The difference is rather significant if you're comparing EF 75-300mm against Tamron or Sigma 70-300mm. Quality, range and macro ability is nowhere near Tamron or Sigma.
Of course, Tamron and Sigma are definately better.

Not always. Tamron and Sigma owns at times.

EF 75-300mm pales in comparison against Tamron & Sigma 70-300mm. Both Tamron's & Sigma's 70-300mm offers shorter focusing distance when macro mode is selected. For Tamron, it can only be activated when you zoom till 180mm and beyond. Not sure about the Sigma's lens but roughly about the same.

And nope, there can be crap lens from Canon as well.

Call up OP first. There should be new ones.

ya i guess i shld go for 1st hand 1st. i also duno hw to test or examine a 2nd hand lens. skali blur blur buy liao got problem they say is like tat 1 i also duno.

Tamron is quite good for that price range.
I am the user of this lens.
Just for your information, new lens sometimes also got problem with front/back focusing issue or some quality issues one. Therefore, you are encouraged to check them before you buy it. I have tried to get a new Tamron 70-300 lens before but after trying few sets of the new lens, I cannot find one that is ok for me one.
And I end up with buying a 6 mths old 2nd hand unit from B&S which doesn't have the problems for all that and still got 2.5 years warranty.

Well, if you don't know how to examine a 2nd hand lens, would it make it any easier for you to examine a first hand lens? Haha...:)

Bring your camera along. Take a picture. Zoom in to the max. See if there's purple fringing on horizontal lines, or vertical lines. If there is, dump that copy, ask for another copy. Check the focusing. Can it focus well and accurate. Same thing, maximize the picture on your camera screen and have a rough gauge.

Exterior wise, check the zoom ring and focus ring, turn properly. Smell the lens if possible. New/Virgin lenses have that new rubbery smell. Old/Non-Virgin lenses won't have that smell. Virgin, meaning, the lens has been untouched by anyone, except you. Haha.

That should be all you need to check. Check if all the accesories come together and make sure your warranty card is present and chopped, by the shop. Take your receipt, go home, make a copy. The inks on receipts fade after awhile.

Hope it helps.

If you want, i can check out for you at JOHN 3:16, on Wednesday the earliest. Save you the trouble of going there and not having the lens. I'll be there on Wednesday.

get the 55-250 lah...won't give u dat much problem...

resale value higher in case u dun them..

I think can just head straight to OP instead. They should have the 70-300 variant of Tamron and Sigma.

But why that model instead of the 55-250 which has IS? :dunno:

I was also thinking of the both but then James @ CP told me about the differences. I was actually set on the 55-250 but only ask his opinion for fun. Haha! ;)

i also tinking 50mm makes quite a big difference in magnification. coz i was thinking my kit lens from 18 to 55 about 40mm difference in length alredi got big difference in image size liao. tat xtra 50mm cld b fun and add more versatility.
