Canon 7D. Home run? Disappointment?

7D. Home Run OR Disappointment.

by itself 7D would be a winner, even when we look at Canon's line up, 7D is definitely a "home run".

However, don't we all like to compare? :p and also expects the cam to include every feature any other competitor cam have.

For me, it's a home run... that is until I heard about GF-1 :bsmilie:
The "stadium" suddenly expanded and we've got a out-field instead of a home-run

Yup, Was thinking of the 7D in light of various new offerings in the market at this time, not necessarily direct competitors.

Cryn: Like your point on how big the stadium becomes when you throw in even more makes and models in the mix. Pond is shrinking methinks... ;p

Being a Canon-user, was hoping for Canon to really prove a point (I'm an industry LEADER, I am!!) and shake things up a bit (like with the introduction of the first 'budget' DSLR the 300D and the pro 1 series), but maybe it's sentimental, wishful thinking on my part but then again, the industry itself is making it really challenging to 'hit one outta the park'. (Unless canon does takes Bro Kit's suggestions) :bsmilie:

My vote for most promising offering goes to the A850. 24+ megapix+ FF <US$2k ??? evil... a 5dmk2 killer if I ever saw one...

I think 60D will have:

- Same MP count (thank goodness!)
- Single Digic IV chip
- Improved AF. 19 AF maybe? Maybe less but Canon needs to ramp it up a bit so it compares favorably against Nikon D90's AF.
- Full HD video. Gut feel tells me Canon might "cripple" this a bit by making it similar to 500D (i.e. not customizable)

I don't think 60D will have the wireless flash trigger, among other things.

Let's get the 60D rumors started! LOL.

One of 5D2's selling points is its superb noise performance. A850, if using the same sensor as the A900, has nothing on it yet.

Though it is still excellent value for a FF camera:)

if i'm a sport / event shooter, 7d will be a good choice for me... i think...

Well, I was preparing to upgrade my 350D to a 50D, but decided to wait for a "60D". It seems like 7D's release just made my day. The price of 7D with the kit lens is lower than that of 50D Kit II when it was first released.

I'll get it once 7D is released in Singapore. Probably in another month or two. Will be a Christmas present to myself. Meanwhile, will be selling a lens or two to fund my purchase.

Suggest you wait abit more and then check on the review..... Its easy for Canon to claim this & that.... harder for it to really work. Anyone remember that 50D is suppose to the great at high ISO ???

Hmm yeah, true. I guess I'll heed your advice and give it a bit more wait, for a decent review before deciding. Gives me more time to raise fund, save up etc. Thanks for the advice. (:

Exactly. What drawn me to 5D2 are

1. FF that give me the full bokeh impact of 50/1.2, 85/1.2 & 135 f2 on FF,
2. larger brighter view finder
3. High ISO performance
4. IQ

What doesn't are:
5. price
6. file size
7. AF
8. fps

A850/A900 only tick 1(but without equivalent solid lens), 2 & 4, and at the same time tick all the 5,6,7 & 8. Comparatively, 7D tick 2, 3, 4, and on the negative side, didn't tick any of it. If 7D is launch side by side with 5D2, I may had choosen 7D over 5D2, but Sony, no.

Furthermore, Canon has too many good lens for me to even think about switching.

Hey, i'm in the same situation as you Zephyrus! I've been holding out to upgrade my 450D for a while now, initially wanted to go for 50D, but with all the "not that positive" reviews and the "losing out" to 500D concept kept me waiting.

Now my only dilemma is if 7D is THE upgrade from 50D (and there isn't any 60D at all!) oh well, goto wait a bit more i guess.

the 7d is suppose to be a range on its own. There should still be a 60d coming out.

Bro... 7D has 8fps. Is that not fast enough for you? It's AF system is supposed to be much better, though we'll not know until its launched. As for file size, shoot mRaw or sRaw lor.

Yup like mynameisgreg said, don't worry about the 60D not coming out, cause the 18-month cycle will be due in Feb 2010. Canon 60D will definitely be released in February or March 2010. I predict that we'll have to wait until about April before we can properly decide. I don't think the 60D is going to supersede the 7D anyway, but I'll wait. While waiting, I can save up more and increase my budget, and who knows, I might save up enough for a 5D Mk II! I'm sure prices will change, so lets just wait for another 6 months, haha.

Did I say 7D 8fps is not fast enough ? I say 7D don't have that downside of fps speed as 5D2... negative of a negative make positive :) same for AF & file size, both are negative of negative.

Frankly, I do not know where the so-called future 60D going to stand. To me 7D is just an upgrade to 50D. May be really no 60D at all.

Canon needs a new contender to go against Nikon's D90 and its future upgrade. 50D is not doing a good job, so perhaps 60D with a similar price range must come in.

A lot of consumers bought D90 as their first DSLR cause the price is still reasonable. Wonder how many beginners will buy 7D as their first cams?

I personally feel that the 7D is a big improvement. The 50D was a very small incremental upgrade from the 40D.
