Are Bose speakers any good?

B&O have some VERY nice gear. I wouldn't mind some of that either.

My reason for drule is that KEF make some excellent transmission line speakers. NAD also make some very low THD amplifiers.

I have not needed to check out the latest gear for some time, so my thoughts are frome some time back.

As an example: Back when records were the go, I had a hole cut out of my floor
I had a pillar mounted in concrete in the ground that came up through the floor on which was my Transcriptor turntable.
This was to get around feed back via the floor!!!!

Oh well, it is good to see guys that have taste in their equipment buys.
Just hope that it is not for Doof Doof music :bsmilie: :bsmilie:

1) I listen much more to music. esp mp3, and some radio. hardly any CDs.(the CD player on my mini-compo has spoilt). SO i guess 2 channel is enough. most sound cards support at least 5.1 though

2) source is mp3. i dun do games

3) Erm...mostly thru speakers.

I duno what is SR-4300 now know how you integrate your NAD...

the SR 4300 is a HT amp ... NAD is for stereo 2 channel listening only.

For you i guess an entry level rotel or a 2nd hand NAD amp like the one laugh bought would be enough. Speakers wise, its entirely up to you. Few brands you can go for are KEF, Mission, Acoustic Energy to name a few. Go to Adelphi .. audition a few sets to see what your hearing tastes are.

Sometimes you just need to let your hair down and party ... and "doof doof" is all there is Not sure bout you guys, but i listen to a wide genre of music except chinese. So an all rounder is important to me.

I did go to adelphi, to accompany a friend on audio shopping. The issue is that they do not test mp3s, or have computers that link to amp to speakers etc. And the hi-fi shops are 'pro CDs'. Anything less, like mp3s or pirated CDs are not very 'welcomed'??

My other option is to get a better soundcard + 'digital speakers', like creative stuff?

you will want to audition using a very good source anyway. hence you should use good quality cd recordings.

As madmacs had mentioned before. They always play the highest quality stuff to show you the full potentional of the system.

Though i have a HT amp and an intergrated amp for my PC .. i still hook it up to my reference pre / power setup to check on quality and recordings.

Hooking up PCs to high quality reference $10K systems is a big no no :nono: and many audio fanatics frown upon that.

How better can a soundcard be? I've got a Live, Audigy and M-Audio Revolution. To me, M-Audio seems to be an all rounder. You might want to take a look at the Audiotrak Prodigy or the Creative EMU series of soundcard.

Finally, PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH CREATIVE SPEAKERS. I literally condemn them except for the M-85D which is out of production now sadly.

The best way is to hookup via coaxial or a very good interconnect to an integrated amp and have quality cablings to your speaker.

whether you like VdH depends on whether you like the sonic signature of their carbon cables. The First was not to my taste tho', did funny things to high frequency transients.

Hey, did you finally check out that Aego 2.1 which i recommended you? I am gonna get another set for HT in the room, actually its really 3.1 as i can plug in a center channel. I cannot put 2 rear speakers so this is really the best price/performance set i can ever get out there for budget HT.

If u're looking for multimedia speakers, thn go for AEGO 2 or Klipsch ProMedia series. They can be hooked up to ur comp, cd player, xbox. if u have a small room thn they act as mini HT liao. or get the Klipsch PM Ultra 5.1, Best across the board. Aego 5.1 is simply too expensive. one more point: stay away from Bose Companion 3 series... not worth ur penny.

If u want a HT, same... go for Acoustic Energy and Klipsch. LOL. Lifestyle is fine. No power but at least no distortion. however, for the price, u can scout for other brands that offer the same or better quality.

Alternatively, just buy average satts, flrstanders, subwoofers, any other speakers and tune it urself. change the cone, wires, tune the amp, ........ too many to list.

not yet, i want to upgrade my Altec Lansing ACS48, but still find myself heading towards the MX5021 because of the midrange drivers and the price is now $219. Will not be making a decision so soon because my monitor is breaking down and will need replacement. I will listen to the AEGO before making a final decision...

More impt how did you know what length to use? Did you buy unterminated lengths?

Did yr installer lay the cables properly ensuring they are seated properly and not pinched by anything?

Which vdH are you using? D102?

I'm not sure, its all done by the installers. Yup, they're unterminated and they're all seated nicely underneath the carpeting of the car.

As to which model, i'm not really sure. Installed them quite some time back already.

You can use home audio cables in car applications but be mindful as some of their insulations can't take the extreme heat of the car hence, they'll melt under extreme heat. I'm using monster interconnects all round. Hope this helps.

I see. Oh you're using speaker cables. I assumed it was interconnects as I usually associate vdH to interconnects instead of speaker cables.

Do you remember which car shop you went that has vdH cables or did you buy them from home audio shop? If so I have never seen other brands of cables other than the very common Monster Cable cables and intercons.

As an aside, this installer I went to plugged MTX intercons into my MTX amp and it made the whole system sound very nasal and shut-in. I went back to him and asked for Monster. The sound opened up. Never realised intercons would alter the sound so drastically, in car audio at least.

At home, I need golden ears to notice any difference, if at all.

I have saved some Rega Quattro speaker cable for my next upgrade

Usually audio cables for home and car more or less the same, won't get too hot lar, never heard of problems in the cabin. There are quite a number of VdH interconnects which are shielded, check out the website (but to what extent this works in the real life i am not sure). Just make sure the installation is done correctly, i believe that is more important than shielding in the car.

If you are interested in VdH speaker cables as well as interconnects, you can check out Kingsley in Adelphi, top floor near the escalators. Nice guy who can give you decent advice and good enough prices.

Who asked you to look towards the audigy 4 when you're not gaming much :bsmilie:

Get the EMU is enough when you just want 2 channel audio.

As for the connection wise, the soundcard's output depends on you're using digital inputs or just normal line level inputs.

Both have their pros and cons.

I'm using both.

Digital inputs is for multichannel since i watch DVDs on my Marantz

Analog inputs to my NAD as its only 2 channel.

There are basically 2 type so of amplication:
1. Integrated (where your input / amplification is all in 1 unit)

2. Pre / Power (where you have your line inputs / volume control are on a seperate unit) and the Power amp houses the amplifiers to drive your speakers. These 2 are seperated hence the name pre / power. Usually this combo provides best sound quality and imaging. compared to the integrated counterpart, but the integrated counterparts has their strengths and quality as well.

Not sure where my dad sent the car in. I was quite surprised they gave VDH cables in the package. My setup is more towards / dance pop music.

Have never touched MTX before, so i'm not sure how their interconnects sound. But i do love Rockford Fosgate / Pyle setups. Of course the amps must be of quality to drive the monsters

Cables for cars and home are the same... They always make the greatest difference.
