Canon 10D focus adjustment

Has anyone had experience sending their 10D in for focus adjustment?

I had some free time today and did the chart test, discovering that some of my lenses are backfocusing by about 1-1.5 cm.

Thinking of sending in for adjustment, but not sure how experienced the service reps in Canon Singapore are.

Would like to hear of others' experiences before I go for it.

my 16-35 was backfocusing with d60 at shorter focus distances (roughly under about 5 feet) though all my other lenses were fine. I sent it to Canon and the tech said he found it odd since the 16-35 did not backfocus with canon's own body and the d60 did not backfocus with canon's 16-35. they tried to tweak it a bit but it still backfocuses a bit at close distance.

fortunately, after tweaking, the focus with my other lenses is still great. especially my 50 f/1.8 (others like Wai still had problems with 50 f/1.8 and received the explanation that it is a cheap lens so quality varies, so i guess i'm lucky)

The only thing i noticed was that my frame counter went up a few thousand(!!!!) on return, so i wonder what sort of testing they do.

Hey, I also experience 1 - 2mm back focus on my 10D with 70-200F4. Btw, I am going Canon tomorrow morning to let them correct it back. Canon rep said they are confidence to adjust it back to ideal.

I have done such adjustment before NDP and I have to say that it does have a good improvement in focusing performance. Now, I get more or less what I intend to shoot. Much less back focusing issues.

Turn over time for me was 72 hours. I sent mine in on Monday and got it back on a Wednesday. But it is always ideal to call ahead to ask them how back logged their work is...

uh... how did you all test for all these back/front focus.. and how exactly did you all measure the distance ?

pls do enlighten..

i don't use a dslr nor slr or what sorts so i wouldn't know..

I repeated the tests again, this time focusing from infinity and near distance. All my lenses are spot on, except for my 24-70L, which is a lemon (yeah, that's what the "L" stands for - lemon). It's got severe backfocusing. It definitely goes to Canon for adjustment.

Well, nice to know I'm not alone. Someone else (who uses a EOS 1D) pm-ed me to go down to Canon together with him, because his 24-70L is also backfocusing. At least I know it's not a problem with this combination of 24-70L and 10D only. Looks like there's a whole batch of rotten 24-70L's. *sigh* Should not have sold my Sigma 24-70 so quickly.

By the way, resetting the camera does not work, neither does installing the new firmware. Trust me. Maybe I need to sacrifice a virgin at midnight. Any volunteers?

Download the chart from the url posted earlier and test lor.
My 10D seems to be focusing accurately with all my lenses (including Sigmas) EXCEPT for the 24-70L. So must be a problem with the lens lor.

To offspring's question

1) Yes, you need to pay for recaliberation unless it is under warranty

2) If both the cam and the lens are back focusing, then yes you have to bring both in. Alternatively, you can bring you cam in first and then your lens. Most of the time, it is one or the other.

3) Yes, I do think that Canon does clean the camera if you specify if it is under warranty.

This is what Canon Tech told me.....

ans: FOC if it is under warranty

3) Does Canon clean lens/camera for free if under warranty?
ans: If it is minor, they will clean it for u free. But if it very serious, they will charge u even though it is under warranty cos it was not covered under Canon warranty.

Hmmm there really seems to be a 24-70 problem!!!! I did some tests last night on the 24-70 and it backfocuses quite badly in the 24 to 50 range and the 70 is inconsistent at times. The irony is that my 50mm and 100mm are ok!!! When I was there this morning at the service centre, another guy walked in with problems with the 24-70!!

Tell u all the truth, I could sense that they were nervous on this issue. It might be a manufacturing problem. I don't think Canon service center Singapore can do much other than sending my lens to factory for recalibration. In that case, I prefer to receiving a new replacement. It's not my fault to buy a back-focused lens. Canon should do an investigation in this case to evaluate the policy regarding calibrating/replacing back-focused 24-70L.
