Canon 7D or 5D Classic for your Taste?

to TS...if both are brand new, i'd go for a 5D classic anyday. nothing beats FF for what i want to shoot.

5D is defintely the best SLR for the money. cheap and simple. Does away with all the gimmicks and just lets you shoot your best shots. Its sharp compare to my 40D. the dynamic range seems much better too. Agree with most that they have different purpose. My 40D is now dedicated for using with long zoom only. the 5D for low light, thin DoF, landscape wide angle. After seeing the IQ, ive hardly use my 40D. For similar price to the 7D, i would go for 5D, unless u need video or need wireless flash triggering.

5D is a full frame suited for thin dof (portraiture) and landscapes, and 7D is a crop suited for range, speed, macro (deeper dof).

very different ball game they play. if you were asking between two crops, then perhaps there'd be much more to compare. =)

i'd go 5D. =D for my 'tastes'

Amen to that - same sentiments. :thumbsup: I like ur statement: "Does away with all the gimmicks and just lets you shoot your best shots.", the 5D is precisely that.

Using exact same combo as you too - 5D/40D - a FF and a 1.6x crop both gives you great versatility. But for single body option, and best IQ, 5D is still the one to get.

Upgraded to 7D for its speed but will probably get a 5D as a secondary for FF.

IQ wise, definitely a FF will deliver.

A FF & crop combo is very welcoming.

Try some alternative lenses ( Leica, Zeiss, Nikon, Olympus OM or Pentax M42 or K) on your
5D and there is no turning back.

Since the pooling title ISO PERFORMANCE, I'll vote 7D... But for bokeh, I'll vote 5D.

Both camera are good... they serve for different purpose.

normally what shooting mode you in when shooting birds in bright daylight, AV, TV?
and the aperture and shutter speed? i always get blur picture or bird too dark as backgroud too bright.

Have you tried 5D?
Quite a number of users report 5D is still sharper and retain more details with the same lens.

Really? Decided to put this diffraction s**t to the test at f/11. 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM lens on 450D vs 7D.

Tripod mounted. Manual focus. RAW to jpeg using LR 2.6.

Both shots @ 55 mm, ISO 100, f/11, 1/25 sec.

Overall:

Now, 450D left and 7D right. Roof shingles. 450D upscaled to 7D resolution to demonstrate what happens when the images are printed on the same scale:

Well, so much for this diffraction garbage. Even with diffraction in place, the 7D still out-resolves the 450D.

There's another comparison of 7D vs 50D/500D vs 1Ds3 here where the photographer has used a sharp macro lens to prove the 7D shows MORE (albeit not substantial) details than the 500D/50D sensor.

Unless Canon has gone bonkers and decides to sell WORSE cameras at higher prices, the only other possibility is that many folks have no idea what they're talking about. The challenge with 7D is that one needs to use defect-free copies of good lenses (without any decentering defects) to fully make use of that 18 MP capability. Anything less is a disservice to the camera. :bsmilie:



Due to its larger sensor, the 5D has more light gathering ability at the sensor level. Consequently, its greatest advantage over smaller sensors is low shot noise, i.e., in well-exposed portions of a scene. HOWEVER, when it comes to read noise (due to electronics) at the pixel level, the 5D sensor is showing its age. So, in the very dark areas of a scene or at VERY high ISO levels, the 7D will easily outperform the 5D. The awful high ISO banding of the 5D only makes it worse.

i feel 7d's price is pretty steep for crop factor. Other for its speed, video and some additional features, I don't see whats so different about 7d compared to 50d. Rather pay another 1k for a decent 5dmkii full frame. Either that, go for a portable 500/550d.

of course for 5D classic, buy at your own risk. Is digic 2 and has been around coming to 4 to 5 years already.

Its like comparing Apple to Orange. Both are good for different purpose. Get one that you'll use more, then save up to buy the other. Either one can be the backup body of the other. 57D offer best of both world.

I am using 5D for 3 years and love it, however, I always wish it can do more fps. Still thinking of getting the 7D to compliment my 5D for the speed and HD video.
Only if the 7D is 1.3 crop factor, i will buy it straight away. Still considering....
