Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender1.4x !!

Wonder what the MTF charts for this lens would look like... but constant aperture of f4 sounds good.

Instead of producing more and more telephotos, i think perhaps Canon should start revamping its lineup of standard zoom lenses. Sure, nothing grabs the attention of photography enthusiast like a big new white lens, but i believe what the majority of photographers want is not a 200-400mm but perhaps a new 17-55L (or 24-70 II).

I think around the price range of $5-7K.....

Nikkon 200-400 F4 VRII already cost around USD6.4k.
This baby with the sophiscated built-in 1.4x TC looks likely will be way higher.

I think Canon are looking at them too.... but maybe WIP......

This F4 lens does make a lot of sense..... it is different range from 100-300mm, and 70-200mm F4/2.8......

200 - 560mm, plus new build it TC.... only thing I wonder is how durable will it be with the TC build in..... It is refreshing to see new technological advancement, but just hope it is durable...... price.... sadly, it is not going to be within most mortal reach....

So now... the F4 trinity is broken.... what should it be called???

17-40 F4, 24-105 F4, 70-200 F4 & 200-400 F4????

The built in teleconverter probably adds convenience, and perhaps more matching optics for the 200-400 assembly itself.

Kudos to Canon team. Always expect much interesting developments from Canon.

Few years down the road, maybe next update would be 500mm 600mm 800mm with built in 1.4x extender. Or maybe even can choose to use the inbuilt 1.4x and 2x hahaha.

Woah, Canon's all out to break new ground with their past releases.. Exciting times

Quadruplet?

Of the four members, the 17-40 f/4 is the one most in need of an upgrade.

I am sure the theoretical MTF from Canon would be a straight line at the top ;)

Agree. Canon used to rule the world with it's Great Whites. Now that others have caught up, Canon wants to create a lead again.

here's my interpretation on how the built in 1.4x works...

theres a bulging part behind the silver thing (for strap). thats the casing where you rest the optics of the 1.4x when not in use. and above it is the lever switch with "1x", "LOCK", and "1.4x" markings...

here's a cross section looking from the behind the lens...

red position is 1x and blue position is 1.4x...

Thanks for the illustration, very nice. You can go work for Nikon.

Seems like the tripod collar is built in also

The 1.4x TC is 7E3G and weigh 200g. I am also expecting swift and silent motorised movement of the TC and not just a lever switch.

Motor adds complexity, parts, cost and also potential reliability. But whether it's manual or motorized, I'm wondering how they allow users to calibrate it.

can cold storage the 100-400 once it's out.
great new tech.
