hi all, me looking to buy a reg and kinda eyeing the mares v16 proton xl, any comments? also thinking of considering scuba pro or oceanic...any comments from the old birds here? what would be a goog euivalent (in terms of price and performance) to the mares? thanks for your advice in advance.

Like what alot of ppl have already said, your breathing is impt. Unless u are going for a rebreather, your choice of a regular reg is not really going to help much in this aspect. I feel your choice of BC will matter more especially if you are taking macro. U will probably want to take on more weights than necessary (i normally use only 1-2 pieces but will take up to 6) to:-
1) go down fast to beat the crowd and 2) to be stable when taking your pic.,
and so you need a hardy BC to tahan all the additional weights. Your BC will also need sufficient 'lift' to bring you up easily when you are done. U might also want to consider a back-flotation BC where the open front will enable you to minimise the space between your subject matter and your lens. On the overweighing, pls try it gradually and only when you are comfortable with your buoyancy. Negative fins help too. If it's any help to you, I am also a devout Scubapro fan :bsmilie:

And yeah, nice avatar!

thanks guys for the advice, seems like only experience here is with the highly regarded scubapro stuff....

ok ok enuf abt the avatar already! :bsmilie:

i stick to my poseidon.. side exhaust bubbles are dispersed as they leave the reg

i use apeks tx50, a few of us use that as well. i like it becos you can turn whichever way and you can breathe easily. in my own opinion, scubapro tends to "leak" if you face upwards (when taking sunbursts, looking at your divers descending, e.g.)

It does? For me it usually only leaks when I am upside down. :dunno:

and since this is a photography forum, the higher powers hv decided that non-photography specific questions are OBs, but as for how to do u/w photography w/o reg + bc +tank + mask + fin still baffles me.

So, the latter equipment are all not u/w photography related and hence i think your post will be deleted shortly. but believe me, we are all nice people here, or at least those of us occupying the hierarchy basement.....

I am sure those high up in hierarchy will allow this discussion in this thread. Afterall this is the no (little) holds bar, anything (almost) goes place for all our contribution (nonsense).

this is the bubbling blabber thread, all posts are allowed, as per our stated guidelines, as long as not inviting legal issues, commercial posting, or wilfully and deliberately insinuating others. if not, siaoon's post of the revoluntionary diving will be the first to go

i'm so going to get killed for this but not true. it seems u can OT on a OT thread (bubbling blabber) hahahhaa!!! :bsmilie: :bsmilie: so it does baffle me what is allowed and what is not...

beivied said:
kthan, people's nice to people who are nice.. right?

wrong. cuz i think, no need to be conditional. nice means nice. why the need to be nice only to those who are nice to u... :dunno:

and beivied i come in peace  and shall run to hide shivering... don't kill me.. i'm only ss (errr happy belated birthday. u must be only 14!! )

what's so good about side exhaust bubbles dispersing as they leave reg??

and what's leaking reg or bc?

smaller bubbles less scary lor hehee

leaking as in water seeping in.

water seep in cos you never service your reg, or the diaphram is worn out already, time to change.

Well, we are talking about bubbles and we are also blabbering. So I guess we are not that OT. ;)

Hence your forum name? :bsmilie:

I have see someone uses ankle weight, like those sell in sport shops for running. Guess he is not there to enjoy the swim around.

Landing on coral will definately do some damage and a big no no :nono: , so do consider the situation you use this and where you land.

6 weights to keep down? i don't use any weights one leh. 1 more im already sinking like a rock liao

but i really prefer to float above the corals/rocks/hydroids/bunch of urchin and try to get the shot..

Yeah, that's why your BC's got to have sufficient lift too (for all the excessive weight you are carrying) and buoyancy's gotta be good. Last thing you want is to leave a trail of destruction behind...

Anyone getting the Aqualung dual hose reg?
Very cool.
