When you are traveling the lighter the better this is a very small, compact and fast lens from Nikon full frame standard zoom range which is adequate for most of your daily needs. The 24-70mm f2.8 is better a bit bulky and heavy for use as a travel lens. It's will be okay if you don't have many other things to carry.

Also good when capturing video clips with the very smooth focus ring. I am also happy with the result when reversing the lens for macrophotography.

Oops.! sorry everyone i was wrong on my previous post as i have 2 units which are D700 with 24-120 kit and D7000 with 18-105.
What I'm supposed to post is my D700 with 50mm 1.8AIS and 24-120 kit lens.
