Cannon D20 vs Nikon D70s

HI Guys,

Thanks for all your help and advice. Managed to sqeeze my way through the crazy crowd yesterday at Comex and tested out both the cameras. Of course I am not comparing apple to apple, but I felt more comfortable with the Canon 20D.

However, they were promoting the 350D more aggressively and the freebies were more for the 350D.

Could I again tap on your expertise as to the place that I should go to buy the 20D? And if you have the info, to be so kind as to tell me a good price to ask for the camera.

What other assessories should I consider too?

After all so much has been said.
Getting a DSLR, lots of factors to consider. but the most important is $$$.
How much are you willing to spent on camera as hobby?
As for the freebies, nothing is "free" all will be included in the price. just that see how much u think the freebies are worth.

Place to get 20D??? Cathay photo,Ms colour,John 3:16... still got few others.
price is the best u ask personally and bargain down. plus of cos see which shop they served u best(i will recommend John 3:16 @ funan) u will get some advise and try out the cam, before making any decision.

Next wat assessories?
before we go into that.
wat type of things u are goin to shoot???
landscape,portraits,insects.... etc..
you will need to get "each" lens for its purpose. but of cos it will be the best u get the "best lens from canon" for yr purpose.(save u cost in long term from making loss in Buying and Selling)

It's a investment when getting a DSLR. lots of thing to get...
Storing it will need a dry box.
Cleaning equipment will need blower/paper/solution....
Carrying it around will need a gd bag.(spending so much on cam and save on bag) will need one to protect it from rain/minor shock.

i hope i had covered enough for the basics things that u ask.
No matter which system you choose(canon,nikon,minolta,olympus) there will be helpful ppl around to help you.
Think before u buy.

If you are really sure that you will not change camera in the next 5 years, then go for the 20D....or else go for either the D70 or 350D.....

Hi JediForce4ever,

Thanks for your advice. My apologies if I am wrong, but judging from what I have been trying to read on the forums, the feeling I get is that most people are looking to upgrade their system, dsepite have very good systems already! So I guess I cant be sure if I wont be upgrading the system despite getting the 20D. The only thing I am trying to do is to hopefully start off on a resonable platform system (to offset my lack of skill :) ), as well as to learn from my mistakes and from my friends.

Sorry to intrude...
I don't think the 20D, or any camera for that matter, serves to "offset lack of skill" :) The higher-end cameras are made in such a way that it is more convenient to operate, ergonomically sound and efficiency in use, for users who already know the functions they want (and use) in cameras. Well it may, or may not make a big diff. I started off with 350D, and found it easier to manipulate the 20D. Not so sure if I feel just at ease if I started off with a 20D.

Sigh, i thought I won't be upgrading after getting the 350D, then 20D, then...

20D =1.6x CMOS 8 mega 1/250 + 1/8000 flash syn ISO 50-3200
D70s = 1.5x CCD 6 mega 1/500 flash syn ISO 200-1600

Which one is better?

D70s = $600 USD (body)
20d = $1300 USD (body)

You decide.

..then...1DsMkII? :devil:

Ergonomics plays an important factor in choice. You mentioned that you were more comfortable using the 20D, so if I were you, and if I had the budget, I would go for the 20D. The important thing to note is, its just the beginning. You still would have to invest in many other items as jnet6 had mentioned earlier, most important being the lenses. No matter how advanced ur cam body may be, an inferior lens gives inferior results, today's current crop of high megapixel DSLRs would yield the best results when used with professional grade lenses (i.e.L lenses or their equivalents) so don't stinge when it comes to lenses. You got to factor this into your budget. Set aside some money for good lenses (say abt 2k odd, depending on your needs) so total investment would come to around 4-5k at least.
