ok i'm going to share this...

a few weeks ago i was contemplating on replacing my rustic 30D with another cropped camera body to complement my FF. The main requirements were:

FAST and accurate AF

GOOD response

GOOD build quality to take my abuse

Therefore it was only natural that I looked at the 7D and a used 1DMkIIn

With the 1-series having only less half the pixel count AND Digic release (dual Digic 2s vs dual Digic 4s) as the 7D, and with it on average being $200-$300 cheaper, I ended up looking at a few 2nd hand ones on the market.

What I noticed after two weeks of using both was:

1- The 1D's able to utilize ALL of it's 8.2 mp. In fact, at 100% crop, the picture was so damn clear in RAW, I had no problem up-rezzing the pics to almost 12mp for large-scale printing.

In comparison, the 7D's 100% crops at 18mp were so terrible, one had to downsize the entire picture (while maintaining the same resolution) to around 13-14mp in order to get the same results as the 1DII at 12mp.

Now some of you might think i'm anal for comparing pixel to pixel, but in my line of work (i'm only freelance and not a full-time photog) that's very important to me as I don't like to "waste" things, and I believe in maximising whatever I have.

2- The AF and servo on the 7D was constantly unreliable alongside the 1DII - and yes, I do value 45-point AF.

3- The 1D's photos at ISO800 and ISO1600 were entirely useable and in RAW, i was able to cut down the noise at similar levels when compared to the 7D at ISO6400 after noise reduction. So in reality, I'm only getting 1 stop (measurement correct?) out of a camera body that is vastly newer in technology?

4- The 1DII, with a lithium batt and 17-40L is almost the same weight (if not negligibly heavier than a 7D) with batt grip and a full complement of batts in it.

5- The viewfinder of the 7D was surprisingly close to that of the 1D

6- And then there's the build quality and "satisfying shutter sound" as previously mentioned, altho less important

So guess which camera I settled for....

ok fine, i admit it is more tedious using a 1DIIn with it's awful user interface, AND equally tedious to PP the noise away if in bulk because i'm LAZZYYYYY. Oh and it has shitty battery life...:bsmilie:

Isn't it a 7D is more cropped then a 1DMkIIn?

If you would to crop a 7D the same factor as 1DMkIIn, isn't it you are cropping more. And since cropping producing expected deteriotion in the picture, isn't it is as expected?

High pixel density sensors easily expose: (i) lenses with poor quality (de-centering, AF miscalibration, chromatic aberration etc) (ii) slight camera shake (iii) slight misfocus. I suspect one or more of these is responsible for your experience.

Anyway, HERE is a direct comparison of several generations of Canon & Nikon APS-C DSLRs through different ISO levels. All images are uprezzed to 35 MP and all RAW images are processed with the same Lightroom settings.

So much for the pixel density myth.

Awesome comparison mate.

apparently the 7d has noise at iso 100??!! I was very shocked when i heard that. Can any user clarify of its true??

Only for those who has lemons.

Mine is now perfect. ISO100 no grains at all. Shoot 3200 also very very acceptable.

Am wondering if anyone has used the 7D with the 70-200 f/2.8 IS USM mkI? Heard its kinda soft wide open and am wondering if used on the 7D with its high pixel densitiy would make it worst?

Finally succumbed and bought one too :p

I bought the 7D mainly for video and some small photography projects.

Tried shooting sports with 7D.....totally cannot match up to the 1D3 that I am using. AF is so much less responsive compared to the 1D3.

So for still photos --> 1D3/4

For video --> 7D

I did not choose to go with the 1D4 mainly because 2 cameras gives me more flexibility when I use prime lenses.

brother,

You just broke the hearts of many 7D fans here who love their cam to bits. You just announced that 7D CMI.

Is it for real 7D CMI? I planning to upgrade one thou???

Just don't go try the 1D series so you won't have anything to compare with lor.....:bsmilie:

If you do not know what is better than 7D, then you will think 7D is the best lor.

But really, 7D images could not match up to the color rendition and AF speed and accuracy of the 1DM3. If you want to use 7D for sports....err...I will suggest for you to save up more to get a 1DM4. If not get a 2nd hand 1DM3.

Gosh...like that ah..Can consider 5D before breaking bank for 1Ds :) Thank you Lighting!

All those talk about 7D CMI are so lame... I have been using mine since Dec and have not been disappointed with it.. Still shots and videos are great though am more of a still pic user

personally, i will not buy a 1Dm3/4, it is so ex, a second hand 1Dm3 can easily cost $3500 to $4000, with that amount, i will rather buy a brand new 5Dm2, cheaper and take video.

I am using 7D too, so far so good. The AF system sibei tok kong, built is solid and weather sealed. I like the built in ISO reduction, very useful at high ISO.

when pair with my 17-55mm F2.8, then really no horse run.

Yep 7D is good until you start using 1D.....and you know the diff....eg. spot metering following your AF points. Multiple spot metering and super fast AF....something that the 7D is still miles away. Like I mention before.....don't try the 1D and you should be contented with the 7D.

yes, agree. something that we cannot deny about it that 1DM4 is good, but with that price tag, we can easily buy 3 7D, thank god i have not hands on 1D yet, else dont know how to resist if get hook.

right now i am very contented with my 7D.

I was really dissapointed with my 7D until i sent it back to canon for calibration.
It was consistently front focusing.

Pretty sharp now, keeper rates are alot better! Just posted some pictures taken when i was at sepang in the sports section

what lens you using? is your 7D the first few batches with serial starting from 02 or 03, this 2 batches has focusing problem.
