Canon 10D outdated?

10D has slow start-up. Slow file write time. Tiny buffer. "Only" 6 megapixels. noisy at ISO 800 and above. BUT...I still love my 10D. :lovegrin:

the slower startup time compare to the recent models sometimes can be irritating. it can be avoided by disabling the auto off but at the expense of more batts to bring out for shoot.

This one shoot using 10D ISO 1600. Still acceptable.

The problem nowadays, esp since the advent of computers and mobile phones, is that people are obsessed with getting the latest toy. Why this obsession? I think people just want to show off that they own the latest gear.

Of course it is outdated compared to newer cams. But it takes great pictures and works, right? Functions perfectly. You know, when I talk on the phone, somehow, it sounds the same whether I use a Nokia 6150 or the latest Nokia.....

Why does anyone need anything more than a 10D?
If you need to take super wide angle shots, yes, there are limitations as it cannot take the 10-22 lens and third party equivalents.
If you need the speed, then yes, it is a bit slow and the buffer is not great.
If you need lower noise, yes, the newer cams are better.

But if you don't need any of the above, then it is perfectly fit for purpose. Any good photographer can work around the limitations above anyway.

On the plus side, a second hand 10D is fantastic value, considering how much it cost new.

With the digital revolution of cameras from film to digital, considering all the bells and whistles, marketing hype & cheap pricing by big companies. Its getting hard to differentiate between a true hobbyist whose aim and goal is achieving the true Nirvana and spirit of Photography and a gadget chaser whose goal is just getting the latest gadget and chasing the latest fad in town.

Of cos, with better economy turnaround and ppl getting richer, getting a (D)SLR isn't much of a problem for most people. We see ppl's first cameras are stuff like EOS 5D, EOS 1-series, Nikon D2/D1-series and modest kit lenses being dissed in favour of excellent optic lenses like Ls and Minolta Gs and quality sleeper consumer lenses are being laid aside, weeping silently in their own corners.

I would like to hear more technical comparison (ISO, Speed, Features...etc.) or perhaps photos comparison why 10D is still worth to buy nowadays as compare to new 350D (assume both are about the same price)

Wah bro...nice shot. :thumbsup: Its still the person behind that counts lar. Equipment is only secondary. 10D is still a decent cam for everyday, normal use.

10D vs 350D ... I would still buy 10D. Much better build, ergonomics, and features. Pic quality wise maybe 350D has a slight upper edge due to newer sensor but DarkForce's photo above is the proof in the pudding. :thumbsup:

So in terms of value and benefits, would you upgrade from a 10D to the 30D?

Was tempted to upgrade to 30D especially for the price, but after holding it for a while at MScolor, decide to skip this model, and see if 3D has a better feel. I like the feel of 5D but price not good feeling!

Sometime technical spec is not the only consideration. It has to do with the feel. The camera has to feel good in your hand in order to work with it for the entire day! Sometimes a very nice looking and lastest fashion sport shoe with the latest technology cannot beat the good old panda brand school shoe in terms of comfort which I wear everyday for 10 years.

10D was once used by wedding photographers all over the world, and pictures capture by it was "the best". So are we saying that the same picture that we see today is not good anymore?

But if you have the money and the newest camera feel right for you, then by all means get it. I will like to wait for the right camera with almost the same feel as 10D comes by, and of course at the right price before upgrading. As for now, getting a used 10D is definitely worth every cent!

No more, now they are selling 2nd hand 20D. Saw a few sets on sale, price range <$1,590. :bigeyes: The launched of the 30D has greatly impacted the brand new price & resale price of 20D.

Brand new 20D body ~ $1,800 at TCW

Brand new 20 body ~ $1,899 at CP

Then like that will also impact more on the 10D too.

mine was a little funny.....

initially the noise level was unacceptable. sent it in to canon for general servicing during downtime and when it came back the noise wasn't that bad. in fact the pictures were very usable at iso800.

dunno what canon did during servicing but i'm not complaining.

Are u using the latest firmware? Dunno if this has anything to do with noise level improvements. I'm using version 2.0.1

not too sure as my 10D is at canon but i quite sure the firmware is updated.

believe it or not it got short circuited by a faulty lens. caused the autofocusing to malfunction and error-99 reports when the shutter is hit.

U can go to yr menu screen and scroll from the bottom. It's stated at the last one which says 'Firmware Ver.'

Wow...then wouldn't servicing it cost a lot?
