There are lots of brands other than Hoya and Tokina out there... i.e. B+W, kenko, hasselblad, heliopan, KM, Nikon, Pentax, Rollei, Sunpak, Sinar, Tiffen, Tamron, Contax... Some of them are not available in Singapore but can be ordered thru M.O. or online shopping.

cheers for all the advice! Guess probably I have to wait for additional freebies!

IMO, I do not think there will be any additional freebies to be included. Perhaps you can wait till Christmas time to see if there are any promotion though I feel chances are slim. I'd still encourage you to pick one up and start snapping away.

Anyway a 512MB SD card aint too expensive nowadays. Either dat you can get your camera and start with the 256MB first and get the 512MB later when you need it. Among the must have are the rechargeable batteries, lens hood and adapters.

Cheers

Have been looking for a 58mm wide angle filter for my S2 IS. Too many brands and dunno which is best.

Some will give dark corners and barrel distortion right?

Hi S2 fellows,

Is the 3rd party Lens Adaptor out in Singapore? The original one is “BLACK” and SGD50. Any alternative?

It's very subjective. When you say better, what would you mean?
Value for money? Cheap? Durable?

B+W is one of the hot favourites in the market (maybe because it's expensive with good quality glass and good coating so must be good ;p ), and so is Hoya (cheap and looks okay).

When coming to UV lens, I personally do not like to invest much in it. To me it's only for physical and dust protection to my original lens. The UV rays absorption, you don't have to worry too much in Singapore as the UV radiation level is pretty low down here. You don't see ppl organizing charity programmes for skin cancer yet right? :bsmilie:

However, if you would to go to dry and desert areas (Western Australia and Darwin is harmful during summer), I would propose you consider getting a good coated UV filter and of course, UV blocking lotion to protect both yourself and the equipment.

One more thing, Hoya's filters are made by Tokina and Tokina ain't the really the most desirable brand in SG. Maybe it's because it's priced very low and most ppl always relate price with quality. (Very brand conscientous). I find that both Tokina and Hoya are pretty the same. If you were Tokina, you wouldn't make your filters more inferior than those you make for Hoya, right?

I have all applauses for Hoya and Tokina with except a minor complain for the UV filter. It produces a slight yellowish tint effect. Custom WB your shot will rectify the problem though.
So test out all the filters you like and buy the one that you really feel it's perfect without 'affecting' your shots at the right price.

I guess there should be some in the market.
My friend who uses the Oly C-730 managed to buy 3rd party adaptors. Canon has quite a big market share and I guess there should be companies who would be interested to cater to the pool of users.

I dunno what is the ring diameter of the S2 IS camera.
For me, I'm using 58mm filters for my DSLR. Cost of such filters are relatively cheap as compared to >70mm.

The 67mm B+W UV filter would cost about $67. Not sure about the other sizes.

The size of the filter if you have the Canon adapter is 58mm. Filters can only be used if you have the lens adapter on.

Ic.. Den which other UV filter does not cause too much yellow tint but price is still quite acceptable?

Wah, you want 'cheap yet fresh'.
I dunno which other 'cheap' brands have non yellowish tint. The only brands I use are Hoya, Tokina and B+W.

Btw, the 'yellowish tint' can be corrected using proper WB.
