[ Camera ] All about the OLYMPUS PEN Lite E-PL5

Hi fellow e-pl5 users, what tripod do u guys usually use for travel?

I use both a tabletop Manfrotto MTT2-P02 folding tripod for super portability or a Sirui P-Series Monopod (with tripod base) to keep the load low.

Hi guys. Thanks for your quite sharing. Did a bit of research on the pricing and ended up getting vanguard nivelo 214wh from slr revolution. It's pretty light at 0.73kg. Let me play around and let u guys know if its a decent buy.

Do share some pictures as well, it's always good to have alternatives.

Hey guys..wanna check with you all one thing..when you power off the E-PL5..is there like a mechanical sound coming from it? I took out the lens and I realised when powering off..the sensor moves..wonder if that is the auto sensor cleaning like on DSLR..just that I can't find that function on the Menu..

That's SSWF supersonic wave filter I would think in action.

The SSWF is activated on start up, not shut down. Shut down is usually for IS mechanism.

Some of these weird IS mechanism behaviours can be resolved by the latest firmware. Shoot a video (close up with sound, use your smartphone) and post it here for us to gauge if it is normal. Some photographers who have never used IS tech gets a little worried when the IS mechanism is active.

No worries. It is normal behaviour as what the bros shared.

Extracted from the Olympus website - E-PL5 &gt Frequently Asked Questions

"When the camera is powered down, slight vibration and noise occur as the Image Stabilizer motor resets the image sensor to its default position. The camera takes this action when shooting with the Image Stabilizer function set to I.S. 1, I.S. 2 or I.S. 3. In these modes, the camera moves the sensor during shooting in order to counter the effects of camera shake. When the power is turned off, the camera moves the sensor back into the default position."

When Image Stabilizer is set to Off, the sensor does not move during shooting and so does not need to be reset. However, if shooting with a zoom lens, some noise may still be heard when the camera is powered off as the lens resets its focus to infinity.

If both Image Stabilizer and Reset Lens are set to Off, the camera will power down in silence."

Hi Vicky, I'm a newbie too, offering my 2shots worth. For the other mode, u'll need to adjust the shutter speed and aperture by pressing up on the scroll wheel. And while adjusting, check the lighting meter(the scale on the bottom screen that shows a range from + to - meter.). That will also u to adjust the lighting exposure. Now, tune under u see the desirable color on your screen.

Also, ur photo doesn't look that sharp, maybe tr focal length of ur auto stabilizer is set wrongly. I encounter the same issue with mine.

It looks like your shot is underexposed...likely in other modes other than iauto is due to you have turned the exposure too low.
It would be best if you can share your exif data, meaning, mode, F number, speed, ISO, exposure bias, etc information of the 2nd shot so we can help you further.

To use the other modes like A and S and certainly M..you need to know abit about photography to get the right exposure..but not to fear they are pretty easy to learn..note I say easy to learn and not easy to master!

I'm coming from DSLR but I use my E-PL5 a little different..on my DSLR I'm almost 70% on Manual mode but on this little monster..I'm never off A or Aperture mode..mainly because because of the lack of dials for me to adjust quickly on the fly..

My advice is go read up a little on how Aperture works in photography..then u can use mostly A mode..set the ISO to auto and limit at 3200..from there you should have some pretty good results that will keep you interested in upgrading your skills..and be careful of the exposure compensation value whilst fidgeting to change aperture!

I love my E-PL5..coupled with the 17mm f1.8 lens..the results are amazing!

I got the Epl5 brand new with the 14-42 kit lens, spare bat and 2x8GB cards for less than sg$800. I have been using the Ep1, Ep2, Epm2 and now the Epl55. I still have all the cameras except the Ep1. I really had to get the Epl5 because of the forward facing screen which flips the image to a mirror like behaviour. I am using some remote wifi trigger mechanism so I can now use the Epl5 from any direction and watch the screen to see whats being captured, then shoot. The Ep5 does have android support for remote view/trigger but for now I think the forward selfie style screen is the next best thing. I mainly use the Oly's for GLAMOUR and NUDE. Some samples can be found on this Flickr stream ....which is a restricted stream (female nudity) so please don't click if you might be offended.

Which wifi remote trigger are you using?

Which wifi remote trigger are you using?

It cost less than $40. Got it from Alan Photo Funan Center level 2.
Consist of
- receiver to attach to the cam, via micro usb cable
- trigger in your hand
It works with trigger pointing in any direction, and the trigger has two pressures, first focus, full shoot.
GREEEAAATTT stuff. works beautifully.

FL36 worth it , VF3 nope as the image quality in VF3 isn't worth it in my humble opinion. I will rather spend a bit more on VF2 whose price confirm will drop a lot when VF4 is released
