best travel lens for FX body

Very soon this thread will see All focal range listed...lol

Every photographer is unique in their own way and as we all are, unique in photography style, build and age.

However, if we go through all the focal range stated, one would realise it all revolves around, 24, 35, 50 and 85 and for UWA lovers like myself, include ranges like 14mm and 16mm. There will be those who will prefer prime lens and others opting for zoom lens.

But, if we turn the table around and say, if we could carry only one FX body and One lens to bring along on a general holiday trip with our family, which lens would you bring?

Yah if read TS post, he/she is prepared to carry 24-70mm & 50mm,which differs very much in weight, price, etc thats why the comments are also so varied..lol

For myself I'll carry nothing heavier than D600 & 50mm f1.8 or 35mmf2D, 80% consideration is weight..

Hi all, I have always wondered with topic like this. What do you do with those, say prime lenses or other lenses that you may have? When do you use them? Only at "home" and not abroad? You can only take so much pictures of The Marina Bay Sands etc.

I still wonder why people ask questions like that at all. :) What's the point of asking others which equipment to buy for yourself?

The benefit of an interchangeable lens system is to have the right lens at the right time. You use the lenses when you need that type of lens. If you are too limited in your vision not to see how your gear can be used regularly, I suggest selling your gear and picking up another hobby, like knitting.

Simple. I take photos for FUN, with whatever other lens I may have, to achieve whatever creative, self indulging 'vision' I may have..:)
BUT when I go abroad, UNLESS its a photo trip, my priority is NOT tontake the best picture of whatever scene I came across.

Of course I'll still like to, NOT a need to, take fairly gd photos as memento.. Else I use camera phone..

Priority is to 'take in' the place, not take photos, but thats just me..:)
And for myself, anything heavier than 50mmf1.8 is a burden to me..

Thinking of travelling with a 16mm. A bit too arty farty.

The New Sigma 35mm is a great travel lens...

Not wide enough for landscape.

lol, I'm not recommending the Siggy but of course it's wide enough. You can shoot great landscaped at 70mm and 105mm and of course at 35mm too. It totally depends on your composition like with any other kind of photography.

U can shoot landscapes with 70mm, 105mm or even 200mm.. It depends on the perspective which u want to capture in your landscape..

Having said that, i just bought a Sigma 35mm myself and it will definitely be in Korea next mth together with my 14-24.. :)

I used to have an 18-200 on my dx body but usually brought primes along since I found the image quality a bit lacking. I used the zoom less and less even when I traveled. I moved to an FX body this year and was using primes most of the time. However I found carrying 3-4 lenses around proved to be inconvenient. It was a burden to carry around and if you have 3 lenses on your bag and one on your camera, those are 3 extra lenses to worry about. That's a lot of money's worth in a single bag.

I was reading a lot of great reviews on the old 28-105 f3.5-4.5 and finally decided to buy one. I must say despite me expecting a lot due to the reviews, I was still amazed. It's an amazing piece of glass. The focal range is just right, it is affordable and the image that comes out of that thing is just phenomenal considering the S$250 price tag.

i'll be heading to Macau and HK with a 16-35mm f4 and a 50mm f1.8
tripod, sb400 on a FX camera

A very useful & relatively lightweight combo on FX.

"Best lens for FX"...I would say Nikkor 24-85 f3.5-4.5 VR. There's a reason y they name this lens the 'kit lens'. Coz it's really a 'kit' - versatile 24-85mm focal range. If u need any wider than 24mm, a Sigma 12-24mm HSM II will do. Any more telephoto than 85mm, a Nikkor 70-300mm VR will do. Need to shoot in low light? Take along a Nikkor 50mm f1.8D lens.

If the above combination doesn't fit requirements, ditch the D600/D800 in your hand. Bring along a film SLR instead. The inability to preview pictures whilst traveling makes it all the more fun, exciting and challenging to travel and shoot photos. :)

For weight, I think it is pointless to carry a UWA like 14-24mm when a 10-18mm on NEX6 can do almost the same thing. And you don't have to change lens travelling. + you have a light combo to carry out on short trips out of hotels, etc.

I'd just bring a 24mm or 28mm/f2.8, the 50/1.8 and perhaps a 85/1.8

Wide/Normal/short-tele

Great minds... I recently lugged along to Europe exactly that 4-pc lens-combo suggested except for the 50mm f1.8 - had a 35mm f1.8 instead coz still using my unfailing D90! The 24-85mm (landscape/faces) and the 12-24mm (landscape/architecture) came in most handy while the other 2 tended to be left behind in the hotel room to reduce weight/bulk. No regrets and still not ready to upgrade to FX yet...
