Bokeh - Using Nikon Lenses

Might I correct you on that point. Sorry to nitpick once again. A lens does not HAVE good bokeh. It HAS glass elements mounted in some arrangement onto a barrel.

I'M VERY SORRY:embrass:

actually ah, i'll try to remember tt ;)

much like how field of view is often confused with focal length

Test shot with Nikkor AiS 105mm f/2.5 without filter on D200 without focusing screen.

Some fringing in the specular highlights, hmm.

Hi,

Here is another shot.

Question,

How would you judge a bokeh to be of a nice one?

Cheers

hehehe... that's a tough one to answer, I think.
Probably it's the smoothness of the way that the OOF objects are rendered.
Some poor-performing lenses produce blocky background objects.

Some old lens designs with much inherent abberations can actually produce nicer bokeh. The DC lenses in Nikon actually allows control of degree of spherical aberrations, and when a little uncorrected can give rather pleasing oof backgrounds.

Without filter I can understand, without focusing screen?

AiS lens = manual focus on any possible Nikon body.

AiS lens without focusing screen => inaccurate focusing => bokeh also affected because the degree of OOF-ness is dependent on the relative distances between the focus plane and the elements in the image.

IMHO this also has poor bokeh.

how would you judge one to be good or a bad bokeh? would bokeh be of a personal taste or more of a standard thing like how we judge sharpness of a image.

I think it's more personal than quantitative. The pictures PreciousP had commented to have bad bokeh all share one thing in common. They have rather distracting backgrounds. Most people consider bokeh to be good when the colours in the background blend into a sort of cream if I'm not wrong. Specular highlights should also not be fringed nor have strong outlines. "Donut" bokeh where there are rings instead of circles are considered to be bad bokeh, along with very hexagonal (aperture blades are not rounded) rendition of OOF highlights.

Anyone, please correct me if I'm wrong. Trying to figure out too.

i take "good bokeh" to be creamy bokeh.

but under the right conditions, even ka na sai lens can produce good bokeh. not sure if one can force a "good" lens (reputed for producing:) good bokeh), produce bad bokeh.

sometimes, what is "bad" or "distracting" can be used as one of the elements in an image. to look like sparkly light balls. i remember some bro's cup of christmas bokeh :thumbsup:

For sake of discussion, the best is really to shoot these lenses under similar setups and situations and compare.

personal preference. some people put brand name psychological effect to bokeh. anyway my picture wasnt shot with nikon camera :bsmilie:
