Cactus V5 Flash Triggers Mini Review (w/ pictures)

Haha...are u using it bro?

I'm not, thought of doing so but it's just to expensive to ditch away my current triggers for this. Will be making a big loss if I do. So I guess I just have to stick to the current ones. However, my brother did purchase a set of 4 V5 transceivers. Get to test it for a while, my first initial reaction was it is really huge!!!

props to fedex. mine was shipped in just 3 days! :)

woah, these things are huge.

Thanks guys!

It should be able to fire up studio lights. AFAIK. Where is your studio, I don't mind trying my triggers with your lights. Hehe!

It's just a small home studio. Bit far away to let you test.
Hehe.. I've got my V5s.. few days ago. Just tested with the 580EXs.

Yet to test on the studio lightings.

Hi,

I have not been into flash photography so pardon my ignorant qns. I am interested in setting up multi flashes with Wireless triggering. Would the V5 work with different brands of flash and still support E-TTL II Metering to my Canon 5D MKII ?

Equipment as follows -
Camera : Canon 5D MKII
Flash : Canon Speedlite 580EX, Minolta 5400HS, Olympus FL-14

Would the V5 (or any wireless triggers for that matter) work ?

thanks

The v5s doesn't support any form of TTL metering, the one I know is from pocket wizard, even if you do get pocket wizards, the only one that will receive the metering info will be the Canon, basically because Canon flash understands Canon camera language, whereas your Minolta and Olympus don't,anyway, the contact pins for TTL info is different

The only triggers that allow wireless E-TTL are the Pocketwizards or pixel knight.

What the v5s provide is full manual flash support, meaning u need to adjust all the flash power manually before shooting. And above other triggers the V5s have been reviewed to be reliable and long distanced performers in a easy to use package. At a fraction of the cost of a pocketwizard. I believe as it stands the cost of 1 pocket wizard nets you 7 V5s.

Many thanks for your prompt help. Do you know if Pockwizard will be able to support E-TTL on my non-Canon Flashes when "triggered" from the Canon 5D MKII ? I am assuming on the Canon 580EX there's no issues.

As I already said, only Canon flashes or 3rd party flashes made for Canon will support E-TTL, whereas your Minolta and Olympus will not, in fact, I'm not even sure if your Minolta hot shoe is the standard type or the one that is currently found on Sony cameras

Cactus V5 is compatible to both Canon and Nikon flashes. Does it mean that i can use the same unit on both Canon and Nikon bodies? Cos I do not see "For Canon" or "For Nikon". Even pocketwizard can't do that right?

yup you can use the same unit for canon or nikon bodies.

Guys,
I managed to try the Zonal Triggering System. I find it is useful because..

1. can test the main and side lights individually
2. isolate kicker lights immediately if you don't need it...

i tried the Zonal Trigger System during a indoor studio shoot. Have you tried it? ;)

Are you talking about the multi channel triggering? Yup it’s awesome because it lets you isolate lights for testing.

Yes brah!! awesome man!!

Just curious, since V4 is not compatible w V5, what are the chances that V6 will not be compatible with V5? Thks

Possible, but no one can give you definite answer.

Yah I understand..

Just thinking V4 was old 433Mz but since V5 is 2.4GHz, which is kinda the 'standard' signal for these radio triggers, then it probably shouldnt change much rite..lol

what you guys using to store your v5s. Any small bag in particular before u put in your normal cam bag?
