Canon 550D

yup. i had a bad experience with third party hoods. i ordered one online from CS...and to my horror...it is a little bit smaller than the original one. i've used the 17-55 before so i know wad it looks like. and when i tried fitting it on a 17-40L (not mine)...it wldnt even fit into the threads. so i gave up and sent it back. i made a $4.40 loss. the person didnt even bother refunding my postage when i sent back to him. oh well. i just left it as it is, but i know i'll never buy from him again. btw im very sure its not the wrong model. VERY sure.

who is it? so that we can blacklist him.

... i lack nothing and nothing is holding me back...other than the lack of the longer focal range which i hardly use ...

I believe that is key to any activity, not just photography. To understand clearly what you wish to achieve, then get just the correct equipment that aids in that direction, with possibly some capacity to accomodate one's potential skill/usage growth. Nothing more.

There is little point in buying the latest, biggest, baddest version when the older version is perfectly usable, capable of achieving great results, and still not constraining one's activity and skillset.

Having stated that, the only thing I wish to get this year (other than my own dry cabinet which i have gotten last month) is the 60D if its capabilities match my requirements.

Best not to say here.

Yup. actually i was waiting for the 17-40 II to come out, but in the end i decided to get the 17-40 because it was good enough for me even when i tried it on a 5D2. on the 50D its great, tack sharp, contrasty and saturated. so decided to get it and then use it for as long as it fits my requirement. perhaps i may upgrade to mk II someday, or perhaps i'd get another lens...but for now, it matches exactly wad i want to do. capturing my own POV. and i am happy with it.

Hmm...seems like not too much news on this new model locally...

:dunno:

so.... any info on release dates and bundle kit lens?

Nope. No info.

But seeing that no new lens released, it’ll probably still be bundled with the usual 18-55 and 18-200 options. The preview video showing Canon’s hands on showed it with a 18-135 also, that’s not really very tempting. But it probably makes good marketing sense for them to do bundle with the 18-135.

Here in europe their selling price are as below;
Canon EOS 550D + 18-135 mm F/3.5-5.6 IS€ 1.024,00
Canon EOS 550D + 18-55 mm F/3.5-5.6 IS€ 808,00

Canon EOS 550D Body€ 709,00

Wah sian I just got my 500D yesterday :( oh well.
So what. just take the camera out, go and take great photos with it. Enjoy the experience. The release of the 550D does not make your pictures "worse" in any practical/significant way. Unless there's some crucial feature of the 550D that will provide astonishing results that you cannot with 500D, I would not sweat over it.

Cameras are not like phones or music players. Models even a few years back are capable of capturing stunning pictures. The 500D was released a couple of months after i bought the 450D, and i couldn't care less. Getting a 500D over a 450D would not have made me a "better" photographer.

agree, between the 500D and 550D not a far change. if really want to compare 7D to 1D mark 4 it really see the diff.

overall is all about how you take the picture. to updated on body it mean cost money, i really think save the money and get better lens :)

As a rule of thumb, should always get the newer model as it is packed with new features & has lower depreciation.

In fact, I had ordered a 500D from the CSC under the privileged buy back scheme and I had to changed my order a few days ago to a 550D. Just need to pay extra $20.

Was told by Canon that the body will arrive sometime 1 week after US launch. That means roughly first week of March. I am prepared to wait as I already have a 20D, which my 550D will replace (for my wife's benefit as it is smaller). After almost 6 years since my last DSLR, thought it is time for a newer model. Would have waited for 60D but xxD range is not under the privilege buy back scheme.

when I ordered my 500D last yr, 50D was also available through this program.. Body at $1509. Recently maybe removed from program due to release of 60D soon?? Hope they will put 60D in the program when it comes;)

Sorry to spoilt your hope. Doubt that it is removed because of 60D. Just ask yourself this. Is 500D removed before 550D is released?

Well said. Can't really understand the mentality of why someone would think his/her camera is any lesser just because a newer model came out.:dunno:

wow, for an entry level camera - this is insane! i m looking to sell my 50D for this 550D. the IQ looks to beat 50D hands down. wow...u guys think its worth it to do a switch from 50D to 550D? sorry OT abit, cuz need help. i dun shoot actions. i mainly do walkabout/travel, family, streets. so i figured i dun need fast fps.

u might wanna try to grip the cam first.... it might not fit nicely into your hands wor....
view finder think its smaller also right?... other things 50D has would be the AF micro adjustment, faster fps, better weather sealing etc.....

550D got HD video though... i am tempted too.. keke... sell 50D top up 1k + for 7D... might as well keep 50D and buy a 550D to compliment it...
