Best walk around lens for Canon cropped body

What is your most used walk around lens for Canon cropped body

I vote 17-55 f/2.8 for best IQ and best walk-around lens (IMHO).

There is no right answer to this question as everyone will have opinions, reasons and preferences for their choice. All are valid as they are personal.

What's with all the recent outburst of polls these days?

You buy what you need, not base on people's recommendation. If you walk around shooting birds then your walkaround lens might be a white tele prime or a 100-400L. Period.

Seriously these polls are getting nowhere.

yes, agree with yrh0413, the walkabout depends on where you walkabout and what are you shooting.

I used 18-200mm kit lens in my walkabout at the Spore Zoo last year - fit the purpose perfectly. But for normal family or friend gathering, 17-55mm is the lens to use. When walkabout in scenic location, the 10-22mm is great. Thus, i voted all three in the poll. ;p

Agreed. There are just too many meaningless polls in this forum these days. Asking for one's favorite [insert category] lens is like asking for his favorite food.

Just treat it as harmless fun lah - coffeeshop banter :) Equipment talk has always been the easiest part of photography.

ha.? seems like only mi voting for tamron 17-50 non VC. :) picked it up recently and love it more than my 24-70 and 24-105 as a walk around lens.. being extremely light is quite a plus for mi cos need to carry it and walk around whole day. IQ is amazing. VC does not matter that much for shot focal length.

i'm looking for 15 85 as well but i can't find it.
but i'm using 10 22 as my walkabout now...

If u ok with going in to JB, you can get it below $800 brand new with 2 years canon Malaysia warranty.

Frankly this lens is overpriced in Singapore.

I dont understand why some people like to diss harmless fun. Did TS say he do this poll to find out what he want to buy?

People who own car like to discuss about each others' car, people who own bikes like to discuss about each others' bikes. People also discuss about each others' job without actually considering going into another person's industry.

Stop acting like a lao jiao pro and define what we can discuss. IMHO the poll is indeed quite pointless, as we get lenses for different purpose. I may use the 50 mm f1.8 for a purpose different from the next person. Even if the comment is specific to someone else's purpose for getting the lens, i learn from their feedback as well, it opens my eyes.

We do a lot of pointless things in life anyway. Octarine, you are replying to what you deem a pointless thread, you are doing something pointless also. You need to learn to stop talking high and mighty like you have some authority over newbies.

Just my 0.02. Cheers. :)

I hope you see how pointless this poll is ... different people have different preferences for very different reasons. Do you need handholding finding your own lens?

The arrogance of it.

LOL I am amused by some people. Take a chill pill and relax. This poll won't hurt your health, no matter how pointless it seems. You will die of high blood pressure getting yourself all annoyed and such over some harmless fun. Admit it, you do take a peep at other photographers' lenses when you see them on the streets. It is natural curiosity. If you ain't curious, you have no rights to stop people from being curious about what are the lenses used by others or preferred by others.

There are so many thngs in this world that harms others, eg. second-hand smoke, so be thankful such fun is harmless.

Peace out.

Best reply to this thread and fully support :)

Haha, thanks bros, I already had my sigma 17-50 before this poll and just to see which are the lens normally people would use. Though the 17-55 is the lens voted by so many people, I am definitely not going to sell my lens.

My bad on the poll as it is not comprehensive enough, + a double poll.. didnt have much time to consoildate.. after creating the thread.

Not really offended by the "lao jiao".. he can say what he want, after all this is the internet..

Voted for Canon 18-200mm F3.5-5.6 IS. ;)
Wanted to vote for Canon EF-S 18-135 IS but it is not listed as an option. :(

This is kind of a One-Size-Fits-All lens for me.
Landscape, Portrait, Street, Product, Macro .. you call the shots!

I not sure what to vote for, haha. All the 3 lenses I owned, have their fair share of usage.

But I do notice that I either shoot ultra wide or telezoom when on the streets. I use the 17-55 mainly for portrait and low light situation.

I am also looking to vote for 15-85. Its one lens that i can use for any kind of pictures during my oversea travel trip. It give good IQ too with compact size and weight.

Actually I guess is the recent flurry of polls, some of which overlap a lot with one another, that ticked off some people here.

I believe it started out with the thread on which lens one regretted buying, where I got chided for listing my 70-200 f/4L. I was just trying to caution others against buying a lens based purely on reviews. Then came more polls on which lens brought the most joy, where people argued over their favorites. And now the best walkabout lens for crop sensor. No offense to the TS, but this is playing with fire (or troll bait, if you know what I mean) in some sense, even though many of us don't see it as such.

To answer your poll question seriously: I have been using the 15-85 for a long time. It is a great lens for its size and weight, although it is rather overpriced new. But for the best overall performance plus versatility including low light, I vote for 17-55 f/2.8. I just wish its bokeh is smoother, and have less mechanical issues such as failing IS motors.

None in the poll. My walkabout lens is Carl Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 prime.
