[ Camera ] All about the OLYMPUS PEN Lite E-PL5

Hi everyone. I may be new to the forum but I have been quite a lurker ard here and finally gotten myself a e-pl 5 on adorama after gg thru all the discussion.

I'll like to ask if it's necessary for me to purchase a dry box/cabinet to store the lens and body? i was using a pns camera (canon G10) previously and finally upgrading myself to the mirrorless platform. I am not a regular user of the camera and only used on travel occasions. In fact, my sole purpose of upgrade is for my upcoming guangzhou trip in may and then Scandinivia in June

if you intend to slowly invest in more lenses or even camera, my advice is to get a dry cabinet.

It can last you many years and will be worth it cost in preventing any fungus to your beloved lens.

thanks ayuready. Maybe i should start slow with a 20L dry box and silica gel and see how i go from there.

anyway, i bought mine at USD 599 from adorama and comes with a mini messenger bag, 16GB card, cleaning kit. I'll post up the products for everyone's viewing pleasure when it arrive tmr. cant wait though

i did free ground shipping to hopshopgo and ship from there. after that it's USD77.82 inc. of tax. parcel weight was 6kg from adorama which was repacked into 3.5kg by hopshopgo @ USD7.00

Watch this youtube video. comparision of Sony DSLR vs Panny G3. Important thing here is to see how the G3( and all other lumix G cams) AF during video. Panny has it done right. very nice and slow without sudden shifts. If you want to have immediate refocus during video, just press the shutter button. But most videographers would use MF instead as AF cannot be fully trusted during video. Just that Panny gets it right most of the time. IMHO, better than Oly even.

If I use AF during video recording, my lens (17mm f2.8) is loud when focusing therefore video captured all these noise.... is this something I need to live with or is there some settings that can be done? Thanks

Its the lens..For oly lenses, you need to use those with the MSC designation.. Meaning Movie and Stills Compatible = almost silent af during video.. The 17/2.8 was first bundled with the E-P1 and is "old" tech.
Solution?
- New oly 17/1.8 (expensive !)
- Panasonic Leica 25/1.4 (just as expensive)
- Sigma 19/2.8 (Cheap, good, silent during video
- or use any of the newer kit lenses, e.g. oly 14-42 Mk II/MkII R or panny 14-42 / 14-42 PZ/ 14-42 Mk II

or Manual focus.. : )

Thanks for the informative reply! I was looking at your recommended oly 17/1.8 but the pricing is a little too high for me to justify..

Hi all, i have been lurking in this thread for some time before taking the plunge to get myself an E-PL5 from Adorama. Thanks to the great tips from the bros and sis here, I think i got myself a good deal.

From now until April 20 2013, E-PL5 is selling for US$549 (i have seen this on Adorama, B&H, and Amazon). Adorama has a special promo that includes their kit, at exactly the same price.

At first I was a bit skeptical, as their kits usually cost a few dollars more, but after comparing both the Adorama kit and the Camera item itself, the only diff is the camera cap and lens caps (which they just forgot to add into the list. all caps were provided).

I just received the shipment yesterday, and everything was included and working great!

Total damage was SGD $822, including Shipping and GST.

I opted for Adorama's shipping service via UPS, so if you use a forwarding service it can be slightly cheaper, but will take longer.

Cheers, and hope this helps!

wow great deal...! i think that's the lowest price yet...! seems that olympus slashed the pricing of the E-PL5... the body only version costs USD499 only...!

I just got mine this evening from adorama too!

Got a black EPL5. Very happy with it. I like that I can do self protraits now :-)
And although I got the BLS5, I realized that it also takes the BLS1 altho Oly website says it is incompatible.

Ohhh..I love the permanent smaller AF box. Great!

Hello! I am a newbie to mirrorless but took the leap of faith and got a white epl5 from adorama. (best buy of the year so far!). Paid around 800 with UPS and gst.

I've been playing around with the settings and today, I was trying to get a photo where the background is blurred, so I went to the mode to set my aperture manually. However the face-detect function is still on, so when I focus on the cake in front of people, I can't get the background to be blurred because my cam still focuses on people's faces.

What should I do? What am I doing wrong?

Secondly, I realise that people's faces are really red at the 'candle' mode, what should I change?

Thank you so much!

Congrats on your new camera & welcome to CS!

You can try turning off face detection and put AF box into single spot where you want candle to appear, set your aperture to largest number, put your focal length to furthest end (e.g, 42mm is if you using 14-42 kit). the closer your lens is to cake/candle the blurrer the background will be. Scene mode (I think) has not much control, so you can't change, PASM mode will be able to change settings.

A few more resources fyi

Dear Wong, thank you for the kind advice

Oh my tian, i cannot believe this is my next post. Someone at home drop my baby on the floor. Cracked screen but the lcd is working and touch-screen function is working. I am depressed. Anyone knows a good reliable place to fix it? I will head down to the service centre tomorrow to check the price.

heartbroken. :(

It is best to bring it down to OSC (Olympus Service Center) because other than fixing the obviously broken stuff, they can run a diagnostic to see if there are any other thing in there that might have been damaged. Sorry to hear this happening. It should not be too much of a drama.

Hi fellow e-pl5 users, what tripod do u guys usually use for travel?
