Owned an Epson 810 for about 6 years, since day 1 spending every other weekend declogging the darn thing, and each time I run the declogging cycle (need to do it 5-6 times to clear everything), uses up $10 of ink. I was spending a fortune on ink (1 black and 1 colour costs about $60) like $300 a year and after this nightmare ..... sometimes the $60 only lasts a month and not that many prints because most of the ink was used declogging the printhead. Towards the end there was also a lot of streaking.... so I junked it.

Bought a Canon iP4680 and after 3 months, has NEVER clogged. Because I don't have to declog the printer, the ink lasts much longer, and it has never missed a beat. I expect to cut my ink costs by half (am still running on the originals that came with the printer).

I know the new Epsons are better, but I cannot forgive them....

which model?

since i sold the brands mentioned before here is my observation.

Epson, not much on reliability but have speed and original inks damn cheap. Nice photo printing.

Brother, very very hard to spoil but speed is slow. Value for money since include card reader and useful though slow photo printing. ink quite affordable but does self cleaning whenever power on.

HP, most buy for the branding but once the inks finish a lot will start looking for 3rd party inks which could jam the printers. Cheaper to buy new printer then new set of ink for mid range.

Canon, excellent photo printing and speed with affordable ink but warranty not as long as Epson or Brother unless pay for extend warranty.

good review... thks...

i uses canon dye sublination type for 4R prints... i ever bought a canon ink printer... but the ink never ran out the printer spoilt already :p

Canon is much better in terms of quality and price.

I'm still using brother. which sucks ink like free. dun buy.

This brother printer I've been using for abt 3yrs. Last yr, the ink absorber full, have to send in to the service centre. The person told me not to off my printer after use. but gov ask us to save electricity leh. becoz if u on it the next time, the printer do some cleaning USING YOUR INK. Hence, ink use v fast and the absorber also gets full easily.

Therefore, dun buy. I'll still carry on using the brother printer though till it dies off. However, if u thinking of getting a printer, it's PC show now!!! Get those with external inks kap by sepon. My friend has one and the first set of ink hasnt even reach half after 1 yr!! He prints alot for his school work when he bought it that time.

Canon all the way!:)
No particular reason. Just prefer canon over the rest.

;p

Presonally I have been using Epson for a long time and have previously owned Canon and HP printers too. If you are talking about image quality vs price, you can't beat the Epson.
(Not even Canon although in itself the image quality should be able to satisfy the majority who are not fussy on IQ). Images on the Epson are truer to life and colour rendition is better as far as I can judge.

However, if you are talking about the clogging issue, then Epson lose in that area judging from the feedback. I had an Epson R210 previously. Never once clogged on me though. I do head cleaning once every few months as a standard practice. However, another Epson C43 I had did had a clogging problem after 2 years only. Presently it can only print in b/w and not colour inspite of buying a new colour cartridge and cleaning. (selling it off as a document printer..interested? heh heh)

Then it came the time to upgrade and I shortlisted to the IP4680 and Epson 290/270.
The Canon did have some cool features like duplex printing but in the end, I chose output quality and running cost over more features. Doing a survey on ink cartridges, I came to the conclusion Canon's consumables cost more.

Anyway, that is my take. Now I have a new Epson 290 sitting on my table. (anyone interested in my old R210 can PM me! :) )

I'm still using the Epson RX-510 and apparently, the thing never clogs. I suspect it's because the printer uses dye inks, which probably have finer particles than pigment inks. From experience, the Epson pigment printers were quite a nightmare because they'd clog once I kept them idle for a couple weeks. The RX-510 never seems to get a clogged nozzle even after a couple months laying fallow. Or maybe it's just the printer. *shrugs*

I just realised that my Epson R310 has died on me. :(

Haven't used it for a long time and it was just sitting idly around. Just printed out an A4 photo and the colour was completely off! It didn't even look like a photo, more like a IR type image! Sigh, that's what you get when you leave the machine unused for too long.

I am now thinking of buying a new photo printer. Would still consider Epson but after this experience, very inclined to try Canon instead.

Would appreciate any comments on Epson vs Canon and the recommended models. For me, the ability to print upto A4 is sufficient, otherwise the footprint for the physical printer is too large for my liking. I have a separate colour laser printer hooked up wirelessly for my daily use, so this photo printer would be solely for printing photos only. I am only a hobbyist and am not printing for commercial use - rather, it is just for me to experiment with printing my own photos at home.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Did you try a few cycles of inkhead cleaning yet? Or maybe your cartridges may need replacement? :)

This Canon Pixma Pro 9000 seems quite a good photo printer with wide gamut colours. I am going to get one. Wonder what is the street price and anyone has any experience on this printer. The RRP is S$799. I assumed street is less than $700.

I have wanted to get the 9500 MkII for the 3 monochrome but think it is too expensive at 1k+.

Q: which is better for photo printing ? Laserjet or inkjet?

Very interesting thread.

Yup True "photo finisher shop like in the shopping center" most of them are craps.
Any recommendation shops?

Me too thinking to get a printer. Any of you guys. Print out the prints and your client are very happy with the printing?

Customer say something like " wahhhh so nice where you print?"

I have used expensive printer before like 3 years back. Maintenance and high cost. Every 6 months I send for servicing because the quality print out going downwards. Since now very high tech surely got powerful printer.

I dont mind paying like $1k type of Photo printer up to A3 enough for me. Most of the reviews i read on the internet like 50/50 something like canon vs nikon? hahahha

I am doing a home business based as a freelance photographer.

Tips: Your Print out you can laminate with special laminating papers. Will give you a special kind of feeling on the photo.

Thanks in advance.

I think Laserjet is better than inkjet.

I read review seems Canon Pixma Pro 9000 have the potential.

I am in the same boat as you are, the ink is cheap because it is normally use for cleaning the print head most of the time, when it clean, I can only print about 5 photos and that it, I have to change new ink. it give me a nightmare and in the end I change it to HP which last for at least 5 years before it die on me..... now I don't have any printer and looking around...

I have been using HP but always seems to have software issue with my PC... so my HP all in one is out..... I am thinking of getting a separate Scanner and Printer....

I am thinking of getting IP 3680 or 4680 with 8800F.... The 8800 is a good scanner, and seems this is the best scanner, and have better resolution than AIO.....

Which one is better??? IP 3680/4680... their properties seems close....

I had tough time with Epson... the H/W is not very reliable.. the S/W is not really compatible with my MAC and had lot of trouble even with windows.. but the print is good when it prints :)
Thinking of getting myself a Canon soon

just bought a canon at best denki roadshow...PIXMA IP4760 inkjet photo-printer...
salesman told me use 3rd party ink will damage the printer is it true??

3rd party ink usually will not work properly on your printer because the printer was never calibrated for that ink. hence, the colors will probably be wrong. (if you don't care, i suppose you can still accept bad colors.)

also, the ink may have components that may react badly to your printer. (cause clogs, eat your PCB, etc) i wouldn't trust 3rd party ink.

in the end, you have to decide if you can accept that versus the amount of money you can save by buying that ink. is the price difference worth it?
