Canon EOS 5DS and 5DSR

For those who reserved what will you be using the 5DS or 5DS R for? Wildlife? Birds? Landscape? Studio?

How many years have we all been 'hoping'?... I too lend my hope in DR improvements and it now rests with the 5D4. :) Here's my take in Canon's strategy over the past 4 or 5 years: With over-all camera technology, Canon had been behind in 3 strategic areas i) AF technology ii) MP resolution iii) Wide DR Here, in my humble opinion, is how Canon has 'corrected' its deficiencies in these three key areas: a) With the introduction of the 5D3, Canon had at least met and may have slightly exceeded leading edge AF technology. Prior to the 5D3, there were many complaints and defections because of Canon's inferior AF-technology. These complaints have been completely silenced. b) With the recent announcement of the 5DS/5DSr, Canon exceeded the MP resolution for DSLR's. Although the cameras are still to be introduced and much testing will occur, I believe that based on Canon's history, these cameras will likely function at a similar level as its competitors or may even exceed them when high resolution IQ is taken into consideration. Of course DR is still not a factor in its favour. c) The next strategic area that Canon still has to address, is widening its DR capabilities. In order to remain competitive and to answer the many complaints of its customers, I really believe that there is 'sufficient competency' in Canon's management to meet or exceed the current level of leading DR technology. Based on the prior two points above, I sincerely believe that Canon is working to address this as we read this. I may be overly optimistic but I think that Canon's answer to the DR dilemma will be answered with he next iteration of the 5D.

Could u elaborate on Canon AF Technology?
I heard many people who had used both Nikon and Canon said Canon AF is better in terms of speed.

haha i thought the 24-70F4L IS was a pretty decent lens compared to the 24-105 which many loved to hate just because it was a kit lens.

the latest lenses so far have been pretty good.

i just hope the 5D4 will have much better DR and ISO performance vs the current 5D3.

Was looking at the samples posted by canon japan for the 5DSR.... apart from the hippo shot from the 5DSR and the portrait shot from the 5DS, the rest of the samples are frankly quite disappointing.

the "fantasy" image shows even the 24-70 F2.8 II at F11 can't resolve the 50MP sensor properly...

5Ds:

5DSR:

The details caught are excellent.
Can u elaborate what do u mean by "can't resolve the 50MP sensor properly."? as i find the photo quite well taken.

Maybe the lens quality can't match up to the sensor quality

A Canon Europe CPS representative mentioned that Canon lenses marketed 2010 and newer can resolve high pixel image sensors.

This may be an issue for me for 1/3rd of what I have is pre-2010 but then again will anyone but 1% really notice? :)

That seems to be the consensus. For several years Canon was lagging in their AF technology compared to competitors. In the last 3 or 4 years they've really improved in this area by leaps and bounds to a point that they are at least as good as the competition if not better. Not only have they improved speed, but they've also increased the AF points and in my opinion most importantly, they've also increased consistency in capturing solid focus. This article sheds some light in the improvements to consistency...

In terms of advancement Canon has improved above other camera manufacturers in the recent few years...only alot of people still think Canon hasn't done anything.....I saw a video from Tony northrup on his YouTube showing the tech advancements..Canon one is slow and steady.till the recent few years they shot up passing the rest

Hi, can anyone who has been to the 5DS and 5DSR presentation at the Drama Centre, please share your views and any information that might be helpful?. It would be much appreciated. Thank you.

The image quality of the 5DS and 5DSR is amazing.

I am not sure how they do it.

I shot the same scene with both 5DSR and 5DM3.

5DSR is so much sharper. Yes, even at 1:1 view.

=====================================================

Potential downside is that the handshake is more visible now.

Because of the 50 megapixel image, at 1:1 view, I noticed a slight blur in the eyes of the subject.

Might not be a problem if you downsize at the same resolution for your client. But need to make mental note that if you are planning to crop. Use 1/(2 x focal length) to be safe.

=====================================================

The handling is pretty good. Familiar compared to 5DM3. Though I cant really say for sure as I cant hold the camera properly due to the security straps.

=====================================================

I shot at their highest native ISO of 6400 and it handles fine. I cannot say whether its better than 5DM3 as my 5DM3 sensor is slowly degrading after years of usage. Alot of color noise/artifact.

Need to compare two cameras with new sensor to be fair. Just for curiosity sake, the new 5DSR camera noise is at least 2 times better than my 3years plus 5DM3.

=====================================================

Points to note:-
They are using 4k resolution. I have to set the monitor resolution to 2560/1440. Even then it still seems sharper.
There could be slight sharpness variations as the 5DM3 and 5DSR are not using the exact same lens. Only the same model.

I'm pretty impressed on the high iso too even though it is capped at 6400. Thought that it was bad like some earlier remarks made on the Internet.

Thank you alpha1ma for your review and kel77 on the iso. My main interest in the cam is also about iso perfomance and noise. Looks like a winner if street price is below $5k.

Canon's pricing is $5099 and $5399. And yes it should be slightly below 5k for the 5Ds for shop prices.

For those who are keen, there are some RAW files from the 5DS/5DSr for download on Dpreview

Comparison between 5D Mark III and 5DS.
I took it for Canon EOS world and these photos will be there
in a couple of weeks.

There are other sample images I took.

By posting this, I think many should know how I am as
I'm the only one with the camera firing.

Thank you for posting.

I would like to know if the 1.3 0r 1.6 mode is used, would the depth of field be no different from using a crop camera using the same lens? For example, is the DoF of an image shot with a 200mm f2.8with the 5DS in 1.6 crop factor mode the same as one shot using the same lens with say the 7D mk2?

Q & A from Canon 5DS developer answers my query. The crop mode is a straight crop, no other special processing.

- Can you tell us how we can make good use of the Crop Shooting feature?

Tachibana: This feature allows you to enjoy a pseudo-telephoto effect, while it also expands the relative size of the AF area at the same time. We have received many requests in the past to expand the AF area outward, but this was a challenging task due to the structure of the phase-difference AF. With the relative expansion in the size of the AF area using the Crop Shooting feature, framing is now made more versatile. Favourable feedback has also been obtained from professional photographers who have taken trial shots using this feature. Of course, since there are sufficient pixels, you can create a pseudo-telephoto effect while maintaining the image quality.

your Flickr I checked is using 7D2 not 5Ds or 5DsR.

B&H is reporting a June 14th ship date. This is surprising since Canon estimated close to the end of June when it announced the 5Ds and 5DsR.

Shouldn't be too much longer for the rest of the world.
