Canon 18-200mm F3.5-5.6 IS

I didn't use bulb mode for fireworks. I'm on 8 sec shutter speed. But I think bulb mode is more effective as you can control the length of exposure depending on the firework's burst... But my friend using bulb mode got so distracted by the fireworks that he forgot to off it... resulting in messy pictures.

I used Tv mode (8"), so the aperture was auto. ISO was at 100.

18-200mm F3.5-5.6 IS is a convenient lens, best for traveling, but 15-85 IS USM will get my vote regarding the image quality. 60D/7D + 15-85 + 35 f2 + 135 f2 is my favorite combo, can get any thing with this combo. Anh its not so expensive.

True but bringing more than 1 lens already defeats the purpose of why superzooms are created in the first place. As mentioned before, people who appreciates superzooms are not after IQ (important but not the sole factor of a photo) but more of framing in a very short period of time.

However i just hope canon comes up with version II, current model is starting to show abit of aging given tamron's new 18-270 and nikon's 18-200 VRII are out in the market. 70-200 f2.8II has shown us that zoom lenses have the potential to produce excellent IQ on par or better than some primes. So 18-200 has the potential also but again that might lose the purpose of being a kit lens at a reasonable price.

Took this during NDP preview with 18-200mm as well.
Wanted to take the photographer with the Singapore flag as background but just as I click the shutter.
Fireworks lighted up the background. Totally unexpected as it was the first blast.

Another shot I thought I wanted to share since so many asked for low light pics. :)

Below is a test shot using the Canon 18-200IS lens under in a shelter tent, this was shot with a focal length of about 150mm at F5.6. No speedlight or strobe is used.

Constructive criticisms & comments are welcomed... :)

A short summary of the test shots, I posted in this thread (limited to 5 pix per post), which IMHO highlight the versatility of this EF-S lens (currently my old crop lens, despite using mainly a FF now). The EXIF details of individual photos can be found in this thread, like always constructive criticisms & comments are welcomed.

Hi bro anson, I m trying to get a convenient superzoom recently to replace 18-55kit. When I almost make up the decision to get thammy 18-270, i do the last round research again.

Your thread pop up and I am reconsidering again. 18-200 & 18-270. Argh!

Besides that, your thread simply shows that skill is much more important than the equipment. Owning a same hardware doesnt mean that you can produce same picture quality!

Hope to see more good pics from here soon.

Just took out my kit lens to play in my room, so thought I just share what this lens is capable of.

Of course I have done some sharpening through post process but the original sharpness wasn't bad either (at f11). So simple shots like this doesn't require sophiscated setup, maybe your mobile phone is good enough!

Bump !

This is an excellent thread and fantastic lens, deserved a bump and more exposure ! :bsmilie:

my very humble shot (undeserving of this wonderful lens)

Both lenses are capable. IQ of the Canon 18-200 may be marginally better but the Tamron 18-270 has a lengthier focal range making it a little more versatile. Personally, I owned the Tamron 18-270 and was very satisfied with it. I used it primarily for travel photography as it was so convenient to transport on long flights. The only thing that may be a drawback for this lens is its lack of popularity. Allow me to explain....

I went exclusively to full frame last summer. I had five crop lenses to sell (4 Canons and 1 Tamron 18-270). The Canon lenses sold fairly quickly. The Tamron was the last to go. It took several weeks. I eventually sold it but it was a struggle compared to the Canon lenses. If you plan to use this lens for a long time, this consideration may not even be on your radar. Apart from this, I would highly recommend the Tamron.

Another test shot of using the Canon 18-200 IS lens with an aperture of F5 & shutter Speed of 1/160 sec. This time is a shot of "Kai Kai"
