ranges e.g EF 70-200mm F/2.8 IS L.

In fact, for the pros some of them prefer the prime lenses over the zoom lenses for the ultimate sharpness and picture quality. That means I think they are going to lug around many lenses during their holidays.

Like some Clubsnap Sifus says, we buy dslr so that we can change lenses. But if you want convenience rather than the highest quality images, then by all means go for the superzooms. Some even suggested to buy the PnS superzoom because of its lightweight and portability.

Cheers

Mahathir

Hi again guys...

Ok ok... I keep this short and sweet.

Shoot in RAW for ultimate flexibility in editing your images. The Canon DPP (digital photo professional) is powerful enough for beginners who wants to dabble in RAW format editing. For JPEG shooters resizing, cropping and other colour enhancing works can easily be done by the ZoomBrowser. You only need photoshop, gimp and other stuff if you feel that this two softwares limits your creativity.

Cheers

Hey guys,

I was just thinking for our coming third outing, wanna share money and rent out a 50D? ;p We can then take turns feeling and shooting using the 50D. Why 50D and not 5D Mk II? Well most of us have EF-S lenses and 5D Mk II accepts no EF-S lenses.

I'm no pro but I'm also intending to replace the kit lens with prime lens. i'm already using a 50f1.8, looking to get 35f2 next.

my ideal (affordable) lens combination is 10-22, 35f2, 50f1.8, 85f1.8 & 55-250.

10-22, 35f2 & 55-250 for travel
35f2 for general purpose, walkabout
50f1.8 & 85f1.8 for portraiture

I'm daydreaming... :bsmilie: too many ideas, too little money

I'm saving up for the Tammy 17-50mm.. Its half the price of the canon ef-s 17-55mm, and IQ comparable if you get a gd, sharp set.. Till i can afford the original canon lens that is as the 17-55 IQ is comparable to an 'L' lens.. Other than that, the 70-200 IS is another on my wishlist..
