Canon EF 40mm F2.8 STM

Yes it is..but you shouldn't be comparing it to USM..it's more a kit lens replacement this STM technology..not a USM replacement..

However, as sharp as this lens is at f2.8, it vignettes quite badly at f2.8..only after f4 does it improve and at f8 is where it's totally vignette free.
This does give it a nice effect but for some shots, you don't wan the vignette. Maybe when the lens correction data is available, this would be a great lens.
As for the 50mm lenses..i don't think they show as much vignetting at f2.8 as this lens…that's why there's still a market for the 50mm…this never was made to replace them.

true...It will be nice when future kit lens have silent focusing.. I believe from dpreview, I read (from a post) that the focusing speed is rated 7/10 comparing to 17-55's 10/10 for focusing. While 18-55 gets a 4/10

Still, looking at how this lens performs, I think the only spec I like from this lens (over my 50 f1.8) is the 7 blade aperture...

if this lens pair with a 600D what u all think? or FF better?

It'll work with any camera..just need to bare in mind the focal length on a crop..and see if that's OK with you…if you currently have a 50mm on a crop and you're ok with that.you're likely to be ok with this as well.
40mmx1.6=64mm so it's not really a "standard" range..

the pan cake size just makes it so tempting, i have a 35mm f2, but its makes those "screeching" sounds.. should i change to the new 40mm?

hows the focusing speed of this lens like??...
STM vs USM??..

looks like a very nice lens.

i believe this will be good for those using crop cameras who find 50mm f1.8 too tight for them.

as 35mm f2 / f1.4 is only 5mm difference, this is a cheaper solution.

I'm having the same thought too...............

Been looking for the outlook for the 40mm on 5 :) But it doesnt really seems very matching thou the quality seems pretty good. Vignetting is not a bad issue since i like to create the Vignetting effects too. =) Good lens for traveling light. May consider it.

Same here. I like vignetting for street shots, gives the photos a certain mood. And based on the photos I see online, the degree of the dark cornes isn't excessive, quite the nice amount

I know the STM motor was made for video but it's NOT that silent anyways..i think it's still noisier than USM?
I was testing it for video just now for fun and when i played back, i can clearly hear the motor focusing quite easily…not sure how this is supposed to be better for video though…i don't do videos…i was just trying out for fun..

Here's the video of the noise comparison between the 50mm f/1.8 micro motor and the 40mm f/2.8 STM. Sounds way better!

Yes it's way quieter than the 50 f1.8 for sure but i don't think people use that for videos in the first place :)

Anyways, i'll be giving hte 40mm lens a good workout tomorrow during a photoshoot and i will be comparing it with the 50mm f1.4 and the 85mm f1.8 at f5.6 for portraits with an identical setting..see how it fairs.

However, after reading up on the MTF50 charts for these lenses, what i've seen is at f2.8 the 40mm center sharpness is just slightly less than the 50 and 85..but the corder sharpness is way better than both.
At f4 however, the 50 and 85 takes over…
So although those are just chart figures..from what i've shot so far with the 40mm, it does seem accurate..but the real test comes tomorrow..i'll post photos of the result for you to guess which is which...

Will be looking forward to your photos! :D

Btw, how much and where you got your 40mm lens from? Thanks.

I'll looking forward to seeing your test too. May I suggest that you take photos of the same object with the camera on a tripod to keep things in the same perspective. :)

Here are 2 photos..
1 with the 40mm and the other at 50mm both at f5.6
Sorry photos not exact.. i couldn't possibly ask the model to hold her pose hwile i change my lens for testing :) This was merely a TEST shot not the actual photoshoot.
I started with a 40mm for the photoshoot but soon gave up after a few shots, not because it's not sharp..because the foral range is just weird…maybe i'm just too used to using 50 and 85…can't get use tot he 40mm…to me, i don't think it's a good portrait lens..too small to "hold" properly also.

Go guess which is which la..but don't look at metadata :)

haha I got it wrong. I thought the first was 40mm :bsmilie:

Aiyah, you gave it away!….Anyways. in terms of sharpness…at f5.6, the 50mm is sharper than the 40 BUT at corner sharpness, the 50 is way worse than the 40mm…most likely becuase of the 10mm difference also.

So the 40mm really IS a very good lens for general shooting for almost anything….BUT just not for portraits…it's just too wide and things just don't fit into the frame for some reason…even walking nearing didn't help…maybe on a crop it will be better for portraits?

SO ultimately, portrait shooting is what i like doing more these days and i won't be using the 40mm anymore for it because i tried and didn't like it for portraits..i'll stick with my 50 and 85mm for that…the 40 will still be my body cap :)

I know a better test would be identical pose, identical image, identical lighting or rather, better lighting…tripod etc…BUT i was there for a photoshoot primarily, not to test the lens :) I only took a few minutes to take some random snaps with the 2 lenses..but like i said, even before i started reviewing images, i didn't enjoy the 40mm for portraits and didn't use it anymore after these few shots.
