Canon 7D. Home run? Disappointment?

Whoot! Got my 7D on Saturday. Works great. No complaints so far.

The on / off switch for 7D is brilliant. I love it compared to my 40D....

One thing that I really dislike about the 7D is the position of its on off switch. You need to use your left hand to turn it on instead of just a single thumb flick.

Welcome to the forum!

Yes, there is a wireless shutter release available for the 7D that is made by Canon. However, I found that 3rd party releases tend to have more functionality and are sometimes cheaper. I use and would highly recommend a product called "Phottix" which is generally available from most camera shops at Funan. I bought mine from TK Foto Technik. I think that the price was around S$80 but research this as I am guessing. What I like about the Phottix wireless remote is that it can also be used as a "wired" remote. Additionally it has a longer range and you are not limited to "line of sight". It is also more versatile than the Canon equivalent. Be sure to ask the staff how to use all the buttons if you decide to buy this.

There is no need to do a firmware upgrade as long as your camera is working well. However, many people (myself included) like to have the latest firmware possible. It is easy to do and takes about 10 minutes. You can get the latest firmware directly off the Canon website. Just check with your current firmware version and compare it the latest available on the website and if you feel you want to upgrade, just follow all the steps on the website. It is very easy to do.

Good luck. :)

Thank you Raydio, for your advise really appreciate it.... :)

Latest quote, inclusive of GST, I got from:

- TCW S$2150/- (Japan with shop warranty 1 year)
- TK Foto S$2170/- (Local)
- John 3:16 S$2250/- (they indicate no grey sets)

I am heading down to TK soon since they allow partial cash payment and partial credit installament.

:)

Grey means without the original warranty, there is a warranty card inside but is issued by other country. In another words, it is parallel import. Canon Singapore will not cover warranty as such. Chances also is that the set is selling cheaper than local set. But you never know what kind of QC has been done and the set might not be in full working conditions.

Below is a reply from fellow member CS Tan:
"Grey sets are still manufacturered by the original manufacturer so from the look of it, it will be exactly the same. However, for a particular model such as Canon XXXD, if it was imported from Japan, it will be called KISS and if the same is from USA, it will be branded as Rebel XT/XTi/Xsi etc...

When people mentioned grey set, they usually refer to the shop warranty instead of manufacturer local warranty. Cameras from Canon and Nikon come with local warranty so if the warranty card shows Canon HK or Nikon HK, then you can consider these grey sets.

It does not apply to the lenses as Canon and Nikon lenses has international warranty so even with a Canon HK or Nikon HK warranty card, you can still get warranty service from Singapore service centre. For the lens to be consider grey set (Canon and Nikon), they will not come with any warranty card, instead, the shop that sells you the lens will provide shop warranty so if there is a problem, you have to go back to the shop for servicing. The risk is that when you need to claim shop warranty, the shop might not be there to honor their shop warranty."

hey, thank so much for the details explanation! will bear this in mind when looking for gear. hmm so does it mean it's always safer to purchase a 'non-grey' set?

hmm sorry i'm still pretty confused when i read this. john saying they don't have grey sets. does it mean grey sets are good? good in terms of it being cheaper? but warranty issue is the problem. anything else i missed?

thanks! :)

You never know what country the 'grey' set can be orginate from. For example, the set might be made in HK, selling in HK for HK ppl with HK warranty. But when this set is imported into singapore, the HK warranty not longer acknowledge by Canon Singapore becos the status of the set is not determined. These 'grey' sets might not passed HK Canon's QC and ppl have ways to 'dig' out these rejected stocks, then imported into Singapore as 'grey' set.

The nature of these operations I am not sure, but well, buying from Canon Singapore makes more 'sense' of security. However if you wanna save these S$200/- with shop warranty, you might wanna try but their shop warranty might not cover some defects or whatsoever.

The ISO noise is VERY apparent at such a low ISO. What gives? I thought that 60D/550D/7D sensor should be relatively noise free even at 6400.
