[ Camera ] All about the OLYMPUS PEN Lite E-PL5

Actually, since you are photography newbie, I would strongly recommend sticking to what you have - kit lens. And explore what the focal lengths really mean by using it, and aperture, speed, exposure, etc... There's a reason for kit lens, it covers the most common angle a user will need, from wide angle to a little bit more tele, so it's very versatile. While it is not fast or bright (by that I don't mean autofocus speed but rather how much light this lens can gather), using right technique, it can still be very useable lens.

There are many guides on the newbie section to help you as well.

SLR magic lens is a manual lens, meaning no autofocus, and that can be difficult for newbies to handle, so is the Samyang 7.5mm fisheye, and it's a specialty lens. It's extremely wide, and not easy to use, and will have distortions especially at the sides. You can use it as an ultra wide angle lens, but your corners will be distorted.

And we have a sunrise shoot this sunday at gardens by the bay, do join us if you are very keen to learn, there's a lot in this camera we can cover that too

Lastly, have fun shooting with it :)

Nice links there. I am also quite newbie-ish :)

Is the 35mm slr magic lens similar to the China fujian 35mm cctv lens? I have the China variant and it gives a nice swirly kind of bokeh for the out-of-focus bits. Anyway, manual focus on the epl5 is quite easy if you use the filter trick for "focus peaking".

@wonglp: any poison to share for the samyang? :))

Yes, afaik, slr magic lens and the fujia lens is same, at least from what I see and experience on the 25/1.4. It's just rebranding, and some colored rings to "beautify" it, charge it like 3 x more, not bad an idea:)

Here's a set on my flickr for samyang 7.5mm FE lens

& one that's searched on flickr

I would prefer using VF2 (instead of VF3/LCD screen) for manual focus, helps a lot.

Anyone using screen protector on the EPL-5. My regular Martin Fields does not have one customised for EPL-5. CUrrently using one bought from Ebay Germany, but it gets scratchs quite easily.

yes... i simply take my camera to SLS e-power technologies... ask them to paste for me.... they can paste screen protector on ANYTHING... cos they simply measure the dimensions and then paste accordingly... it costs me $6 only...

simple... that's because GST already paid for by borderlinx... and the amount of $$$ u paid to borderlinx covers the GST...

omg you are right. I have always thought that's the export tax from USA.

if you use Borderlinx, Amazon will collect sales tax, because Borderlinx is located in Ohio, which collect tax for internet purchase. However, no tax issue with Comgateway, because it's in Oregon.

Do you guys prefer the JnK skin or Aki Asahi? Jnk is apparently made of real leather? Looking to deck out my silver epl5 ;p

i like the jnk skin :)

There's a thread by microcosm with regards to your question about getting another lens. Sorry don't think I can post links yet. But do a search "Threads on "what lens should I buy"... and the likes... just sharing my own thoughts."
Hopefully it can help you =)

I'm new as well...many of the bros here have advised me to stick with the kit lens and play around with it first. I however got lured into buying the lumix 14mm f2.5 after reading reviews on it =p

is the 15mm olympus lens body cap good? was thinking of getting it

yeah feels like real leather but it seems like sticker to me. black on silver epl5

its good when you just wanna quickly snap a photo when using a slim body cap since it protects itself and its super light. if not, a pancake will do fine.

Anyone has any 3rd party battery to recommend?

Finally got my hands on the E-PL5 after selling off my whole Nikon setup.
Brought it to office the next day to update the firmware and a few test shots...couldn't stop myself from salivating....passed to my colleagues and they were wowed by the touch-focus-release-shutter-feature.
Enjoying every bit of my PL 20mm and Oly 45mm.

Glad that I dun have to lug the full weight of my ex-Nikon anymore. :)
