Does this mean we can find $500 300D's in B&S soon ?

Looks good indeed. It's features will suffice for most users and professional (event) photographers. ETTL-II, 8 MP sensor, larger buffer and the instant start-up are very useful features.

I'm puzzled about the choice of batts too...

Btw, I did not manage to read any info on the AF system though - anyone knows if it's using the 20D's 9 pt AF or is it still on the 7 pt AF?

Hmm... It seems that the announcement of 350D is not supposed to be official yet as they should be an embargo of the news of this camera until Canon officially announced.

One of the website break the embargo to announce the 350D before it is suppose to be, or somebody actually found a link in the website where it should not be there.

In DPReview, Phil Askey has removed all the links in the forum.

Should be still using the same 7 pt AF as on the old 300D body. See this link: http://www.pma-show.com/review/canon/002_EOS_digital_rebel_xt.html 3rd pic from the top, shows the 7 pt. AF pattern on the focusing screen.

yep. almost the same, but half the speed. but, darn... still no spot metering?

Ask yourself this, how often do you use the spot meter? And will partial meter work just fine?

even 20D has no spot meter.

The body seems plastic like 300D and not those magnesium alloy kind, at the back of the cam it is also not the same turning knob unlike the 10d/20d, the mode knob on top looks like the Minolta 7D type. Would still prefer the 20D over this.

Konica Minolta's knob is hell lot better looking... (rubberised knobs) unlike this 1...

anyway, its a budgeted DSLR... what can you expect? ;p

we should be seeing dilemma threads like...."350D vs 20D" or "350D vs D7D" or "350D vs D70" or "350D vs 10D, which should i buy?" pretty soon.... :bsmilie:

wow...Nikon D70 got serious competition liao...$US999 so street about S$1.6K?

The specs are impressive. At 1st glance, 20D users who don't need ISO expansion or fast speed may actually be better off with this 350D! Sounds like a good backup camera

no. i was right. the new 350D has the same partial metering as found the 20D (which is 9% at centre; same as 10D). this is not spot metering.

if u wanna talk abt true spot metering, its something like D70's 1% of frame. see the specs at dpreview for comparison. this is a major bugbear among 10D and 20D users who crave for true spot metering as found in the 1-series bodies.

According to Pop Photo, the D70's spot metering covers 5% not 1% as claimed by Nikon. Not too sure if this is true

An excerpt from Pop Photo: http://www.popularphotography.com/article.asp?section_id=2&article_id=978
The D70 is the first DSLR with adjustable centerweighted metering, a real plus (see graphs). But its spotmeter measures 5 percent of the viewing area, not 1 percent as claimed

Anyway, overall, the 350D is a very nice cam for its targetted market. I actually expected more crippled features.
BTW I was wondering if you all noticed that the actual MP of the 350D 7.96 MP (3456 X 2304) is just a tad less than the 20D's 8.18 MP (3504 X2336)

Kudos to Canon for the bodies - but for lenses, I'm not too excited about their producing more and more EFS lenses, slow lenses and DO lenses. I think the 3rd party lens makers have done better. None of their lenses produced in recent years since the 17-40L has excited me

ARGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!

I'm really dying for dis cam right NOW!

Wonder if the shutter will be as loud as the 20D..... :bsmilie:

heehee... i borrowed a fren's 1dmkII body in dec to use. mebbe its just my lousy techniques. but, i did find the spot metering pretty useful when both of us were out shooting in the hot sunlight of sentosa, compared to the partial metering on my 10D. then again, like i said, could be just me lah.

still, this new cam looks good. and yes, shame abt the batts. izit of a lower charge, the powershot batts, compared to the 511?
