Canon EF 24-70 VERSION 2 WHEN?

I think that IS on the 24-70mm lens is a good-to-have, but not a must-have, unless you need to shoot at really low shutter speeds, say less than 1/50 most of the time and you can't use a tripod/monopod. As for the Tamron VC version, you can go google the reviews or go browse the Tamron thread on this lens. It's generally got pretty positive reviews and at its current street price of about S$1688, it's more than S$1000 cheaper than the Canon Mk2.

That is the main reason why I bought the Tamron even though it cost abt the same 24-70F2.8 (Mark 1)

IS is important if you are shooting video or intentional low shutter speed.
Other than that, shooting at 1/60 and above will do.
I set at minimum 1/125, who cares about IS and shaking hands.
If u can justify Top IQ quality, this is the best lens to get.

IMO Canon did a booboo with the pricing of the mk2: it should be around S$2k and then they can come out with the IS version around S$3k.
If you price the non-IS version at S$3k, then how much will the IS version cost? S$4k S$5k? Who in their right minds will spend that kind of money on a standard zoom?

As for whether IS is needed: there are times when you do want to shoot at lower shutter speeds to show motion.
Also at higher shutter speeds, something has to give, typically needing higher ISOs which means noise.
IS means you get the shot without the shake and to an event photographer, this is very important. There are no re-takes for events.

AFAIK, the mk2 was sold out at a number of shops when it was launched. Prob due to a combination of pent up demand and small supply. It makes sense for Canon to set the launch price high, to cream off the most eager buyers first (myself included!), then lower the price over time. By the time the IS version is out (assuming Canon will make this lens), prob can price at $3k plus?

Just notice that we are able to update this lens firmware via the cam body. Same for 40mm stm.
Maybe all newer lens can do that? So, we need not go csc for update anymore.

I disagree with the need for IS for the lens.It's a want yes,but it's definitely not a need.The new bodies come equipped with fantastic ISO capabilities which compensates for stability.

In an actual event situation, even if i had IS to assist me on taking a relatively sharp picture, it will never allow me to freeze motion blur, of which i find is critical for what I do.

An event isn't any much use if all you capture is motion blur. (Assuming one shoots without a flash.)

Eh? IS is not to reduce motion blur but to reduce camera shake. On the contrary, high ISO will as it allows a higher shutter speed.

I think you misread my post.

With IS= more stability even at low shutter speeds. But low shutter speeds gives way to motion blur. And I don't want that and can work with large apertures+high ISOs to bump up my shutter speed. I used to deal with this even when I was on a 20D and I think the ISO capabilities are considered primitive by today's standards.YMMV of course.

When they don't have stock they can quote any price they like. The point is moot. Unless the shop is prepared to commit to that price or lower. Otherwise it's all vapourware. This applies to any shop that quotes a low price but does not have stocks.
