Canon EF 40mm F2.8 STM

beginning to like this little lens more than the 50/1.8... :)

taken on a 350D. it's actually quite a nice FOV on a DX camera.

Nope, this is the STM issue. I had the same problem.

Esoeji bro, this problem happens when you force the "zoom" in when your camera powers off. As we know, the lens extends a little when focusing. Some people have the tendency to force this extension back by pushing it by force when they want to store their camera or lens.

It is not recommended to do so. For USM lens, I recommend retracting the extension by using focus ring. HOWEVER, the problem with this STM lens is that the manual focus DOES NOT work without power on. It's the same idea as the USM motor for 85L.

Thus, to prevent this issue, I suggest the following methods to retract the extension when you want to keep it:
1) Manually turn the focus ring while your body is powered on to retract the extension
2) Place your lens cap on and half press the shutter button. Since lens cap is on, lens will focus hunt by zooming from MFD to infinity. As such, the lens will extend to the max, then retracts to the minimum. When it is at the minimum, release your hold on shutter, and turn off your camera body.

The above will fix your problem. I doubt CSC can do sh1t about it, it's a design issue.

In anycase, if you do happen to force on (accidentally or not) the focus extension while power is off, when you turn on your cam, the AF will fail. To fix this, turn off your cam, disconnect your lens and connect it back.

Hope the above helps.

great advice!

Hi,

I just got the pancake last week and here is the first frame I took with it. I quite like this lens and in fact prefer it to my EF 50mm f1.2
The size of it makes it really gd to just keep on the body and it's more convenient to use for everyday shooting or "just in case" situations
I noticed it handles well in low light with is always a gd thing to have. I use mainly a 50d. One thing I must say is that it is not that silent as they say and the AF is a smidge laggy probably cos I'm used to the USM characteristics. Overall I'm really happy with this buy.

I actually found the STM to be slightly laggy compared to the USM but the MF has a smoother feel. Here's a pic at 2.8
I didn't think that the 10mm difference (compared to the 50mm f1.2) would enable me to get much closer to my subject but it does make a substantial enough difference in my opinion and I'm quite happy with it. It does allow me to get slightly closer with my 50d. Nice.

i'm pretty stoked about the size too. i used to think the 50/1.8 or 35/2 was small already (at that time la).

i miss having MF though for low-light situations when AF is just abysmal.

still thinking if i wanna get this lens as my first prime lens. the thought of having something small and light with my 5D3 is very tempting...

i wouldn't say that this is the best prime lens, but for it's price its definitely a good first prime lens to start with

How the 50mm f1.8 performs compared to 40mm f2.8? Still deciding between this 2 lenses. Any experts? Thanks. :D

The 50 f1.8 is half the price bare that in mind..
That aside, the 50 is pure plastic..sure you get the 1.8 but you can't really shoot it at 1.8 and hope to get good results. I'm pretty sure the 50 at f2.8 is as good as the 40 at f2.8..
The 40 is much better made than the 50 1.8….
If you ask me, unless you can get a 50 1.4 or 1.2 skip the 1.8 and get this instead. Build quality does make a difference...

Thanks for the feedback. Guess I shall head down to the usual shops next week (after pay day) to get it :)

Who here doesn't like their Pancake?
So far with most lenses, there are equal haters vs likers..
But for this lens..it seems like there isn't one who hates it…
I think Canon should make more pancakes!
