Canon EF 24-70 VERSION 2 WHEN?

Actually i did a google search on this issue and only came across lensrental.com's article. Other than that there haven't been talk about this. Perhaps we need to take into consideration the price point and the fact that the lens gets shipped around many times.

Yes cause for concern but don't lose sleep over it. Just use normally. How many of us ship our lenses multiple times or abuse them in a normal shooting scenario. Not me.

If I owned this lens I would still be concerned. Here's my reasoning... The issue presented itself early to the Lens Rental people because of the abuse their equipment takes under the stress of shipping. The issue is not how stressful the equipment was handled but how delicately the second lens element was fixed to the lens barrel. Tamron only put three glue points. There were no metal clips or clamps used... just glue. Lens Rentals has suggested that it is not uncommon to have a lens element glued to the barrel however, this the largest lens element they've seen glued in this way. This suggests that all lens elements of this size are fixed by clip, clamp or ring. Tamron's new 24-70 lens, is the exception.

Here is the original article from Lens Rentals - Tamron 24-70 Lens Issue

Given enough time, the issue may manifest with many more individuals. The only other variable is how 'roughly' is the equipment handled. What's even more scarier is the lack of communication from Tamron. Lens Rentals have complained to them and Tamron has sent the affected lens to Japan for 'further study'. So far, there is no indication of time lines, acknowledgement of the issue, or any communication to owners regarding 'what to do if this happens to you'.

The saving grace however is the local warranty... oh wait... is it 5 years or 3 years? Another poster has carefully read the warranty information from Tamron. Here is what he found:

The Tamron lens comes with an automatic 3 years warranty and to qualify for the additional 2 years warranty, please bring the lens to GSH service center for re-registration within 1 month after the end of the 3 years warranty period

Owners are expected to remember to bring their Tamron lenses 30 days after their 3 year warranty has expired. I wonder what the success rate has been in the past? Have registered owners ever received an e-mail from Tamron to remind them of this obligation? Very tricky.

I don't see the logic of Tamron 3+2 years guarantee except that they just hoped after 3years n1 mth, ppl wud forget abt the guarantee whilst they ca market their lens as havg 5 yrs warranty.
Anyway I read re-read reviews n sample shots n video using the tamron 24-70 VC n was unable to be drawn to purchase it. I just trusted the Canon 24-70mm Mkii n bot it. No regrets n am not bothered abt reviews of it actually..maybe until the Canon 24-70 with IS comes in

Eh you different la. Hahaha. You a prime person in the mid range focal length. This is more for those who are concerned with this issue.

yeah, 35mm 50mm 85mm, slurp slurp :D

Hehe.... seems you have a much better review of 24-70mm II than what I have read...........

I am still undecided due to the reviews.... so will wait a while and think if I want to HOOT............. at the moments, seems like many good review online... and only issue I thought to me was the 70mm sharpness...... Hmmmm....

Yeah.. Consider carefully before hooting this expensive lens :)

With the 6D announcement, I am considering it too. . .

I do shoot portraits, food at times n I hv 85mm 1.8, 100mm macro n 135mm 2.... all do not need a fast body... but ff make a big difference.... n these lens are good enough to pair with it...

7D can be my event body with 17-55....

Plus I suspect canon crippled 70mm sharpest so they can launch one IS version a year later..... lol.... so I thinking kiv lens n go ff body...

Most zoom lens, Tele is the sharpest but this is reverse..... a bit suspicious..

Cos if you want a sharp 70mm.. Canon wants you to buy one of the 70-200s or a 85mm prime :bsmilie:

Read the reviews of both lenses and frankly, IMO I'll still go for the Tamron, mainly because I like the bokeh and the price...lol

But I'll wait a little while longer for the price to drop a bit more first and also maybe Tamron can fix this issue...I have other lenses to cover that range anyway...

As lensrentals said in their review, it only occurred in 3 of 10 lenses after multiple shipments, so its like 3% of the first batch. I can live with that.

Do you mean 30% of the first batch?

Canon is now a farm and prefers to produce milk..... milking us.....

I think it is not impossible they launch a 24-70 2.8IS..... since their 70-200mm got 4 versions.... the IS version are the sharpest...... not a coincidence right..... so

I hv the 70-200mm f4.... but it is troublesome to change lens.....

I can wait for now....

30% is simply based on lens count. 3% rate is after considering the number of "to and fro" shipments they made to the customers for rental. This is my understanding.

They will launch the 24-70 f/2.8L IS. I think the next update, they will have it, maybe they want to monitor the popularity of the Tamron VC first, then produce a 24-70 f/2.8L IS that will totally outclass it, but I expect the SGD RRP to be the same level as 70-200 f/2.8L IS II - $3,999.

I will not be surprised. Canon is not known as a farm for no good reason..... haha.....

Hv you gotten the 600 ex RT...

Yeah, Canon is such a farm. Got the 600EX-RT but too expensive to build a multi-flash system around.. going back old school.

The exposure is much more consistent n does look much nicer...... I'm slowly building it up. Will try to sell some flash too...

Here's another shot of my CFO with the 24-70 ii. Definitely can't complain on the lens performance and the sharpness on my copy...but then again i'm no pixel peeper.

Easy to carry, versatile and fast. This and 1 more lens, the TS-E 17mm to London and Paris this year ,then Santorini the following.

It should be fun.

The Digital Picture has part 1 of his review up > Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L II USM Lens Review

The Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L II USM Lens is clearly the best performing Canon full-frame-compatible general purpose zoom lens available. It is the best from both an image quality perspective and from an AF speed/accuracy perspective. This lens is very sharp/has excellent contrast across the frame even at f/2.8, is well built, focuses extremely fast and contains a most-used range of focal lengths. The cons? Price and lack of image stabilization.

Digital Picture review is good but it is tend to be pro-Canon IMO. I think Photozone's review is more neutral.

I trust photozone more...... so was a bit disappointed with the 70mm border sharpness....... maybe IS version will happens

I was going through the Canon Rumor Forum, and it does seems like the 24-70 II have quite a bit of variation from samples to samples....

So if going for this lens, gotta do really careful testing... .I am hoping the later production batches will be better....... hence.... will play more waiting game........... maybe after 6D launched and then, consider my option.............

Always best to avoid beta-testing.
