Canon EF 40mm F2.8 STM

Haha, yes, the filter is only $40, i bought the Clear one, not the UV Haze and i have to put filter..it saved me once when i dropped my 85mm lens..the filter smashed but the lens was fine..imagine what would happen if i didn't have a filter..ever since then, i only use B+W for all my lenses :) BUT i so admit, i don't think the pancake was designed to be used with a filter..the lens element is sooo small..the filter MIGHT have effect on it..but it's ok to me…better to have protection :) hehe

My photos were taken at a restaurant so i presume the ISO was 1600 and above..didn't check...

Bro, the 52mm B+W filter is only $40.. where you bought it at near $100? :bsmilie:

Anyways, I bought this pancake. VERY sharp wide open.

I have never bought B&W before. Usually anything with B in front and W, made in Germany, is quite expensive :)

I think you can do away with the filter. See your HDB test shot. The right side has some dark banding. This is the same result as the tester from dpreview who also has a filter on. I think the design of the lens does not permit filter. Anyway, the front element is quite tiny and the lens relatively affordable. No need to protect and sacrify IQ.

Furthermore, you are using 5D3. What is ISO 1600 :)

yup, bought this to play with, looks like a not bad light lens to put inside your pocket or acts as a body cap :bsmilie:

anyways, just realized this lens is made in Malaysia :bsmilie:

the only body cap that lets you shoot picture with "body cap on" okay! :bsmilie:

make sure you sent your 5D3 to CSC for the fix first before you do so, don't say I never wong you first hor! :bsmilie:

Think it has 7 blades...

I was thinking about this lens, then I have the 50mm1.8. I can't think of any reason to get this? Anyone wants to help me do ab anaylsis?

This lens' centre sharpness is good. Below is a 100% crop of this lens shot wide open on my 5D3.

ISO12,800, f/2.8, 1/500s:

See the amount of details.. :D

Wow.... seven for this a cup lens is seriously great..... no wonder the bokeh look good....

If u think u have a 50mm f1.8, and not sure why you need this, i think the boken n seven blades are good reason for it... plus stm...

How about the focusing speed? My guess would be, it is slower than USM..

Yes it is..but you shouldn't be comparing it to USM..it's more a kit lens replacement this STM technology..not a USM replacement..

However, as sharp as this lens is at f2.8, it vignettes quite badly at f2.8..only after f4 does it improve and at f8 is where it's totally vignette free.
This does give it a nice effect but for some shots, you don't wan the vignette. Maybe when the lens correction data is available, this would be a great lens.
As for the 50mm lenses..i don't think they show as much vignetting at f2.8 as this lens…that's why there's still a market for the 50mm…this never was made to replace them.
