Breakdown on North-South MRT Line

It was reported that Lui TuckmYew was disappointed. 4 persons died when a rsn ship hit a container ship . Lui was chief of navy then. Tony tan said it was an honest mistake! And lui moved up. Anyone disapponinted? So the MRT incident is just a peanut....

saw this on facebook. :bsmilie:

It is a profit opportunity. The gahment will fine smrt, smrt will raise prices to get back the fine.

The penalty should be lowering of prices. Why should the gahment get paid for our inconvenience.

This might be a blessing in disguise for MRT riders in the north like me. Maybe they will solidify and bring forward plans for the Thomson line. As it is today, I can't wait to get off the NSL at Bishan and switch to the CCL whenever I can, even if it meant a longer ride.

frankly, thomson line is TAKING ages to announce.... LTA is really taking its own sweet time in building MRT.

they say they are launching new MRT every year from now but all they did was to launch previously announced line in parts... Frankly, all they are building now is Downtown line.....

I really think LTA is a mess.... the road projects they come up with.

NSE expressway ramp in/out is terrible too....

Agreed.
For the period of 1 Dec 2010 to 31 May 2011 smrt was fined a grand total of SGD$300/- only.

Wow!!! Fined 300!!!!! So mmuuuuccchhh ah!!!! WAAAAAH!!!!

What crap. $300 out of $160 million profit? Fine them $3 million more like it.

Left pocket to right. The root of the problem lies deeper.

From LTA website, if you care to agree:

SMRT Fined $200,000 for Bishan Depot Security Breach

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has fined SMRT $200,000 under the Rapid Transit Systems (RTS) Act for lapses relating to the security breach at Bishan MRT depot on 17 August 2011. This security lapse is similar in nature to an earlier incident at Changi depot in May 2010 for which SMRT was fined $50,000.

2. LTA's investigations found that SMRT had failed to exercise the due diligence and vigilance expected of a public transport operator, by failing to regularly inspect, continuously maintain and repair its operating facilities. SMRT also failed to adequately carry out their responsibility to oversee the day-to-day security operations at its depots, and implement fully the security measures recommended by the Public Transport Security Committee (PTSC) after the Changi depot incident last year.

3. Due to its negligence, SMRT had failed to effectively guard against unauthorised intrusions. It also failed to detect, in a timely manner, the security breach at its Bishan MRT depot and the graffiti on one of its MRT trains on 17 August 2011. As a result, SMRT had breached its obligations under the Rapid Transit System (RTS) Licence & Operating Agreement (LOA).

4. LTA will be closely tracking and auditing SMRT's performance, so that they adhere to the public transport security standards that have been set.

Donation of Fine to the Public Transport Fund

5. The fine collected will be donated to the Public Transport Fund to help needy families with transport fares.

Tell you what I like about the news photo in the Sunday Times today. LTY was checking out the mrt station alone - WITHOUT THE USUAL ENTOURAGE OF APPROXIMATELY 30 ANXIOUS + STRESSED PEOPLE that follow important persons around on their walkabouts. The entourage phenomenon is the same whether in public or private sector.

I am sorry. I DO NOT trust one party system bcos I trust that absolute power corrupts.

price hike and train breakdown just don't gel together.

Agree! Price keep on increasing but it doesnt match the situation

I think perhaps the law should lower the fines on individual since large corporation r only fined so little that they wont care. How about fine of one cent for chewing gum? :)

ooh..wooo...ooohh wooo..:)

Lets look at this realistically.

The MRT is over 24 years old, at some point in time any system will experience MORE breakdowns than normal even with the best possible maintenance practices in place.

You have more trains per day running at smaller intervals, than 24 years ago, more wear and tear.

So what is SMRT's Maintenance Window each day, less than 5 hours, so how can you realistically cover every KM of track in that time and do proper maintenance.

When I look at what is happening now, I think of s simple analogy which is well known in Maintenance call the BathTub Curve.

Outline:
Theory

The bathtub curve theory is more of an analogy than a theory, but it is often described in more theoretical terms. The rate of decay or failure with which engineered components occur is likened to the curve of the interior of a typical bathtub. In the earliest phase of a system's implementation, the rate of failure decreases sharply over time because any initial failures or problems are overcome with a solution. During the next phase, the bottom of the bathtub's curve, the failure rate becomes more constant over the course of time as the system's components are in relatively good shape. Toward the end of its life span, the curve goes back up sharply, like the wall of the bathtub, as failures occur at an increasing rate. This is similar to an old car that has one problem after another the older it gets.

Anticipation

The bathtub theory can be used by engineering firms and other companies to anticipate problems that may develop. Doing so can create the opportunity to anticipate such problems in advance and rapidity at which they will occur. This allows companies the opportunity to have ample staff and other resources on hand to attack problems proactively, as they occur or in advance of their occurrence. This can help eliminate additional costs in the long run. Scheduled maintenance at regular intervals will help eliminate unexpected maintenance issues.

Troubleshooting

Anticipating problems is only possible to an extent. Unexpected problems are likely to occur in the long run. If the bathtub curve theory holds correct though, these should occur at a fairly constant or at least a slower rate throughout the middle part of a system's life span. As problems arise, they have to be dealt with in a timely fashion so that additional problems do not begin to accumulate and snowball out of control. Having maintenance policies established to ensure timely completion of problems will keep this from occurring.

Replacement

At some point, the amount of money spent maintaining mechanical and other types of equipment will outweigh the cost of replacement. Plus, the number of problems that occur will do so at an increasing rate, making it difficult to engage in preventive and routine maintenance. This final curve of the bathtub represents the period in which companies must decide when and how much maintenance should continue versus engaging in full-scale replacement.

SMRT could well be entering the Replacement phase, given the age of the system. But they have already denied that age the contributing factor here. Another problem with the system is there is NO redundancy, you just cant switch off once section of line without causing problems to commuters.

The main cause of the present problems seems to be with the shoe that connects to the third rail. So this shoe is attached to the train carriage, if this gets out of alignment it can fall off and or cause damage to the third rail, which happened on Thursday, as section was damaged due to damaged shoes. The damaged shoes has been reported in all papers.

In this Replacement part of the Bath-Tub curve, more frequent breakdowns will be experienced. So the challenge now for SMRT is how to mitigate these breakdowns and dampen the effect, the answer will be very hard, because the window of maintenance is small for the tracks, as seen by today's shutdown of the line for 7 hours. Train maintenance can be stepped up by taking more trains out of service to do more thorough checks, but this could cause more delays at peak times.

So now becomes a vicious circle, not knowing when or where the next problem will happen and commuters have high expectations. When everything is going okay everyone is happy, but the slightest problem all HELL breaks loose, because the ordinary person, expects everything to work 100% all the time.

There can be no easy solution to the aging of the SMRT system. Some very difficult decisions will have to be made soon on how to keep Singapore's so called World Class Transport System from spiraling into a more chaotic journey for all commuters.

So will be interesting to see how SMRT does deal with this problem now.

Cheers ....

let's be realistic yeah, from a consumer point of view.

if SMRT wants to increase the train fare, they better be able to deliver the goods.

truth is, the current infrastructures are barely able to keep up with the ever-growing population.

more people = more trains needed = increase in frequency = increased in wear and tear = more breakdown

who is the ultimate culprit? you guys go figure.
