Canon is well-known for not having good ergonomics... their system of dial plus button presses have always been criticised... It's only belatedly on the 7D that they have adopted the systems that KM first implemented and inherited by Sony and then also adopted by Nikon. It's called dual thumb dials with dedicated buttons for most exposure elements... I've tried using a Canon 1Ds, 1D, 1DmkII, 1DmkIII, 5D, 5DmkII and they all are pretty bad in terms of usability... once you have used either a Sony or Nikon or Pentax system, you will have difficulty trying to use a Canon cos it takes a lot of fiddling to find out how to change any settings... it's that bad... you've got to try it... I noticed that most people new to Sony or KM can pick up the camera and use it after about 10min... I have passed my cameras (7D & A-900) to my students who are complete newbies and they can figure out how to use it.... whereas I have been shooting with DSLRs for some time now and I just can't figure out the Canons... I had to ask the owner for help for almost everything... including simple things like changing ISO, change focus mode, focus point, switch from AF to MF, review and deleting, rotating photos, etc... pretty horrendous experience for me... plus there's a lot of menu diving...
On the contrary i heard Canon has the easiest/best ergo. This one is more of personal inclination than anything else.
A little about how i started DSLR. Back in '04, i went to Best Denki at Taka, there were 3 booths, Canon, Nikon & Oly. Went to try the 20D, was able to operate in 3mins. Went to Nikon booth, tried the D70, cudn't fig out how to use it in more than 10mins. Went to Oly, tried the E1, was able to use it in 5mins. In the end bought my 1st DSLR, Oly E1, due to other advantages that superseded the other brands & models.
Now i own an old 40D & a new 60D. Although some changes were made with the ergo & navi UI, but the commonly used features r still out there with dedicated buttons. ISO, Drive mode, Metering modes, Play, Erase, Zoom-in & zoom-out in playback, etc all have dedicated buttons (AF/MF on lens though, which also makes sense, why need a 2nd knob on the body too for the same purpose?). So not sure whats ur fuss is about? :dunno: Those not commonly used parameters r in the menus, which is pretty much the same as any other brands/models. (Eg, file size, art filters, dial direction, EV Steps, ISO boost, File numbering, Date/time, etc)
In summary, i re-emphasise, ergo is more of a personal inclination than anything else.
