Oh u guys rockz... thanks for the explanation!

wonglp... opps... my bad... looks like i need to read a little more on the 4/3 system. I've always thought the OM-D is mirrorless also. :P And I tend to think 4/3 and "micro" 4/3 are the same! But the chart is useful. Thanks....

Its mirrorless...

Hi all enthusiastic Olympus users!

1. I read that there are "Standard", "High Grade" and "Super High Grade" Zuiko lenses. For the Standard lenses, is the image quality less superior compared to the Higher Grade ones? At least that's what it is for DSLRs: Kit lenses, though reasonable in optical performance, are not as good as the more expensive ones.

2. I noticed the max aperture of the Standard lenses are quite small, eg the 14-42mm kit lens at f/5.6, 42mm. I'm more used to f/2.8 and f/4 zooms. Is there such a thing as bigger max aperture for zoom lenses? Which means I have to consider the High Grade Zuiko lenses?

3. What sort of lens brands can fit the OM-D besides the Zuiko ones? I see some people use Panasonic Lumix. So only Lumix and Zuiko ones can be considered?

4. Do I need to get an Olympus flash for the OM-D? Saw someone using Nikon flash. Can I use my Canon Speedlite flash for the OM-D?

Apologies if the questions sound noob. Doing my best to make the switch to 4/3 cam! Thanks a lot....

1. I think those are price categories, which do correspond pretty well to lens quality.

2. 43 zooms are typically faster than M43 zooms, but they're bulkier, more expensive, and need an adapter.

3. Olympus and Panasonic M43 leses are interchangeable, and several other companies make lenses in M43 mount. The superfast Voigtlaender Nokton 25mm f0.95 lens is a well-know (and very expensive) example.

4. Only Olympus flashes are fully auto on the E-M5 (same as the PENs).

5. I ordered the weathersealed Oly 12-50mm zoom with my E-M5, which I hope to get next week. It will make a good one-size-fits-all walkaround lens. But with my E-M5 in mind, I've already bought 3 superb primes: the Oly 12mm f2, the Panasonic-Leica 25mm f1.4, and the Oly 45mm f1.8. They all do a great job on my E-PL2, and they look even better in photos I've seen with an E-M5. Highly recommended, If you can afford them. I also have a gorgeous Contax G 90mm tele with a custom-made M43 mount, and a number of 35mm OM and other top-quality legacy lenses with adapters, up to 500mm (1000mm equiv). Many old 35mm lenses are first class, relatively cheap, and readily available on eBay.

Hope this helps.

Late-breaking extra: the OM-D is mirrorless like all M43 cameras. Its 35mm OM predecessors were SLRs. Yes, do read up on the M43 system. If you need a few links, ask and I'll post them this evening. Gotta go now ...

Thanks frelwa for the great explanation. Helps a lot. :) the Oly 12-50's range looks good but I'm not sure about the max f/6.3 aperture at the 50mm focal length. Kinda slow for me....

As7eroidS, thanks. Nice food! With the OM-D?

Guess I was confused for a moment by wonglp about the OM-D being a DSLR!

I found on the website the High Grade Zuiko 12-60mm f/2.8-4. But when I went to the shops, they don't know of this range and said there isn't such a lens. Strange... Can it be used to fit the OM-D? That's the closest I can find for a fast zoom lens in the range.

Btw, I find it amazing that the micro 4/3 system can rival even a larger sensor found in DSLRs.....

frelwa: Oh forgot to ask u.... do you mind sending me some links on m4/3? I'm currently reading some but thought no harm from knowing more.... Thanks so much...

Do you know how I can tell whether a lens was made for the older 4/3 system or micro 4/3?

Micro 4/3 lenses are "M.Zuiko" instead of just "Zuiko". You can find all the info on www.fourthirds.org. The SG, HG and SHG lenses are Zuiko, and are designed for 4/3 DSLRs. They will work on m4/3 cameras via an adaptor but the AF is much slower. Those f/2.0 SHG zooms are really expensive, too.

Panasonic only makes m4/3 lenses, named Lumix G. it also collaborated with Leica to make two Leica DG lenses.

Already got few 12-50mm popping up at BnS. One is asking for 500. I really wonder who will pay that amount for a kit lens and f6.3 at tele end :dunno:

The lens has some good spec also specially the weather sealing and focal range... just that it's a bit slow as you mentioned (not the AF) this lens would be good for walk about day street shooting. If you ask me I would get 14-54MK2 plus adaptor :-) but will make your camera huge.

Are there any lens that will give a 35mm equivalent?

Are there any lens that will give a 35mm equivalent?

not sure of your question, but just take note of the x multply by 2 to get the 35mm equivalent in dslr.

so to answer your question, should be a 17mm.

Olympus 17mm f2.8 pancake for AF and it's pretty cheap. Voigtlander 17.5 f0.95 for MF and it's very expensive and big. Though there will be ppl whom I know will buy the latter...

Epic primes for the m43s

12mm/2 , 20mm/1.7, 25mm/1.4 and 45mm/1.8

Note

20mm + 25mm with slight top ups can buy 25mm hehe.

For that price, you can get 3 of that screen protector from SLR Revo. But the gal sure was not happy to put it on for me though....
