Canon G10

Hi, I am new to this forum.

I am considering to buy between G10 and LX3. Don't know which one to buy as reviews for both are good. Currently using an IXUS. Wanna upgrade to a semi-pro camera.

Can anyone advise?

Thanks in advance!

the main reason i got G10 over LX3 is the compatibility of my 580EX II on it & it fits great on my hand & with my wife. "good lighting will beat fast lens"... LX3 is no slouch thou.

thanks! but if I wanna take pictures of my newborn... faster lens is better right? pardon me as I am new in photography.

The sensor size of G10 and LX3 are relatively small compare to the senors from DSLRs so no matter how fast the lens are, the low light picture quality from G10 or LX3 will not be as good. I would suggest you go for one that can take external flash such as G10 (not sure about LX3) so you have an option. Canon just came out with a small flash - 270EX which will fit G10 quite nicely.

just want to shake what G10 can do with external flash.;)
(sorry for the white balance, both are jpeg.)

cool! But to capture expressions of a baby, which is better? G10 or LX3? Personally i prefer G10, but one of my friend recommends LX3 strongly.

Another setback about LX3 is that it has only 2.5x Optical Zoom.

Actually, i think she's looking for a cam that has the least lag cos babies won't pose for you and a lot of the "aw..so cute" moments are gone in a flash and all you get are blurry pics.

thechinesebonbon, u r right! so any recommendations? G10 or LX3?

I prefer a faster lens when taking pictures of moving babies, as there will be less blur and wasted shots. If you agree, then LX3 fits the bill.

Just (today) bought a G10 from MS Color at $770. Comes with 8GB SD and kit (yet to be collected from Harbour Front). Added in a screen protector at $8, borrowed a temporary 2GB SD card and the camera is ready to go into action. Took a few shots and pictures look quite impressive. The camera has all the essential buttons and knobs conveniently located at the right places. Big screen too.

G10 is really a good cam. Used G3, 10D, 40D and 1D2 before, G10 is relatively small, fun and sharp. For babies not a issue, but if shooting kids playing..a DSLR is better.Do get a external flash for G10 too, it will definately show a big diff with normal compact at indoors.

Tested both and G10 seems to be a better all rounder.
LX3's lack of zoom, no built-in viewfinder and inaccurate LCD color were obvious let downs ( I had an LX2 before )
The G10 controls are great and easy to handle. Camera is well built and easy to hold. Viewfinder is essential for some situations. Ability to mount my EX flash was also an added advantage. However, NOISE handling is not very good for the G10. Feel some graininess creeping in even as low as ISO 200.

But overall, the PROs outweigh the CONs and I got myself the G10 in the end. No regrets at all!

Handheld (hands still not steady .....hehe)
Notice some noise visible

LX3 definitely has a faster lens and its a good camera. The pics are also very sharp. I have not played with the LX3 long enough but the LX2 which I had previously doesn't perform well in its AUTO mode. My wifey gave up using the auto function and went back to the fuji which was easier to use. The LX series seems to be more a photographers' camera and with the correct settings such as WB (LX2 auto has terrible WB) the LX series can produce very very good pics. However, when it came to upgrading to the LX3 or the G10, I chose the G10 for the above mentioned reasons.

But seriously, I think you maybe pleasantly surprised how an entry level dslr may suit your needs better.

Thanks for all the suggestions! Went down today to take alook at G10 and LX3 again. Prefer the controls and dials of G10. Most likely going to buy the G10!

I did consider an entry level dSLR but portability and size is also my consideration. Wanted something more compact that I can carry around in my bag.

Oh! u just bought today? Does MS color have the best offer for G10? What do they offer? does it come with any leather case, tripod or cleaning kit?

The offer price of $770 is almost the same at few shops. I was told the kit contains a bag, cleaning cloth, tripod or something like that. Haven't collected it from Harbour Front yet.

There is a new shop called Oriental at Sim Lim Square 5th storey selling the G10 for $760 when I walked in 2 days ago but they had only one set. The serial number of that set was too close to the ones mentioned at Canon's website, so I decided to wait.
