1280mm would be far more ideal for wild life photography specifically birds.

just got my 7D + 15-85 + 8GB + screen protector + canon bag @ S$3280 from JO on saturday.
Upgrade from 500D. IQ is better, metering is way better ... so happy that I am still fiddling with it @ 1am in the morning
Downside for me are heavier, need to original battery (OEM battery screen will not light up) and I have to get a new shutter release cable for it.
i'm using 3rd party batt and the batt level indicator lights up

aiya, guys lets just wait till next month and see what new stuff they introduce! will be interesting to see what they release for their canon expo which is 2nd-3rd september if i'm not wrong. they confirm will show something power packed as this expo comes once every five years..

since im here, i wanna bitch about the 7D i got.
wth is wrong with canon. WHY a pictureStyle button. WHY? and they made it non customizable. It would be god's send if they replaced it with a Custom WB button! or a firmware upgrade that allows people to customise that button!
and now i believe rumours that the 7D heat heat up easily. only after a few hours of shooting, noise performance degrades noticeably. A usually clean ISO2500 image becomes quite noisy only after a few hours of shooting.
the joystick is quite far away... the only reason i use it is coz of adjusting +/- on my WB. otherwise its too far to use.
otherwise, the camera is pretty cool though =D

HUH SERIOUSLY! I did not know such thing was true!?
a videographer told me that on a wedding. he said his 7D over heats easily and shuts down itself quite frequently. After the firmware upgrade, the level at which it shuts itself down is raised, but is still quite bad.
when i first got my 7D i used it as a backup cam and shoots on iso3200, but i used it sparingly, using my 450D as main. the images are cool and smooth. but when i switched to using 7D as main, very quickly i noticed noisy pictures after a while and had to stop the iso down and use a slower shutterspeed and better handhold positions.
(bnow problems solved coz i only use primes with BIG hole. so no need bump iso up that much)

Recording video is known to heat up the sensor. Combine that with usage in say bright sunlight, yes you may overheat it if you shoot video continuously. Even the iphone has heating issues if left out in the sun and it will prompt you to let it cool down.
For your noisy pictures, are you comparing apple to apples? You may be shooting under slightly different conditions thus skewing your results.

I'm on the verge of splurging for a 7D.
Is it wise to purchase now? Or is there some impending newer 7D replacement coming out soon?
Just don't want to make the proverbial mistake of buying right before a new model rolls out.

7D was announced 1-Sep-09. If its shelf life follows that of other 'pro' models like the 5D, we won't see its replacement till ~ Aug/Sep-2012 (~ 3 years later).
It will be quite some time.. even the popular nikon D90 replacement came after 2 years

I was in the same situation as you and kept reading on net plus canon rumors etc for a few mths. But then I thought what the heck and just got one and now enjoying every moment of it. Better to take more pictures now than worry about new models coming later.

Go to SLR Revo and buy the compat Lp-e6 at $29 fully decoded so it will show batt indicator on your 7D.
i dont think battery failure or any form of defect on the battery is covered under warranty. Pretty standard for most consumer electronics and for canon DSLRs i presume.
as in the battery explode, drag the camera into coffin. can claim camera warranty. of cause', i suppose it's a case by case basis.
batt even if explode s during charging, not using from wat i have heard. since we charge the batt outside, the cam is safe.
