Canon EF 40mm F2.8 STM

haha I got it wrong. I thought the first was 40mm :bsmilie:

It's actually hard to tell them apart. Even the FOV is rather close but not close enough that one couldn't tell them apart. Still.... colour saturation, contrast and sharpness are reasonably close.

here's how the pancake looks like on a gripped 5d3

Cute but strange. No wonder it attracts gawkers. To me it looks like a camera with its nose punched in. I like it!

I think most of us still use manual focus when we r filming. Hehe

if u cant think of any reason then u dont need it lol

if you have extra money to get it, then just buy it. think a reason to cover it later after u buy and use it :p

Yes, unless you pixel peep, they are incredibly close…It wasn't down to which was sharper but rather which focal range suited better for what you want it for. Hence i said the 50 is still better for portraits and the 40 better for general shooting.

However, having said that, the 40 is half the price and half the size at half the weight :)
Canon REALLY needs to update their 50 and 85 lenses…if they can make a pancake equal to them in IQ, i'm sure they can improve the 50 and 85 to make it better..

Yes it does attract gawks :bsmilie:

Once there was this lady that stared at my camera as she walked passed me.. it was like "wow that's a very big camera.. but wait, wtf is that lens? is it a lens? :o"

:bsmilie:

Somewhere at Marina Bay, a lovely thirty something South American lady wearing sheer black nylons initiates a short conversation between herself and a camera owner...

Beautiful Lady: WTF?

Camera Owner: What do you mean?

Beautiful Lady: What's That Food on your camera?

Camera Owner: Oh you mean this (pointing to his smallish 40mm lens).

Beautiful Lady: Yeah WTF (what's that food)?

Camera Owner: It's my small pancake lens!

Beautiful Lady: Do you have to feed it maple sirup to make it work?

Camera Owner: Not at all. It works just fine with a little TLC (tender lovin care)!

With this post, I think this thread has reached a low point!

I was thinking about this lens, then I have the 50mm1.8. I can't think of any reason to get this? Anyone wants to help me do ab anaylsis?

Guess if you need:
1) faster AF
2) better bokeh

bare in mind, slower lens but more useful focal length in my opinion.

just to add... i am one of those clowns who has the 50mm/f1.8 and decided to go and get the 40mm/f2.8. did some side-by-side bokeh test of the 2 lens. i know the FOV is different, but that is not the point of this.

LOL. I didn't realize that the structure directly behind the toy fire truck was a chair until the f/8 photo. When I first saw it at f/2.8, I thought it was a piano!!!

Just came out hot from oven. :D

Not going into very technical review. When i compare side by side with my 50mm "L", I would say it's a why not!

& this might be your most expensive camera body cap, leave it on. :D
