can we claims tax refund for camera equipments??
let say we get someone not holding SIN passport to buy then bring it out of SIN
then bring back the item again...
4% for $2700(eg 10D) is a whopping $108!!!!
can we do that if we have some friends who is commuting in and out of SIN regularly??
btw anyone knows the price of 10D or D60 in HK??

just dun get caught lah...
also, when u get refund here, u may get tax when you get back to the country. den when u take it back here, you may get taxed again if you really suay.

normally u wont get tax when u bring camera back to your own country... ;p
juz like when u come back from overseas... when do u can tax for your stuffs?? i think hand carry stuffs is ok... eg watches, cameras, laptops, (items small but expensive)

to get tax refund you have to present the item to the officer at the airport inside the check-in. with the box i think. (not sure this part have to confirm) so when u bring it back with the box, there is a tendency to get taxed.

i think now is much easier to siam the tax

decade ago when i went to china, u need to fill in a form to state every single item that u bought in, and the custom will really check the list and see if it tally with what u are carrying

so what happened was that, the camera (just an used cheap P&S camera) was listed under my father name, but when we left china that time, the camera was in my mother bag instead cos my bro was sick and my father was carrying my bro.

anyway, the custom almost locked my whole family in a cell, and no matter how we explain to them for half a day also never listen

in the end just stuff the officer some $$ and the problem solved

instead pay more den getting back the tax refund?

actually i have a fren who is staying in HK who commute quite often to SIN, sometmes i go china and HK too...
din encounter some treatment so far.... so i guess they have lax the rules...

so does anyone know the camera pricing in HK? if price is reasonable, maybe i go HK and get one .. can enjoy tax refund in HK somemore... double savings :D

In theory, you have to pay 4% GST for items brought back into Singapore from overseas (if you are Singapore tax-resident). Except when the items purchased in total do not amount to more than S$400.

OF cos the law throws the onus of declaration on the tax-resident to declare. If you are caught, well....

There is a limit I think, like each people can bring in how much $$$ worth of goods un-taxed, I think if the total cost exceed then must pay tax for the excess.

Then again, taxation laws defer from country to country. It's only worth it if you are a malaysian in JB or else the air-ticket costs more than your 4% GST savings.

Imagine if no limit, and you buy a 1Ds with a 600mm IS USM lens, think of the savings. :D

:D  :o

if i remember slightly correctly

at one of the HK camera stops

canon EF 20-35 USM was priced at ard SGD $700 or less
420ex was priced at SGD $306

not sure abt the warranty

Most stuff in Hong Kong are cheaper than in Singapore, just that the warranty may not be valid here.

Take for example a PnS camera, the Contax T3. Last year around July, CP quoted me the price well in excess of $1K plus, can't recall if it was around $1.2K. Went to Hong Kong and got the camera for $800. Savings of $400!

Camera has international warranty. I called up the local distributor Tithes and they claimed that they will only send the camera to Japan in case repairs are required. Shipping chrgaes are questionable. If the camera was purchased in Singapore, no cost to the warranty holder. 8 months down the road and camera is still in excellent condition.

And trip was almost like as it was free!

As for GST, what GST? Are you actually going to declare the stuff that you buy? Even the people at the customs will know any Tom, Dick or Harry has loads of goodies worth individual items more than $400 in their luggage, especially when you have just flown in from shopping paradise like Hong Kong.

yeah... juz bought a lens in HK and its SGD80-100 cheaper.. but not all stuffs is cheaper here.. so u stil have to do your homework b4 u buy anthing :D
