Canon EOS 5DS and 5DSR

Being a press release I doubt they will mention the sensor is from Sony (even if true) but I am with you. Assuming there will be a bigger dynamic range, it's strange it's not mentioned here other than a single line.

I am eagerly awaiting the release and testing of this camera, hopefully the current crop of lenses (Mk 2s) will be able to resolve such a high mp.

Yes, sure enough the mega pixels are impressive but without the 'fix' to dynamic range which is what the world appears to be wanting, the utility of these new cameras may be limited in scope. I too am looking forward to the testing and reviews sure to come out in droves over the next few months and trust that Canon knew what it was doing as it released several new Mark II lenses over the past several months.

I am sure that 2015 will be a very interesting year for Canon and the world of photography.

Not just Canon but yea. Am definitely looking forward to seeing the results of tests. Better yet if RAW files are uploaded for us to play around with it.

Its official...

"The EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R Digital SLR cameras are scheduled to be available through authorized Canon dealers in June 2015 for estimated retail prices of US$3,699.00 and US$3,899.00 for the body only, respectively."

Canon sg just announced also with other cameras n new equip..

never mention whether at 1.3x and 1.6x crop, the fps will be higher. only stated 5fps at full 50mp

so... we looking at SG prices to be close to $6k mebbe (with all the usual markups...)?:dunno:

Read of it in gizmodo (http://gizmodo.com/canon-5ds-and-5ds-r-the-highest-resolution-full-frame-1683275915), it seemed that Canon have been forthright about the noise control of the 5Ds and 5DsR, which is about the same as the 7D mkII which was an APS-C sensor camera  Well... might not be important for some people, but it is kind of a put off. Anyway, I find 50MP a bit hard to handle for me, having used Nikon 36MP D800E, I think I will patiently wait for the 5DmkIV (rumoured to be announced in August this year) and I heard that pixel count will not be this extreme. But I do welcome Canon back into the game :cheergal:

A quick read on some of the reviews on the new 5DS and 5DSR, it seems to me that Canon intend these 2 DSLR to be more like a specialist camera, more for portrait or landscape still shooters. Rather than the do it all capability of 5DmkIII.

this comment from the DPreview handson article is quite disappointing for me...same DR as 5DIII, no reason for me to update...

As far as dynamic range is concerned, we're told that the new 5DS and 5DS R should give the same performance as the current EOS 5D Mark III. If true, this means that the new cameras won't be able to offer the same industry-leading dynamic range of Sony's current APS-C and full-frame sensors, but at least it isn't a step backwards. And hey - 50MP!

I believe Canon wasn't looking at existing 5DMk3 general users when they announce these 2. I feel it's more to supplement the existing line up.

Wah same dynamic range as the 5DMK3? That's bad news, considering the file size of 50 megapixels photos, the more you bracket, the faster your hard disk will run out of space.

And I cannot imagine processing panorama with 50 megapixels/frame when my i7 rig is already choking on 36 megapixels files.

ya hehe... i probably belong to the 5D4 target group of customers.... but the disappointment remains on dynamic range not improving....

alot of ppl were hoping that the DR on these new cameras will be improved or on par with Sony's latest sensor offerings

I agree with many of the comments above. The hope of improved DR did not materialize and this one point is quite disheartening. The only feature that stands out in these cameras are the 50 mega pixels which renders them as specialist cameras.

I guess the only hope left is with the introduction of the Canon 5DIV and the possible upgrade to the current Canon 1Dx. The collective hope of the Canon world rests on these two cameras for improvements in DR.

It seems given current technology, 50mp with increased dynamic range is still not reachable yet. Too many pixels crammed together in the same space - cant imagine how 'rich' each pixel would be.

Probably something closer to the a7s' resolution would be a place with better dynamic range until there is an amazing leap in technology.

As it is we are already seeing apsc hit a wall in recent years, topping out at 20-24mp which is almost as dense as the new 50mp sensot. Im guessing the time when we hit a new height in apsc resolution will be when we get better dynamic range.

I am not sure the 'increased dynamic range' which you mentioned, what is it relative to? Is it the 5DsR relative to the current industry benchmark(D750/D810/A7 series)? Or the industry benchmark not able to go even further on?

I feel that it is a Canon issue because Nikon and Sony have been climbing higher and higher since years ago but Canon is still loitering at midpoint, not sure which route to embark on.

If Canon cannot do a 50 megapixels sensor with 14 EV of dynamic range, then don't. Concentrate on improving the quality of the sensor first, before going nuts on the megapixel count.

A lot of time, more is really not more. After so many years, Canon still does not get it.
