Canon 10D outdated?

The problem nowadays, esp since the advent of computers and mobile phones, is that people are obsessed with getting the latest toy. Why this obsession? I think people just want to show off that they own the latest gear.

Of course it is outdated compared to newer cams. But it takes great pictures and works, right? Functions perfectly. You know, when I talk on the phone, somehow, it sounds the same whether I use a Nokia 6150 or the latest Nokia.....

Why does anyone need anything more than a 10D?
If you need to take super wide angle shots, yes, there are limitations as it cannot take the 10-22 lens and third party equivalents.
If you need the speed, then yes, it is a bit slow and the buffer is not great.
If you need lower noise, yes, the newer cams are better.

But if you don't need any of the above, then it is perfectly fit for purpose. Any good photographer can work around the limitations above anyway.

On the plus side, a second hand 10D is fantastic value, considering how much it cost new.

Has anyone ever thought of putting an EF-S mount ring into a 10D?

Of coz it's outdated if you wanna compare with the bells and whistles, but who cares? I'm still shooting with my antique 30+ years camera now and then. BTW, 10D's got the best sounding shutter from Canon DSLR range ;p

ain't dat true. when 20D was launched, my colleague wanted to upgrade from 10D -> 20D. went to mscolor to test.... and immediately returned the camera to the shelf after the 1st snap of the shutter... :bsmilie:

till today, he's still on his 10D. ;p

the 10D is a real workhorse. Even though it's been relegated to a backup camera for me i still depend on it for various situations.

the only gripe is the buffer which can be a real pain at times.

with that said, know and understand the capabilties and limitations of your equipment. and take full advantage of that and work around whatever shortfalls there may be.

I fully agree. I bought my 10D in 2003 and I don't really feel the need to upgrade it. Bottomline is that although it may help a little, you don't need good or the latest gear to take good photos.

Just sold off my trusty,seldom used 300D for a 2nd 10D!

I am pretty new to photography and have JUST enough to buy a canon 10D...is it worth buying the 10D or should i save up for the 350D. Also , is the 10D outdated?

if like some people, you are using the camera as a show-off device (occasionally can act like a real professional) then YES, the 10D is outdated.

I'm too still waiting for a quiet cam

Excellent if you want to be discreet... especially during ceremonies.

Hey guys thanks for all the feedback , looks like the 10D is a real tank.

btw whats the meaning of best sounding shutter? very noisy?

the 10D's shutter is nice and smooth; quiet though not silent. it's quite distinctive and reassuring; that's the best i can explain it at least for me.

the 10D is a solid camera, don't let the 'new technology talk' convince you otherwise. the shutter is also very quiet, which is something i like

Hi fintan,

I no chance to touch 350D so can't comment on it . Had a 10D and is really a good cam :)

So in terms of value and benefits, would you upgrade from a 10D to the 30D?

Hey there....i also just bought a 10D nearly 2 weeks ago and though it's launched in early 2003, it's still an awesome cam to me. No regrets!

I did juggle between the 10D and a new 350D but chose the 10D instead cos i like its larger semi-pro body and built. The 350D's too small for me.

Hi Snoweagle,

I assume a 2nd hand 10D? Is this still available in the market first hand?
I'm really worried about buying 2nd hand, warranty issues...

For me the answer is no :)

No. It is nice to upgrade to 30D, and I like that smell and feeling everytime I unpacked a new cam. But would rather save the money and spend it on lenses and courses. If the pro can get good pics from 10D in the past, why not now? it is still the same cam.

Will never swap my 10D with the 350D even if people wants to top up $500 for it :) 10D can definitely take more beating compared to 350D. Infact I chose 10D over 20D when I was deciding which cam to get. 10D simply feels solid!

I agree with u bro, its built quality is better than the 20D and 30D.

My next cam for my event work horse will the the 10D.

It is a very very good camera in my opinion if you are not fussy with the qualilty and functions it has...

Regards

Agree! Next for me is to get the grip but have to wait till sunday.

The 10D's shutter is less noisy and smoother when the mirror slaps up. One of my friend's using the 300D and he's amazed by the difference between the 2.
