Local stores offer about 30% lower.

Someone posted a price on 20D, don;t know how reliable it is

I suggest getting an equote from Cathay, MSColor and see what you get. Alternatively, go to these shops and ask. Compare with COMEX prices. Usually they'll at least match the pricing.

I think Alanphoto is the backer for Canon MS Color for Fuji and Cathay ? In that sense prices are 'supposingingly fixed' at Comex and freebies are dish out by their respective principal, so its unlikely you can get cheaper but maybe the offer with differ somewhat eg D20 w/o kit $2400+ and free 1G CF as compared to $2700+ and a host of freebies. However think Fuji S3pro has one of the most attractive buy.

Major advantages of Canon 20D over D70s

1) Magnesium Alloy Body - for Outstanding Durability
2) 9 point AF - faster focusing
3) 8.2 Megapixel CMOS Sensor w/ DIGIC II Image Processor - high resolution for cropping
4) 5 fps - for capturing fast actions and sports
5) Batter Grip, BG-E3 - additional batteries, better hand holding
6) Mirror Lock-up via Custom function - minimise camera shake esp for Macro or Night photography

Major advantages of D70s over 20D

1) Half the price of 20D
2) Solid 18-70mm kit lens
3) Flash X-sync speed of 1/500
4) 2" LCD monitor
5) Spot metering
6) Light weight
7) Focusing Screen - On-demand grid lines which helps in framing/composition

USM did a good comparison of both the cameras.
The faster focusing, 5fps, higher pixel counts, and usability at high ISO are more important to me than the rest...
Err... I think by placing the thread in Canon forum, you will get a biased comments loh :bsmilie:

Thank you USM,

Your comparison has been most helpful. Your offer to accompany me to the shops is most generous and appreciated.

Together with the helpful comments from the rest, I will be heading to Comex today to 'test-drive' the cameras. WIll also be checking out the prices at the other shops mentioned to get a better price.

In fact, the suggestion of trying out a 2nd hand body, but investing in the lens is a very good idea, one that I will seriously entertain!

This forum has been a great help and many thanks to all the great comments from you guys!

Hi! First of all, welcome to the photography world.

Given the fact that you have just started to buy photography equipment seriously, I would suggest that you do a bit of homework prior to the purchase.

First thing first, you are comparing the Nikon D70s vs Canon 20D - an entry level camera vs a semi-pro, so it's not a good comparsion.

COMEX is selling the 20D with kit lens for $2,969, with FREE Battery Grip (BG-E3) + Lens Book. I believe that you can get better price at some of the store, like Alan Photo, MS Color or TK Photo, you don't have to buy at COMEX. If you ever need help to buy the body, do feel free to contact me, I can accompany you to buy if I am free on that day.

Back to your comparison, based on features and functionalities of the 2, you have to decide for yourself which one suits your needs and budget.

I also like the fact that D70s dun hv the Crop factor on digital cameras leh.. can use back the SLR lens without the crop factor consideration.. but too bad I onli hv canon lens

NOPE - ALL Nikon DSLRs, including the D1/D2 series have a FOV factor of 1.5x.
For the D70, the 18-70 lens becomes 27-105 in film terms.
And that lens, just like Canon EF-S lenses, cannot be used with FOV 1.0x DSLRs (which Nikon does not have) or Nikon film cameras.

Canon 20D 350D 300D 10D D60 D30 - FOV Factor of 1.6x
Canon 1D 1DMkII - FOV factor of 1.3x
Canon 1Ds 1DsMkII 5D - No FOV factor.

oops.. sorri.. my fren told me his D70s is a full frame... will check wif him again.
but then, he told me that only D70s has been upgraded frm D70 without the crop factor.. the D70 has a 1.5x factor, can anyone verify one this? thanks

To date, Nikon has NO FULL FRAME DSLR.

Dude! Your friend must be on weed and you must be on crack!!!
There is NO FULL FRAME sensor DSLR from Nikon yet...

You know .. some people .. like your friend .. like to brag. Either he is ignorant or just trying to brag to you cos he knows that you don't know (that no Nikon has a FF sensor). D70s upgraded frm D70 without the crop factor, huh !!??!! Now you know. All Nikon DSLRs have 23.7 or 23.8mm wide sensor which is a FOV factor of 1.52x.

I have friends like that too - boast about what they have and give wrong facts - often they think I don't know but I do - usually I don't correct them - relationship sometimes more important. But of course, sometimes, they get very irritating and then I lose it!

Your friend needs to do to his homework better. Unless he managed to get Nikon to produce for him a D70 Special

I think your friend must be dreaming lah...:bsmilie:

For me I will just go with Canon, simply because of the sensor noise. I have seen a D2X having unacceptable noise at ISO 1600, while the 20D is still very clean. If can afford it, and don't intend to change your camera so soon, go with a magnisium body.

Try both cameras at the shop, and let your own eyes be the judge. Please use also similar quality lens, otherwise comparison and feel will be vastly different.

Yep....the 20D is a Great camera.....just got mine from TCW....super....

hi dnd8008, i was in your shoes a couple mths back.

Frankly, i think the d70 is a very capable camera for its price.

-Good handling,
-decent kit lens,
-good write speed
-feels solid.
-AF is rather decent.

There has been comparsion of the good ISO performance of 20d compared to d70. I dun think its really an issue because you will not need the high ISO at all. Anything below ISO 800 is decent on both cameras

What i dun like is the small viewfinder. You need to shift your eyes around abit to see the picture entirely. THAT is very uncomfortable for me.

I wouldn't buy from comex if i were you; i'll picked a second hand one off buy and sell for about 1.1-1.2k.

20d is a very capable camera but it will cost u a bit more. What i like about 20d is, well, the slightly larger viewfinder( by 2mm, but the need to shift ur eye to view the whole frame is no longer there).

I keep mentioning the viewfinder because its a point seldom mentioned. There are a lot of comparison between high ISO, fps, megapixel etc etc..but frankly, both of them are good. When it gets down to shooting, what matters is that u are comfortable with ur equipment. They will both turn out good picture if u know how to use it.

Alternatively, why dun you consider konica minolta 7D? I think its a really cool piece of equipment? and the viewfinder is really huge at 25mm.

hehe, someone so picky on noise.. ;p

man!! the expensive always the best
