Bought a Minolta 80-200mm f2.8 APO "G" lens (black model) from a ex-colleague. My first G lens and WOW  ! Even though this is the earlier non-HS (probably the first model released pre-1990), it's still very sharp and VF is very bright. This is also my first constant aperture lens and although I've always craved one, I never really thought of its implication ... it's really something   to zoom from 80mm to 200mm without your exposure metering changing or VF getting a bit dimmer. Just done test shots around the house of my daughter and cats ... colours are very natural, excellent contrast but need to be careful with vvvvery shallow DOF at f2.8, but sharp when focus is spot on. Oh, and what lovely bokeh! Indoor flash shots between 80-100mm with the 5600HS came out good.

Wished the tripod ring could be removed. No IF so front lens elem rotates on focusing. But length stays the same when zooming. Heavy but not unwieldy; I've actually been shooting all my test shots handheld  ---AS rocks! Funny bayonet mount hood that comes in 2 pieces - a bayonet mount ring and the bulk of the hood that screws onto the mount ring. 72mm filter size so not too big.

Looking to buy a Kenko Pro 300 1.4X or Tamron SP AF1.4X TC next ;p ---AF should still work at f4.

Hiee Bro....

Great lens you got there.... Funny about the hood...my hood is one piece....probabaly yours is separated..
Yes...by constructio the hood is two piece as its machined and not moulded one piece. Your's probably had glue separated...

Shoot shoot... really heavy lens..

rgds,
sulhan

You are the lucky one!! so enjoy the lens...

Wish my friend don't have to take one that he sent me back... so one more CS people will have the joy as well...

An indication of the age of the lens, I guess. Nothing a bit of superglue can't fix :bsmilie: .

Hahha...

the copy I have is about 20yrs old i think.....But optics wise...nothing of the lot of lens i have can surpass its optics....

Good for you! This is just the beginning, acquiring more G lenses in the future? ;p

One Black G spotted in Keh...

i bought my white APO g from there. be reminded that shipping will be about SGD 60 (UPS 2/3 day) + GST 5%... got to consdier that:) but other than that KEH is 100% reliable:) very good company. and good email support

Calling all owners of Minolta 80-200mm f2.8 APO "G" lens. Does AF work with a 2X TC (eg., Kenko Pro 300 2X or Tamron SP AF1.4X) at f5.6 in reasonable outdoor light? Or is it a case of MF only? I don't want to lose AF altogether if possible. Keh has a couple of (reasonably priced?) Kenko Pro 300 2X TCs (but no 1.4X versions).

It should work .....but just be careful for those TC's that have non recessed elements - might head bang with the 80-200 last elements..

Thanks. I think Kenko & Tamron are okay. Sigma and KM are the ones to avoid for this lens.

So, US$599 x 1.7 (conversion)= S$1018.3 x 1.05 (5%GST) =S$1069.2 + S$60 (delivery fee) = Total $1129.20

condition: "Excellent" 80-89% of the original condition. Shows moderate wear. May have small dings, pecks and slight finish wear. Glass may have some dust, but no marks.

Is this a good price?

well you can consider that KEH is VERY conservaive with their ratings. i bought a "bargain" 50mm 1.7 from them and it was in what i would consdier good conditoin. excellent would be Clubsnap "near mint" :). My 80-200 APO G was "like new" and really was SCARTCHLESS which is tough with that white paint...so the price is ok la. wun regret and even if sell off wun lose much (may even earn:))

Works fine...

I tested the 80-200 f2.8 APO G (black) and tamron SP 2x TC, it works fine...

Good enough lar..

If you need one and have the budget, then get it lor.. otherwise, then don't need to buy it.

Few things to consider when buying "G" lens is purely because of the weight... if you think 1.4kg is too heavy then don't even think about buying one as what is the point of getting it and sitting in dry cabi.

Good luck.
