haha the post was Canon or Nikon what do u expect?

anyway Just to share for TS.

I started wanting to get nikon as all my friends were using nikon cameras. I could share lens with my friends and could recieve guidance from them since we were using same brands.

however, an opportunity stroke and i was offered a very cheap deal for Canon 400D with kit lens. I thought why not use this opportunity to find out if I really like photography and find out the systems/brands/functions that i like. I realised that compared to my friends D80, 400D doesnt seem to have the "feel good" factor to me. however, I took more pictures and got very comfortable with the canon system and were able to capture the moments that i always wanted to.

My advise to TS is
1) with your budget, get a second hand system first to make sure that your investment dun go to waste in case u dun like photography or really dislike the brand.
2) Both systems has its strength and weakness. You need to get used to the system to be able to capture good moments.
3) Do your research...and i mean READ up.
4) once you want the system, Dont regret and just stick to it. Ultimately you'll invest in lens and its very costly to switch. Bodies will always improve so no point changing brands cos of bodies.

Since you have tried canon. did you like it?

I would totally agree with what many people has said previously.

Choosing a camera brand really does depend on an individual. Both Canon and Nikon are remarkable brands that produces remarkable IQ. The difference in IQ is so insignificant that most people usually aren't concerned what brand of cameras you used to capture those photos.

However, choose based on how the camera feels in your grip, as well as the system on which it operates on. Nikon and Canon have both completely different systems, and once you're stuck on a system, its usually difficult to switch to another. (ie. like from Nokia to SE where the text messaging system is totally different)

Since you've tried Canon out, see if you like it. Attempt to borrow a Nikon to try out as well.

Hope to see you posting up pictures of your capture soon! ;)

The fact that TS can ask such a general question like "Brand C vs Brand N" with no specific models, means TS have no idea about specifics, and thus, is not ready for a DSLR purchase. Don't buy one until you have done your homework and research each model that is offered. Look also at Sony, Pentax and Olympus. Sony A230 is only selling at 699 now. One of the cheapest on the market.

It's depends. I use a canon camera, but I've also tried nikon. I feel that Nikon Colour is better.

But both are good. It's personal preference. :)

during my internship i used a nikon d300 and that's what i used to think when i first got my canon 50D. but hey canon has this picture style function. you can adjust it to give you better saturation n contrast. my shoot buddies are nikon d90/80 users and so far, they cant help but admit that my 50D produces very nice colors. for canon its all about tuning the picture style settings. so in the end, both give you very good colors. however nikon cameras tend to over saturate a little bit. (this is my personal experience, and i'm no pro) anyway at the end of the day, if you're planning to post process your shots it wouldn't make a difference ya? nikon and canon are great camera makers. no doubt about that. i had a very hard time choosing between them myself. the reason why i settled for a canon is because their lenses are easily available plus its generally cheaper. if u wanna compare lens quality (image, built etc) both have pros and cons. some nikkor lenses are better, some canon lenses are better. one thing i regret not doing is reading up more, i regretted buying the kit lens and not getting the battery grip from the start. so be sure to read up and be fully aware of what you're buying k bro?

enjoy yourself!

well.. do note that canon can use Nikon lens with a simple adaptor while nikon cannot use canon lens..:)

That is bcos, Canon has wider lens mount, hence the lens mount would be protruding if there is such a adapter. And also for the same reason, entry level Canon tend to have smaller hand grips when compared to D70/90/ 5000D etc...

well.. for a newbie.. whom may want to buy low cost lens, then keep in mind that nikon ones are bit more expensive (but better build) .. like 50mm f.18, 35mm , 80mm ...

when it comes to the mid and higher end lens.. both are pretty much on par in terms of quality and price..

which one u wanna go for? hard to say... as u learn more on the way.

maybe start looking at nikon vs canon lenses and prices.. see which one u probably will buy.. look at the price and quality.. see which one is better.. then go for that particular brand.

some ppl also buy nikon as it can use all the old nikon lens.. but seriously.. u think u will buy those old 20 yrs old lens ? if u do then means u pretty knowledgeable and won't be asking this question in the 1st place.. hehe

i only said it.

.....geeeezzzzz guys....... just flip a coin and decide.......

For a beginner I think you need to consider the lenses that you'll want lo. If you intend to spend only on mid range lenses (like me) then need to decide on whether you are more of a UWA or standard or telephoto kind of guy.

The canon 10-22 is better than the nikon 10-24, the nikon 18-105 is better than the canon 18-135, the nikon 55-200 and canon 55-250 are about equal. For macro I suggest the tamron 90mm so this not a factor to consider. For fast standard primes, nikon has the 35 1.8 which is much better than canon's 35 f2 although the canon can also be used on FF. Canon can use nikon lens (with adapter and full manual mode) but nikon cannot use canon lens

If you have budget to go L lens level then it's another set of consideration.

IMO, both C and N have ensure there is no direct comparison. They carefully slot into the gap of the other competitor. Hence, there can be no end to comparisons. Just set your budget and see which body you can afford. D300 cost more than 50D > D90 > 500D > D5000 > 1000D. You will adapt your lens choices to the body. AF mount have a number of 3rd parties exotic lenses - CZ, Voigtlander, etc. EF mount can also accept using a variety of adapters and modification - Contax, Contax N, Leica R, CZ, Pentax, etc.... So the last thing to worry about are lenses. of course if you have specific requirements such as the best landscape zoom lens, then Nikon for the AF-S14-24 will be your choice. If you want proven sports photography, Canon with its huge array of L telezoom and tele lenses will be suitable. Else just pick which camera body is in your price range.

This question came across my mind when i wanted to buy my dslr.
in the end i got myself a canon 500D without touching any nikon.
why i buy 500D is because the price is about my budget and it come with hd recording.

There are many thing you need to consider before buying one.

Feel the camera in your hand.
higher range dslr will have better grip but $ also more, weight more also.
the material is different due to the constrution of the body.

Camera speed
just like car, the faster it goes. $ also increase

Colour tone
Different brand camera will give different colour tone etc...
so try out the camera 1st.

Crop factor
Canon EFS lenses cannot be use in full fame body.
If you are thinking of upgrade to full frame in the future, think twice about buying your 2nd lens.
I think it's the same for nikon and many other brand.

You can try sony, i think their dslr are cheap and the staff are very helpful to give you assistant.

and good luck to your dslr hunt.

yup, i've been reading up on clubsnap to get an idea and did searches alr. sorry to all those who mentioned that i should have done a search !! and i really should have, my apologies !!

i do like the canon interface and am familiar with the system already, however, i cant compare cus i have only used canon before. im renting a canon camera and a nikon one soon to compare the two though (:

OK, this is getting a bit flamey, don't you think, guys?

This is where my question will kill off all topics of discussion (for the rest wanting to drill with the TS):

Have you played on a compact camera yet?

If not, start your journey there. Investment into a particular system (especially with Canon/Nikon/Sony-Minolta/Olympus-Four-Thirds/Pentax systems now on the market) requires extensive research (hence the many "SEARCH THE FORUM" replies). You could theoretically switch over to another system, but when you've already invested a lot of money on one system, it's going to be very hard to let go of them, with whatnot the many accessories you can never inter-exchange with another system.

So, yes. There's no point in buying any brand unless you've already acquired some photography skills. Start out with a compact, then come back with which model you want. (By then you should have already made a decision on which system/brand you want to invest on.)

hmm could you explain what a compact camera is ? is it like a normal digi cam ?

This link is interesting....but he's nikon supportor...
http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/nikon-vs-canon.htm

Is true canon cam can used nikon lens but nikon cam cannot used canon lens?
due to the crop factor 1.5 (nikon) vs 1.6 (canon)?

that was the past. its not the case anymore. when canon changed its entire lens system back in the mid 80s...everything was uniquely "canon" already. cannot cross-use.

Actually, every canon dslr from the cheapest 1000d to the most expensive 1dsmkIII can use nikon lenses with an adapter. Metering works as per normal, only thing is need to manual focus and manually control the aperture. I myself am using a manual nikon micro lens. The manual focus takes some getting used to but after a while you can get used to it. There are 3 main types of nikon manual lenses ais, ai and non-ai. The non ai lenses are very cheap because they can't be used on mid to high range nikon dslrs (why I don't know but you can check on nikon forum). They can be used on entry level nikon dslrs but the camera will not meter so you need to shoot in manual mode and guess your exposure.
