I've made up my mind to buy from JB/ India once the D800E arrives.
Even after paying GST at the checkpoint, it's gonna be cheaper than the highway robbery that's being pulled here.

Look like Nikon marketing respond to Canon 5D Mark III successful launch here last week is a miscarriage, ouch!! :D :D

Actually, it would be better and less negative backslash, if Nikon hold back the launch until such time that they have adequate stock to meet atleast some demands instead of throwing out a few pieces and create frustration among users.

If I am Canon marketing, I will quickly ship in more inventory next week (beg, steal and borrow), this will soften the 5D3 price further among dealers and attract more frustrated defectors from Nikon camp, which will establish their hold on the market dominance once again for the next few years.

LOL if it's Apple products short of supply, ppl praise about it and worship it
In Nikon case, total failure.
Way to go people. Nikon has said that the demand for D800 is unprecedented, they didn't expect it to be this hot in the market.

While for canon, the tsunami affected them to a lesser extent, and AFAIK the thailand flood mostly damaged Canon's ink printer factory while Nikon mostly if not solely on its imaging productions. So yeah, Nikon aren't able to supply enough at the moment. But there's no need to put all the blame on Nikon. End of the day, they brought out a revolution DSLR that entices all of you to go and buy it in the first place. Without such a great camera, doubt there would be any supply issue.

Let's all just accept the fact that this is indeed a truly amazing camera, and great things come with a price, sometimes include waiting. If you want 5DM3 just go and get it. Cheers

China RSP is about SGD4,770
HK RSP is about SGD4,360
M'sia RSP is about SGD4472

All are pretty in line. It won't be identical for sure. ;) this is more than just exchange rate we're talking boys.

Ha ha you are right for D800. But the price for D4 in HK is about $1k less than in Singapore. Maybe not many people in China will buy D4 ba. So they don't have to adopt this pricing strategy?

I read this with interest as I have both systems. If I recall correctly, Canon used to announce their products way in advance and then customers have to wait for many months before they are available, while Nikon used to make the products available soon after product announcement. Now it seems to be the reverse for 5D3 and D800.

Also Canon used to up the megapixel war while Nikon stuck to the low end, and now it is reversed.

If I did not know better, I would say Nikon has poached the employees from Canon and vice versa!

Everyday I read this thread my hopes of getting a D800E seems to be fading...

Firstly, SG has 7% GST, the more expensive the goods, the more the difference because there's no duty charges for DSLR in HK
Second, as i mentioned, there's more than just converting exchange rate, there's other factors for the price differences like local market supply/demand, admin charges, transport charges etc.

Yes, probably you are right we should not be so hard on Nikon, those not happy just suck it up and go pick up 5DM3. I think Nikon probably never expect to sell more than 2-3 D800s per dealer on ship day, so this is really unprecedented. However for Apple, I don't think they are that short in supply, they really shipped a lot in thousands and in truck load and still not able to meet demand, so not a fair comparison.

I think it has nothing to do with the demand....

From what I hear, dealers are like getting 0-2 pieces each? What sort of demand are you talking about? The supply seems to be ridiculously low in Singapore. Coupled with the high RRP, you can't really blame people for getting irritated.

I mean if you don't have enough supply for singapore, I can understand as it might be difficult to get units. But when you couple it with a significantly more expensive pricing than your competitor, 5D3...

I just hope when the supply problem blows over, the final D800 street price vs 5D3 will reflect the US$500 difference.

nikon faithful users are paying more than canon's 5dmk3 which has a street price of around 4150sgd. considering the fact tat usa's 5dmk3 is 500usd more than D800...is absurd.

marketing strategy. i had a glance of another thread about the surprise street price vs rrp. makes sense to me.

FYI.. visited NSC today, they said that sample will be arriving tomorrow. can have a chance to give a try. :)

anyone remember what was the rrp for the D700 at launch? and what was the street price after a few weeks? I vaguely remember the street price to be around $3500?

Well, the same thing happens to M'sia dealer, heck ppl quoted me around SGD3800++, and mind you D800 RSP is even higher than in SG and M'sia has no duty on DSLR. So, go blame the dealers for taking advantage of crazy ppl here that are willing to pay.
Nikon has so lil stock worldwide because everywhere the demand is like crazy, we're not talking about cheap toy, it's a camera that cost 4k yet look at the demand around, B&H alone in US has pre-orders of about 8000. This is indeed crazy numbers we're seeing, the number of ppl wanting to get hold on one is huge therefore Nikon can only divide the limited supply there have to every market they could.

Demand & Supply...... little supply, huge demand... they sell carrot price...... in terms of $$$ for the company... good..... but in terms of relationship with customers...... fail.....

Cant blame them..... they either pleased the customer or make more $$$ and have huge bonus.... in this case, they choose the later.....

Just curious, how many people here need the D800 instead of wanting it?

Before on d700, how long did it took for the price to dropped down on the street price amount?

RRP is 3,888
Street price 3,500

Its all part of cooling measures.

Sorry, is there a difference?

I was wondering how many people urgently need the D800 soon (maybe there's a paid photoshoot soon and the customer needs 36MP) versus those who are still ok with what they have but are upgrading because they want the D800, not out of necessity.

Ai yah, nikon give you a good product at a price they think it is worth. It is then up to you decide if that product is worth that price that they are asking.

Eg. Chicken rice is priced from s$2.50 to s$25.0
I have tried both.

If I was shooting professionally and I would need a camera like the d800, I would buy one and bill the clients accordingly, especially if they want huge a1 sized prints.
